Background
In view of the reduced number of hours devoted to sleep in modern western societies the question arises what effects might result from sleep duration on occurrence of chronic diseases.Methods
Data from 23 620 middle-aged participants of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Potsdam study, that were recruited between 1994–1998, were analyzed by using Cox proportional hazard regression to examine the association between self-reported sleep duration at baseline and incidence of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, myocardial infarction, stroke, and cancer.Results
During a mean follow-up period of 7.8 years 841 incident cases of type 2 diabetes, 197 cases of myocardial infarction, 169 incident strokes, and 846 tumor cases were observed. Compared to persons sleeping 7-<8 h/day, participants with sleep duration of <6 h had a significantly increased risk of stroke (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 2.06, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.18–3.59), cancer (HR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.09–1.87), and overall chronic diseases (HR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.10–1.55) in multivariable adjusted models. Self-reported daytime sleep at baseline was not associated with incident chronic diseases in the overall study sample. However, there had been an effect modification of daytime sleep by hypertension showing that daytime sleep was inversely related to chronic disease risk among non-hypertensive participants but directly related to chronic diseases among hypertensives.Conclusion
Sleep duration of less than 6 h is a risky behavior for the development of chronic diseases, particularly stroke and cancer, and should be therefore addressed in public health campaigns. 相似文献573.

Background
Signal transduction pathways are usually modelled using classical quantitative methods, which are based on ordinary differential equations (ODEs). However, some difficulties are inherent in this approach. On the one hand, the kinetic parameters involved are often unknown and have to be estimated. With increasing size and complexity of signal transduction pathways, the estimation of missing kinetic data is not possible. On the other hand, ODEs based models do not support any explicit insights into possible (signal-) flows within the network. Moreover, a huge amount of qualitative data is available due to high-throughput techniques. In order to get information on the systems behaviour, qualitative analysis techniques have been developed. Applications of the known qualitative analysis methods concern mainly metabolic networks. Petri net theory provides a variety of established analysis techniques, which are also applicable to signal transduction models. Background
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 3-10%. in European studies. However, the diagnosis of RLS in primary care remains low and mistreatment is common.Methods
The current article reports on the considerations of RLS diagnosis and management that were made during a European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (EURLSSG)-sponsored task force consisting of experts and primary care practioners. The task force sought to develop a better understanding of barriers to diagnosis in primary care practice and overcome these barriers with diagnostic and treatment algorithms.Results
The barriers to diagnosis identified by the task force include the presentation of symptoms, the language used to describe them, the actual term "restless legs syndrome" and difficulties in the differential diagnosis of RLS.Conclusion

The spermiogenesis consisting of five spermatid stages and the early spermatozoon has been investigated in Armorloricus elegans (Loricifera) with the use of transmission electron microscopy. The male reproductive system consists of three parts; testes,
vasa deferentia and seminal vesicles. Caudally, the two seminal vesicles merge together in a ciliated duct and the excretory/gonadal—and
digestive systems continue through the recto-urogenital canal, which opens via the lateral gonopores and the temporarily closed
anal system. Spermiogenesis mainly occurs in the testes, whereas further maturation of the late spermatids and early spermatozoa
occurs in the vasa deferentia and seminal vesicles. A maturation gradient (from spermatocytes to spermatozoa) is found from
the posterior peripheral part of the testes to the anterior periphery and then centrally. During spermiogenesis the round
nucleus becomes more osmiophilic and condensation of chromatin occurs. Later the nucleus elongates until it becomes rod-shaped
in the early spermatozoa. In the second spermatid stage, a large vesicle is formed by saccules developed from the Golgi complex.
This vesicle develops further and consists of three different osmiophilic parts with some crystal-like structures inside and
is on the outside almost entirely surrounded by thick striated filaments. In the mid-piece the flagellum has a typical 9 × 2 + 2
axoneme and the two mitochondria are fused into a single sheet surrounding the flagellum. In the early spermatozoon stage
an acrosomal-like cap structure with an acrosome filament appears proximal to the protruded rod-shaped nucleus. This cap is
not formed by the Golgi complex and therefore might not be a true acrosome. Comparing the early spermatozoa of A. elegans with other cycloneuralians has shown some similarities with especially Kinorhyncha and Priapulida. These similarities are

CM3, a highly cross-linked cellulose in capsule form, expands in the stomach to a size several fold of its original volume. It is purported to induce a prolonged feeling of satiation and a delay in gastric emptying, thus promoting weight loss. We examined whether CM3 delays gastric emptying (using the stable isotope (13)C-octanoic breath test) and whether it influences subjective feelings of appetite sensations (using visual analog scales, VASs). We performed a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial in 19 moderately obese but otherwise healthy subjects (mean age 55 +/- 9 years, BMI 31.1 +/- 4.6 kg/m(2)). The subjects were treated with six capsules of CM3 or matching placebo 30 min before a standardized solid meal. Breath collection and VASs were performed over 4 h every 15 min and 30 min, respectively. Half-excretion time of (13)CO(2) in breath, indicating gastric emptying half time, was the primary outcome parameter. The study was powered to detect a change in gastric emptying of 20-30 min. Mean (13)CO(2) half-excretion time changed from 2.3 +/- 0.4 to 2.4 +/- 0.33 h (mean difference +6 min, 95% confidence interval (CI) -3 to +15 min; P = 0.17). Appetite sensations (hunger, satiation, fullness, prospective food consumption, desire to eat something sweet, salty, savory, or fatty) changed over time during the course of the postprandial phase but were not influenced by CM3 (repeated measures ANOVA).
