Green microalgae can use naphthalenesulfonic acids as sources of sulfur

1-Naphthalenesulfonate (1-NS) was utilized by axenic cultures of Scenedesmus obliquus and by 5 other green microalgae as the sole source of sulfur. For all algae under study, 2-naphthalenesulfonate was definitely inferior to 1-NS as a source of sulfur. The rate of disapperance of 1-NS from the medium was measured by HPLC and, indirectly, by relating growth to sulfur supply. The physiological availability of 1-NS sulfur for Scenedesmus obliquus amounted to about 14% of sulfate sulfur. 1-Naphthol appeared as the major metabolite of 1-NS. Electron-impact induced fragmentations and structures of benzeneboronates of acyclic tetraols

The isomeric 4,4′-bi-2-phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolanes and 2,7-diphenyl-1,3,6,8-tetraoxa-2,7-diborabicyclo[4.4.0]decanes have been distinguished by their electron-impact induced fragmentation. The bisbenzeneboronates of erythritol, L-threitol, 1-deoxy-D-arabinitol, 1-deoxy-D-lyxitol, 1-deoxy-D-ribitol, 1-deoxy-D-xylitol, 1,6-dideoxygalactitol, and 1,6-dideoxy-L-mannitol are likely to be mixtures of structural isomers.     

Life‐history constraints in grassland plant species: a growth‐defence trade‐off is the norm

Plant growth can be limited by resource acquisition and defence against consumers, leading to contrasting trade‐off possibilities. The competition‐defence hypothesis posits a trade‐off between competitive ability and defence against enemies (e.g. herbivores and pathogens). The growth‐defence hypothesis suggests that strong competitors for nutrients are also defended against enemies, at a cost to growth rate. We tested these hypotheses using observations of 706 plant populations of over 500 species before and following identical fertilisation and fencing treatments at 39 grassland sites worldwide. Strong positive covariance in species responses to both treatments provided support for a growth‐defence trade‐off: populations that increased with the removal of nutrient limitation (poor competitors) also increased following removal of consumers. This result held globally across 4 years within plant life‐history groups and within the majority of individual sites. Thus, a growth‐defence trade‐off appears to be the norm, and mechanisms maintaining grassland biodiversity may operate within this constraint.     

Extraction and fractionation of complex lipid mixtures with dense carbon dioxide on a micro scale

The effects of pressure, temperature and some organic solvents on the recovery of various lipid classes from plant and animal tissues can be assessed by fractional extraction with dense carbon dioxide and consecutive analysis by thin-layer chromatography.     

Über die direkte und indirekte Strahlenwirkung auf Enzyme in der Zelle

Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Röntgenstrahleninaktivierung von Laktatdehydrogenase in Rattenleber und Invertase in Hefe untersucht. Die Inaktivierung war in den feuchten lebenden Zellen und in den getrockneten Zellen praktisch gleich, obwohl ein Beitrag der indirekten Strahlenwirkung in den feuchten Zellen zu erwarten war.Auszugsweise vorgetragen auf dem XI. Polaritätsstörungen bei Pflanzenzellen durch Äthylen

Zusammenfassung Durch Äthylen wird die radiale Polarität im Sproß vonVicia faba gestört. Es treten 2 Endodermen, eine davon zwischen den Gefäßbündeln und dem inneren Teil des Marks, auf. Auch ein zweites, Seitenwurzeln bildendes Perizykelgewebe entsteht. Die Kutinisierung der Membranen im Bereich der Endodermen kann infolge der gestörten radialen Polarität völlig diffus werden und sich sogar auf Markzellen ausdehnen. Die auch sonst allgemein mit Polaritätsverlust verbundene Embryonalisierung äußert sich in dichten Zellwucherungen im Mark.Mit 6 Textabbildungen.     

THE CYST-THECA RELATIONSHIP IN CALCIODINELLUM OPEROSUM EMEND. (PERIDINIALES, DINOPHYCEAE) AND A NEW APPROACH FOR THE STUDY OF CALCAREOUS CYSTS

The paratabulate calcareous cyst of Calciodinellum operosum Deflandre was recorded in a sediment trap sample collected in the Bay of Naples (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). The germination of this resting stage produced a phototrophic vegetative cell that had the typical plate pattern of a Scrippsiella species. The cyst morphotypes, observed in a clonal culture of this species, ranged from cysts with well-developed paratabulation to cysts in which the paratabulation was barely visible, to cysts covered by irregularly shaped crystals. The analysis of thin sections of the calcareous cysts using the polarized light microscope equipped with crossed nicols and a gypsum plate showed that the optical orientation of the calcite crystals was tangential in all the morphotypes examined. We suggest that the crystallographic method we describe might provide insights for calcareous cyst taxonomy and phylogeny .
