1. Genetic colony structure of the small central European ant Leptothorax nylanderi is affected strongly by ecological constraints such as nest site availability and intraspecific social parasitism. 2. Although L. nylanderi is generally monogynous and monandrous, more than a quarter of all nests collected in a dense population near Würzburg, Germany, contained several matrilines. As shown by microsatellite analysis, the average nest‐mate relatedness in these nests was 0.20. Genetically heterogeneous nests arise from nest take‐over by alien colonies or founding queens, a result of severe competition for nest sites. 3. In summer, more than one‐third of all colonies inhabited several nest sites at a time. Polydomy appears to be rather limited, with two or three nests belonging to a single polydomous colony. 4. Queens appear to dominate male production; only a small fraction (8%) of males was definitively not progeny of the queen present but might have been worker progeny or offspring of another queen. 5. Strong evidence for heterozygote deficiency was found and a total of nine diploid males was discovered in two colonies. Colonies of the ant, Leptothorax (s. str.) gredleri may contain several inseminated female reproductives of which typically only one is laying eggs. Observations suggest that “functional monogyny” is caused by aggressive interactions among nestmate queens. Only the most dominant queen reproduces. Subordinate queens either leave the colony to found their own nests solitarily or by budding, or stay in the nest without reproducing, but may eventually replace the dominant queen. Partial purine deprivation causes sporulation of Bacillus subtilis in the presence of excess ammonia, glucose and phosphate. 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
In strains of Bacillus subtilis able to synthesize purines de novo, massive sporulation is suppressed by the combination of excess ammonia, glucose and phosphate. Purine auxotrophs, blocked in the general or the guanine-specific portion of the branched purine pathway, sporulated in such a medium when the purine required for normal growth was removed from the medium. The resulting spore titre and the sporulation frequency increased with the residual growth rate in the purine-free medium, i.e. with the leakiness of the purine mutation. Sporulation was further increased by allowing residual growth in growth-limiting amounts of guanosine. None-leaky purine mutants blocked before 5'-phosphoribosyl-5-amino-4-imidazole carboxamide also sporulated well when supplied with 5-amino-4-imidazole carboxamide at concentrations (2 mM) that supported growth at a suboptimal rate. 相似文献

Excess secretion of growth hormone is a rare diagnosis in children or adolescents with tall stature. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGT) with determination of growth hormone is generally recommended to exclude this disorder. In order to test the validity of this approach in pediatric subjects, OGT tests were performed in 126 tall subjects (age: 12.4 +/- 1.8 years; height: 3.1 +/- 0.8 SDS). Nonsuppression was present in 39 subjects, however, anthropometric analysis and follow-up excluded the diagnosis of eosinophilic pituitary adenoma in all patients. The lowest GH concentration was reached 90 min after ingestion of oral glucose, GH rose above baseline at 180 min. Plasma concentrations of glucose and insulin did not differ between suppressors and nonsuppressors. In conclusion, absent suppression of growth hormone by oral glucose is common in tall children and adolescents. The test is therefore not recommended as a general screening for excess growth hormone. Prolonging the test beyond 120 min does not increase the diagnostic value. 相似文献

The functional role of the alpha-rhythm which dominates the human electroencephalogram (EEG) is unclear. It has been related to visual processing, attentional selection and object coherence, respectively. Here we tested the interaction of alpha oscillations of the human brain with visual search tasks that differed in their attentional demands (pre-attentive vs. attentive) and also in the necessity to establish object coherence (conjunction vs. single feature). Between pre- and post-assessment elderly subjects received 20 min/d of repetitive transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) over the occipital cortex adjusted to their individual alpha frequency over five consecutive days. Compared to sham the entrained alpha oscillations led to a selective, set size independent improvement in the conjunction search task performance but not in the easy or in the hard feature search task. These findings suggest that cortical alpha oscillations play a specific role in establishing object coherence through suppression of distracting objects. 相似文献

Sex appears to be a rather prosaic and casual event in the life of most social Hymenoptera. In contrast, mating in the ant
genus Cardiocondyla is regularly preceded by a prolonged and stereotypic courtship display. Pummeling the head of the female with mandibles and
/ or antennae and vibrations of the gaster, presumably stridulation, are essential parts of male courtship. The overall structure
of the mating pattern is conserved throughout species and between winged and wingless, “ergatoid” males, but exhibits species-specific
idiosyncrasies. For example, C. elegans males regularly end the interaction with a female with a short mouth-to-mouth contact. Variation in the duration of the precopulatory
phase and the copulation itself might reflect different degrees of inter- and intrasexual selection. More information on the
dynamics of sperm transfer and the risk and intensity of sperm competition are needed to better understand the evolution of
the complex mating behavior in this genus.

Using optimized computer models of arterial trees we demonstrate that flow heterogeneity is a necessary consequence of a uniform shear stress distribution. Model trees are generated and optimized under different modes of boundary conditions. In one mode flow is delivered to the tissue as homogeneously as possible. Although this primary goal can be achieved, resulting shear stresses between blood and the vessel walls show very large spread. In a second mode, models are optimized under the condition of uniform shear stress in all segments which in turn renders flow distribution heterogeneous. Both homogeneous perfusion and uniform shear stress are desirable goals in real arterial trees but each of these goals can only be approached at the expense of the other. While the present paper refers only to optimized models, we assume that this dual relation between the heterogeneities in flow and shear stress may represent a more general principle of vascular systems. 相似文献
