Herbivores and fungal pathogens are key drivers of plant community composition and functioning. The effects of herbivores and pathogens are mediated by the diversity and functional characteristics of their host plants. However, the combined effects of herbivory and pathogen damage, and their consequences for plant performance, have not yet been addressed in the context of biodiversity–ecosystem functioning research. We analyzed the relationships between herbivory, fungal pathogen damage and their effects on tree growth in a large‐scale forest‐biodiversity experiment. Moreover, we tested whether variation in leaf trait and climatic niche characteristics among tree species influenced these relationships. We found significant positive effects of herbivory on pathogen damage, and vice versa. These effects were attenuated by tree species richness—because herbivory increased and pathogen damage decreased with increasing richness—and were most pronounced for species with soft leaves and narrow climatic niches. However, herbivory and pathogens had contrasting, independent effects on tree growth, with pathogens decreasing and herbivory increasing growth. The positive herbivory effects indicate that trees might be able to (over‐)compensate for local damage at the level of the whole tree. Nevertheless, we found a dependence of these effects on richness, leaf traits and climatic niche characteristics of the tree species. This could mean that the ability for compensation is influenced by both biodiversity loss and tree species identity—including effects of larger‐scale climatic adaptations that have been rarely considered in this context. Our results suggest that herbivory and pathogens have additive but contrasting effects on tree growth. Considering effects of both herbivory and pathogens may thus help to better understand the net effects of damage on tree performance in communities differing in diversity. Moreover, our study shows how species richness and species characteristics (leaf traits and climatic niches) can modify tree growth responses to leaf damage under real‐world conditions. 相似文献

A mosaic genomic island comprising Shigella resistance locus (SRL) sequences flanked by segments of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strain EDL933 O islands 43, 81, and 82 was identified in sorbitol-fermenting (SF) enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H− strain 493/89. This mosaic island is absent from strain EDL933. PCR targeting the SRL-related sequence is a useful tool to distinguish SF EHEC O157:H− from EHEC O157:H7. 相似文献

During the last 20 years myxobacteria have made their way from highly exotic organisms to one of the major sources of microbial secondary metabolites besides actinomycetes and fungi. The pharmaceutical interest in these peculiar prokaryotes lies in their ability to produce a variety of structurally unique compounds and/or metabolites with rare biological activities. This review deals with the recent progress toward a better understanding of the biology, the genetics, the biochemistry and the regulation of secondary metabolite biosynthesis in myxobacteria. These research efforts paved the way to sophisticated in vitro studies and to the heterologous expression of complete biosynthetic pathways in conjunction with their targeted manipulation. The progress made is a prerequisite for using the vast resource of myxobacterial diversity regarding secondary metabolism more efficiently in the future. 相似文献

The catabolic and energy metabolism capacities during spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) embryogenesis were investigated. We assessed the embryo's ability to catabolize proteins (trypsin-like proteases) and lipids (triglyceride lipase) and examined the development of metabolic capacities using enzymatic assays: ability to use carbohydrates (pyruvate kinase), amino acids (aspartate aminotransferase) and fatty acids (hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase) for energy production, and aerobic (citrate synthase) and anaerobic (lactate dehydrogenase) energy production. Functional enzymatic systems were detected from the eyed stage (350 degree-days), except for fatty acids, which was detected from 540 degree-days. To compare the development of 1) aerobic and anaerobic pathways and 2) the capacity to mobilize the different energy substrates, enzymatic ratios were calculated. Anaerobic capacity appeared to increase at a significantly higher rate than the aerobic capacity. Ratios revealing the relative capacity to use specific energy substrates showed a significantly slower increase during development in the capacity to use carbohydrates than amino acids and fatty acids. The end of embryogenesis was characterized by a significant decrease in the use of carbohydrates for aerobic energy production but an increasing capacity to use amino acids. Egg survival as affected by the variability in metabolic parameters is discussed. 相似文献

We studied the learning capacities and anticipatory behaviour in a “sit-and-wait” predatory fish, the Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus. In Experiment 1 two groups of halibut received series of light flashes (conditioned stimulus, CS) that started before delivery of food (unconditioned stimulus, US) and persisted until after food delivery, i.e. delay conditioning. Control groups received unpaired CS and US presentations. The anticipatory behaviour of delay conditioned halibut consisted mainly of take-offs towards the surface shortly after onset of the CS. In Experiment 2 six groups of halibut were trained in three trace conditioning procedures: Two groups with 20 s, two groups with 60 s and two groups with 120 s trace interval. Learning was evident in the 20 and 60 s trace groups and in one of the 120 s trace groups. In contrast to delay conditioning the anticipatory behaviour of trace conditioned halibut was characterized by subtle movements near the tank floor with orientation towards the CS. The cautious responses of halibut after trace conditioning differed markedly from what is observed in other fish species and are suggested to reflect a “sit-and-wait” foraging strategy that requires the predator to remain undetected until the prey is within lunging range. 相似文献

In the last decades, natural products from lichens have gained more interest for pharmaceutical application due to the broad range of their biological activity. However, isolation of the compounds of interest directly from the lichen is neither feasible nor sustainable due to slow growth of many lichens. In order to develop a pipeline for heterologous expression of lichen biosynthesis gene clusters and thus the sustainable production of their bioactive compounds we have identified and characterized the phosphopantheteinyl transferase (PPTase) EppA from the lichen Evernia prunastri. The Sfp-type PPTase EppA was functionally characterized through heterologous expression in E. coli using the production of the blue pigment indigoidine as readout and by complementation of a lys5 deletion in S. cerevisiae. 相似文献

The human endolymphatic duct (ED) and sac of the inner ear have been suggested to control endolymph volume and pressure. However, the physiological mechanisms for these processes remain obscure. We investigated the organization of the periductal interstitial connective tissue cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) in four freshly fixed human EDs by transmission electron microscopy and by immunohistochemistry. The unique surgical material allowed a greatly improved structural and epitopic preservation of tissue. Periductal connective tissue cells formed frequent intercellular contacts and focally occurring electron-dense contacts to ECM structures, creating a complex tissue network. The connective tissue cells also formed contacts with the basal lamina of the ED epithelium and the bone matrix, connecting the ED with the surrounding bone of the vestibular aqueduct. The interstitial connective tissue cells were non-endothelial and non-smooth muscle fibroblastoid cells. We suggest that the ED tissue network forms a functional mechanical entity that takes part in the control of inner ear fluid pressure and endolymph resorption. 相似文献
