Subcutaneous transplantation between 5-day-old littermates of non-inbred rats was used to study the regeneration following partial or total removal of the proximal epiphyseal cartilage of the humerus. More than 200 transplants were followed for periods ranging from 2 to 60 days. No regeneration occurred after a complete epiphysectomy, while a partial regeneration took place in many of the partially epiphysectomized transplants, insofar as the growth plate appeared to be functional for a period of time, but no epiphysis developed. Observations on the early activity of the periosteum and on the fate of the articular cartilage of the transplants were made and compared to findings reported in the literature. The absence of regeneration found in the present study was comparable to that found in earlier studies on the mandibular condyle.  相似文献

The biocontrol agent Phlebiopsis gigantea has been intensively applied to the surface of Picea abies stumps to control Heterobasidion root rot. But little is known about the possible impact of this treatment on the resident bacteria community in the stumps. High throughput DNA bar-coded pyrosequencing was used to characterize the diversity of bacteria in the stumps of P. abies at 1, 6 and 13 years after treatment with P. gigantea. The sequences were classified into 12 phyla and 160 genera, of which Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the most abundant groups over time. Moreover, at the initial stages of decay, Proteobacteria were the most abundant whereas Acidobacteria were the most common at advanced stages of decay. Treatment with P. gigantea led to significant increase of the genus Acidobacteria-Gp1 at 1 year after treatment. The analysis of observed and estimated operational taxonomic units (OTUs) as well as diversity indices revealed that P. gigantea treatment significantly decreased the initial bacterial richness in the stumps, but the bacterial community gradually recovered and the negative effects of P. gigantea was attenuated. These results provide additional insight on the risk assessment as well as environmental impact on the long-term use of P. gigantea in the control of Heterobasidion root rot in conifer forests.  相似文献

Summary Microtine rodents are known to show extreme population variations (cycles) but non-cyclic populations have also been recognized during recent years. The cyclic populations have been widely thought to be regulated by intrinsic mechanisms. However, such predictions for cyclic populations are usually not applicable to non-cyclic ones and extrinsic factors may have to be included in any explanation.A hypothesis that the degree of fluctuations in small rodent numbers is related to the sustainable number of generalist predators was tested on mainly literature data by computing indices of cyclicity for local populations. These indices were related to latitude and snow cover (two measures) as these variables will affect the amount of alternative prey available for these generalists. Within Fennoscandia such indices for Clethrionomys glareolus and Microtus agrestis were clearly positively related to latitude and snow cover. The fraction of populations with summer declines in numbers, characterizing highly cyclic populations, increased in the same way. Cyclicity indices in Great Britain were similar to those in southern Fennoscandia, both areas being poor in snow, but were higher at the same latitudes in eastern Europe with more snow. Indices of density variations were generally low in North American Clethrionomys species and very variable in Microtus species.The gradients observed and differences between continents are interpreted as due to microtine-vegetation interactions in northern European areas poor in generalist predators but with important small mustelid predation, and to similar snowshoe hare-vegetation interactions in mainly Canada-Alaska, where small rodents may serve as alternative prey for numerically fluctuating hare predators, at least in the forests. Western European microtine populations, and probably many others, seem to be regulated by generalist predators.  相似文献

The edible grasshopper Ruspolia differens (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) gathered seasonally from the wild is a highly valued and an economically important edible insect, particularly in East Africa. To reduce the pressure on wild populations, a sustainable mass production technique needs to be developed. Unfortunately, however, basic biological know-how on feeding habits of R. differens is poorly understood, which poses a constraint on the development of mass-rearing technology. Here, we evaluated the acceptance and feeding preference of R. differens for 16 cultivated or processed foods using no-choice and multiple-choice laboratory bioassays. The results indicated that adult R. differens can eat a wide variety of foods but does not necessarily accept all the foods equally. Furthermore, our experiments showed that R. differens has high ability to select diet among those available. The order of decreasing preference was wheat bran > germinated finger millet > rice seed head > finger millet seed head > chicken feed egg booster > sorghum seed head. Finally, our study indicated that sex and color morph are not associated with the order of acceptance and preference of diets in R. differens. These results show potential foods that could be utilized for developing future mass-rearing methods for R. differens.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We aimed to study whether permanent night workers sleep and psychosocial factors differ from day workers and shift workers. The participants (n = 9 312, 92% females, average age 45 years, most commonly nurses and departmental secretaries) were day workers (DW, n = 2 672), shift workers (SW, n = 6 486) and permanent night workers (PNW, n = 154). The Finnish Public Sector survey responses from six hospital districts from 2012 were combined to payroll data from 91 days preceding the survey. The data were analyzed using Pearson χ2-test, one-way ANOVA and multinomial logistic regression analysis. The PNWs reported slightly longer average sleep length than the SWs or the DWs (7:27 vs. 7:13 and 7:10 h, p < 0.001). The PNWs reported least often difficulties in maintaining sleep (p < 0.001) compared to the SWs and the DWs. The PNWs reported most often difficulties to fall asleep and fatigue during free-time (p-values <0.001). The DWs and PNWs experienced less often work-life conflict than the SWs (25 and 26 vs. 38%, p < 0.001). The PNWs were more often satisfied with autonomy at work and appreciation and fair treatment by colleagues than the DWs or the SWs (p < 0.001). The SWs and PNWs reported remarkably higher occurrence of verbal (p < 0.001, OR 3.71, 95% CI 3.23–4.27 and OR 7.67, 95% CI 5.35–10.99, respectively) and physical workplace violence (p < 0.001, OR 9.24, 95% CI 7.17–11.90 and OR 28.34, 95% CI 16.64–43.06, respectively) compared to DWs. Conclusively, PNWs reported contradictory differences in sleep quality compared to DWs and SWs. PNWs are more often satisfied with their colleagues and autonomy at work than DWs or SWs but face workplace violence remarkably more often.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of embryos and their recovery rate from mares inseminated at different intervals after ovulation. Finnhorse and warmblood mares were inseminated with fresh semen 8 to 16 h, 16 to 24 h, or 24 to 32 h after ovulation. Control mares were inseminated before ovulation. Sixty-seven embryo flushings were performed between Days 7 and 9 after ovulation/insemination. Thirteen mares were not flushed, but their uteri were scanned for pregnancy on Days 14 to 16. Embryo recovery rates decreased as time from ovulation to insemination increased, although embryo quality remained normal as evaluated by morphological criteria and mitotic index. However, postovulatory insemination in this trial appeared to delay embryo development, since the embryos recovered from mares inseminated after ovulation were appreciably smaller and at an earlier stage of development than control embryos recovered from mares inseminated prior to ovulation. Part of this delay in embryo development in the postovulation group could be due to the time needed for sperm capacitation. In addition, as the time from ovulation to insemination increased, embryo development might have been further delayed by defects in the aging oocyte.  相似文献

Infantile-onset spinocerebellar ataxia (IOSCA) is an autosomal recessively inherited progressive neurological disorder of unknown etiology. This ataxia, identified so far only in the genetically isolated Finnish population, does not share gene locus with any of the previously identified hereditary ataxias, and a random mapping approach was adopted to assign the IOSCA locus. Based on the assumption of one founder mutation, a primary screening of the genome was performed using samples from just four affected individuals in two consanguineous pedigrees. The identification of a shared chromosomal region in these four patients provided the first evidence that the IOSCA gene locus is on chromosome 10q23.3-q24.1, which was confirmed by conventional linkage analysis in the complete family material. Strong linkage disequilibrium observed between IOSCA and the linked markers was utilized to define accurately the critical chromosomal region. The results showed the power of linkage disequilibrium in the locus assignment of diseases with very limited family materials.  相似文献

The long QT syndrome is an autosomally dominantly inherited cardiac disorder characterized by abnormalities of myocardial repolarization, exercise- or stress-related syncopal attacks and risk of sudden death due to cardiac arrhythmias. Genetic linkage studies have defined three LQT loci on chromosomes 11p15.5, 3q21–24 and 7p35–36. We performed linkage analyses in three Finnish LQT families using five amplifiable markers assigned to chromosome 11p15. By multipoint linkage analyses we obtained a maximal lod score of 5.503, suggesting that the LQT1 locus maps between D11S922 and D11S1338 on chromosome 11. Our data provide a step towards closer definition of the exact borderlines of the LQT1 locus in chromosome 11 and demonstrate markers with high utility in identification of gene carriers in the affected families.  相似文献

The development of frost hardiness in forest trees is describedby a dynamic model in which the input variables are the prevailingenvironmental conditions and the developmental stage of trees.The assumption of the model is that for each temperature andphotoperiod there is a discrete stationary level of frost hardiness,which is attained if these environmental factors remain constant.The dependence of the stationary level on temperature and photoperiodis assumed to be piece-wise linear and additive. The rate ofacclimation, i.e. frost hardening or dehardening, is describedas a second-order dynamic process with two time constants, thesecond of which changes depending on the stage of the annualdevelopment of the trees. The frost hardiness model was calibratedand tested using experimental data from Douglas fir [Pseudotsugamenziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco] seedlings.
