H(Tla) system: Identification of two new loci,H-31 andH-32, and alleles

Skin and tumor grafting experiments performed on F₁ hybrid mice indicate that theH(Tla) histocompatibility system is composed of at least two genetic loci,H(Tla-1) andH(Tla-2), and that one of these loci,H(Tla-1), has at least three alleles. We suggest thatH(Tla-1) andH(Tla-2) be renamedH-31 andH-32, respectively.

Development and rudimentation of the peripheral olfactory system in the harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena (Mammalia: Cetacea)

Serial sections of 13 embryos and fetuses of the harbor porpoise from 10 mm crown-rump length up to 167 mm total length were studied. Unlike the adult animals, ontogenetic stages of 18–27 mm crown-rump length still show a typical mammalian olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb primordium is penetrated by olfactory nerve fibers, the latter passing through the cribriform plate. However, the olfactory bulb anlage is gradually reduced in later stages, its placodal component being largely uncoupled from the telencephalon. As a ganglionlike structure, the remains of the placodal component stay in contact with the nasal septum and mucosa via thin bundles of nerve fibers. The ganglion and plexus can be traced within the meninges until the adult stage of the porpoise. There is strong evidence that they represent the material of the terminalis system, which cannot be distinguished from the olfactory system in earlier stages. A vomeronasal organ could not be detected in the embryonal and fetal material investigated.     

Filamentous bacterial viruses. XI. Molecular architecture of the class II (Pf1, Xf) virion

The diffraction patterns of the Pf 1 and Xf strains of filamentous bacterial viruses (class II) can be interpreted in terms of a simple helix of protein subunits with 15Åpitch, having 22 units in five turns. The protein subunits are each elongated in an axial direction, and also slope radially, so as to overlap each other, giving an arrangement of subunits reminiscent of scales on a fish. The protein helix forms a tube with inner diameter about 20Åand outer diameter about 60Å. The single-stranded circular DNA is contained within this tube, with two DNA strands running the length of the tube.The diffraction patterns of fd, If 1 and IKe (class I) can be interpreted in terms of a perturbed version of the class II simple helix.     

Electron-impact induced fragmentations and structures of benzeneboronates of acyclic tetraols

The isomeric 4,4′-bi-2-phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolanes and 2,7-diphenyl-1,3,6,8-tetraoxa-2,7-diborabicyclo[4.4.0]decanes have been distinguished by their electron-impact induced fragmentation. The bisbenzeneboronates of erythritol, L-threitol, 1-deoxy-D-arabinitol, 1-deoxy-D-lyxitol, 1-deoxy-D-ribitol, 1-deoxy-D-xylitol, 1,6-dideoxygalactitol, and 1,6-dideoxy-L-mannitol are likely to be mixtures of structural isomers.     

Life‐history constraints in grassland plant species: a growth‐defence trade‐off is the norm

Plant growth can be limited by resource acquisition and defence against consumers, leading to contrasting trade‐off possibilities. The competition‐defence hypothesis posits a trade‐off between competitive ability and defence against enemies (e.g. herbivores and pathogens). The growth‐defence hypothesis suggests that strong competitors for nutrients are also defended against enemies, at a cost to growth rate. We tested these hypotheses using observations of 706 plant populations of over 500 species before and following identical fertilisation and fencing treatments at 39 grassland sites worldwide. Strong positive covariance in species responses to both treatments provided support for a growth‐defence trade‐off: populations that increased with the removal of nutrient limitation (poor competitors) also increased following removal of consumers. This result held globally across 4 years within plant life‐history groups and within the majority of individual sites. Thus, a growth‐defence trade‐off appears to be the norm, and mechanisms maintaining grassland biodiversity may operate within this constraint.     

Extraction and fractionation of complex lipid mixtures with dense carbon dioxide on a micro scale

The effects of pressure, temperature and some organic solvents on the recovery of various lipid classes from plant and animal tissues can be assessed by fractional extraction with dense carbon dioxide and consecutive analysis by thin-layer chromatography.

Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Röntgenstrahleninaktivierung von Laktatdehydrogenase in Rattenleber und Invertase in Hefe untersucht. Die Inaktivierung war in den feuchten lebenden Zellen und in den getrockneten Zellen praktisch gleich, obwohl ein Beitrag der indirekten Strahlenwirkung in den feuchten Zellen zu erwarten war.Auszugsweise vorgetragen auf dem XI.
