Tympanal hearing organs of insects emit distortion–product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), which in mammals are used as indicator for nonlinear cochlear amplification, and which are highly vulnerable to manipulations interfering with the animal’s physiological state. Although in previous studies, evidence was provided for the involvement of auditory mechanoreceptors, the source of DPOAE generation and possible active mechanisms in tympanal organs remained unknown. Using laser Doppler vibrometry in the locust ear, we show that DPOAEs mechanically emerge at the tympanum region where the auditory mechanoreceptors are attached. Those emission-coupled vibrations differed remarkably from tympanum waves evoked by external pure tones of the same frequency, in terms of wave propagation, energy distribution, and location of amplitude maxima. Selective inactivation of the auditory receptor cells by mechanical lesions did not affect the tympanum’s response to external pure tones, but abolished the emission’s displacement amplitude peak. These findings provide evidence that tympanal auditory receptors, comparable to the situation in mammals, comprise the required nonlinear response characteristics, which during two-tone stimulation lead to additional, highly localized deflections of the tympanum.  相似文献

A basic ecological and epidemiological question is why some women enter into commercial sex work while other women in the same socio-economic environment never do. To address this question respondent driven sampling principles were adopted to recruit and collect data for 161 female sex workers and 159 same aged women who never engaged in commercial sex in Kibera, a large informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. Univariate analysis indicated that basic kinship measures, including number of family members seen during adolescence and at present, not having a male guardian while growing up, and earlier times of ending relationships with both male and female guardians were associated with commercial sex work in Kibera. Multivariate analysis via logistic regression modeling showed that not having a male guardian during childhood, low education attainment and a small number of family members seen at adolescence were all significant predictors of entering sex work. By far the most important predictor of entering sex work was not having any male guardian, e.g., father, uncle, older brother, etc. during childhood. Results are interpreted in light of the historic pattern of sub-Saharan African child fostering and their relevance for young women in Kibera today.  相似文献

Small enkephalin-related peptides containing a 1-adamantanamine moiety coupled through an amide linkage at the C-terminus were synthesized. Several of the compounds showed high μ opioid activity and μ receptor selectivity. The new adamantanamine derivatives were also examined for antiviral activity against HIV-1 in a cell culture system. Some of them inhibited syncytia formation even when the antigen assay gave evidence for viral replication.  相似文献

Enkephalin (ENK) immunoreactivity was localised in different neuronal subpopulations of the myenteric plexus in the guinea-pig gastric fundus using immunohistochemistry for neurone-specific enolase (NSE), ENK, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), substance P (SP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), calretinin (CALRET), and somatostatin (SOM). NADPH-diaphorase staining was used to label nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing neurones. ENK was observed in 44% of the myenteric neurones. The major ENK-positive subpopulations were ChAT/ENK (35% of ENK-positive neurones), ChAT/SP/ENK (26%), NOS/NPY/ENK (22%) and ChAT/SP/ENK/CALRET (9%). The projection pathways of these ENK-positive subpopulations to the circular muscle and the mucosa were determined using retrograde labelling with DiI in organ culture followed by immunohistochemistry. Of myenteric neurones retrogradely labelled from the mucosa and the circular muscle, 13% and 48% exhibited ENK immunoreactivity, respectively. Three major ENK-positive subpopulations innervating the mucosa or circular muscle were identified: ascending ChAT/SP/ENK (7% of all mucosa neurones; 24% of all circular muscle neurones), ascending ChAT/ENK (4%; 15%) and descending NOS/NPY/ENK (1%; 8%) neurones. Only very few CALRET- or SOM-positive neurones projected to the mucosa or circular muscle. ChAT/SP/ENK and ChAT/ENK neurones might function as ascending excitatory muscle motor neurones, whereas NOS/NPY/ENK neurones are most likely descending inhibitory muscle motor neurones. The relatively few ENK-positive mucosa neurones do not favour a major involvement of ENK-positive myenteric neurones in the control of gastric mucosa activity.  相似文献

Symbiotic interactions between peas and Rhizobium leguminosarum were investigated by inoculating four pea lines, three of which are strain-specific resistant to the European strain 311d, with various combinations of two strains of Rhizobium, 311d and Tom++. The strains were almost equally good to infect the susceptible European cultivar Hero when added singly inoculated. After mixed inoculation (1:1 proportion) strain analysis by ELISA revealed that the nodules were preferentially formed by 311d, although some Tom++ nodules were also found mainly on the upper part of the root. Our conclusion is that Tom++ is less compatible in comparison with 311d. In addition, we found that as the Hero plants emerged, they were becoming more resistant towards infection with not adapted bacteria. The strain-specific resistant lines from Afghanistan belong to two different systems: Afgh. I, completely resistant to 311d and highly nodulating with Tom++, and Afgh. III, incompletely resistant to 311d and poorly nodulating with Tom++. Mixed inoculations resulted in nodule depressions, as compared to single inoculations with Tom++ ranging from 87% to 14%. The ability of 311d to block infection sites on the roots were found to depend on the degree of symbiotic adaptation between Afgh. I and Tom++, respectively Afgh. III and Tom++. Strain analysis after double strain inoculation of Afgh. I plants revealed that some nodules were induced by strain 311d. Thus, the presence of Tom++ in this case influences the degree of host resistance. However, in Afgh. III plants the resistance towards nodulation were unaffected by the presence of Tom++. We suggest that the degree of symbiotic adaptation may change the barrier of resistance towards infection.  相似文献

When 50 S subunits from Escherichia coli are incubated in the presence of 4.3 m-LiCl, the resulting 4.3c core particle quantitatively lacks L20 in addition to other proteins. The 4.3c core can be reconstituted to an active 50 S subunit in the presence of total 50 S proteins by means of the second step incubation of the two-step reconstitution procedure. This finding indicates that the conformation of the 4.3c core is at least equivalent to the conformation of the reconstitution intermediate RI501(1) particle, which is exclusively formed in the first-step incubation. It follows that L20 is not necessary for the maintenance of the 4.3c core conformation. In contrast, the total reconstitution of an active 50 S particle from (23 S + 5 S) RNA and a protein preparation lacking L20 was fully dependent on the addition of L20. However, when the 4.3c core, which does not contain L20, is reconstituted with the same protein fraction, the activity of the resulting particle did not depend on the presence of L20. Thus, L20 is essential for the early assembly (occurring in the first-step incubation) but plays no role either in the late assembly steps, or the functions of the mature 50 S particle.Heat treatment of the 4.3c core distorts the 4.3c core conformation and leads to particles with lower s values. The degradation of the 4.3c core conformation is reduced when L20 is added. A further stabilization is obtained by the addition of (L20 + L24). Thus, L20 is dispensable for the maintenance of the 4.3c core conformation, but stabilizes this conformation.  相似文献
