Afforestation is a recommended practice to mitigate global warming. However, their implementation may generate undesirable impacts, mostly if exotic species are used. Plantations of Pinus radiata D Don in Ventania (Bs. As., Argentina) soils showed notorious increments of extractable P (Pe), which could affect the dynamic of this element as well as the degree of phosphorus saturation (GSPBray). The objectives of this study were: i) to quantify the GSPBray in Mollisols afforested with P. radiata comparing the results with those coming from adjacent, natural grassland areas (base line); ii) to evaluate the potential environmental risk induced by afforestation through the identification of a change point (PC) in the GSPBray indicative of a phosphate leaching increment. Treatments included mature stands of P. radiata (TB) and adjacent areas with natural grassland vegetation (TP). Samples were taken at 0-15; 15-30 and 30-45 cm soil depth, and texture, pH, total organic carbon (COT), Pe, soluble reactive phosphorus (PSR), phosphorus sorption index (ISP) and GSPBray were determined. The results showed a significant acidification in TB and an increase in the COT stock, indicating an additional atmospheric CO2 sequestration by the trees. The Pe and PSR values were notoriously higher in TB, and they were reflected in a significant increment in the GSPBray with respect to TP. The detection of a significant PC in the GSPBray-PSR regression indicates higher chances of phosphate leaching in the forest stands, which could reach water courses, lakes and artificial reservoirs promoting their eutrophication. Because of the potential environmental pollution risk of biologic origin derived from the afforestation with P. radiata in Mollisols areas, their inclusion in clean development practices must be reconsidered.  相似文献

Response of a Sphagnum bog plant community to elevated CO2 and N supply   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The factors determining herbaceous canopy architecture are poorlyunderstood, especially in natural and semi-natural plant communities. Inthis study, we tested three main hypotheses: (1) the structure of herbaceouscanopies can be explained by the vertical distribution of functional groupsdefined by leaf width and the presence/absence of leaves on upright stem;(2) the degree of canopy stratification is greater in habitats that experiencelower spatial heterogeneity in the supply of light (i.e., grasslands as opposedto forest herb layers); and (3) there is significant variation among specieswithin a growth-form, with respect to their vertical position in thecanopy. We used plant foliage height distribution data from 14 grassland and 13forest herbaceous communities to test these hypotheses. A general linear mixedmodel was applied to specify the proportions of total variance in the foliageheight, accounted for by the fixed effects of plants' basicgrowth-form properties (growth-form) and community type(forest/grassland), and by the random effects of sampling site, samplingpoint, and individual species. We were also interested in the correlation ofthedegree of the stratification with various community characteristics(productivity, other canopy properties, species richness, variation ofspecies' traits) and light availability. There was some evidence ofoverall canopy stratification according toplant growth-form, since plants with leafy stem were locatedsignificantly higher. However, such a pattern of two more or less distinctlayers (grasses + upright forbs and rosette forbs) occurred withconsistency only in grasslands (greater homogeneity in light). Thebetween-species variation within a growth-form was a highlysignificant predictor of canopy vertical structure in the 27 communities. Theproportion of total observed variance, explainable throughspecies-specific effects, was comparable to that caused bybetween-site differences. The effect of community horizontal pattern wasless obvious, but still significant. The site by site analysis revealed thatthe degree to which horizontalpatchiness explained variation in vertical canopy structure was negativelyrelated to the relative importance of species-specific effects, showingthat small between-species differences lead to a more obviouswithin-community horizontal pattern, and vice versa. The upper bound ofthe degree of foliage stratification, according to growth-form, wasrelated to the variability of species light requirements and to relative (tocommunity pool size) richness, indicating that certain aspects of canopyarchitecture might be explained through community species composition anddiversity pattern.  相似文献

Despite their low primary production, ombrotrophic peatlands have a considerable potential to store atmospheric carbon as a result of their extremely low litter decomposition rates. Projected changes in temperature and nitrogen (N) deposition may increase decomposition rates by their positive effects on microbial activity and litter quality, which can be expected to result in enhanced mass loss and N release from Sphagnum and vascular plant litter. This is the first study that examines the combined effects of increased temperature and N deposition on decomposition in bogs. We investigated mass loss and N release at four bog sites along a gradient from north Sweden to northeast Germany in which both temperature and N deposition increased from north to south. We performed two litterbag experiments: one reciprocal experiment with Eriophorum vaginatum litter and one experiment using recalcitrant (Sphagnum fuscum) and more degradable (Sphagnum balticum) Sphagnum litter collected from the most northern site. We measured mass loss and N release during two (Sphagnum) and three (E. vaginatum) years. The N concentration and decomposability of the E. vaginatum litter did not differ between the sites. Mass loss from E. vaginatum litter increased over the gradient from north to south, but there was no such effect on Sphagnum litter. N loss of all litter types was affected by collection site, incubation site and time and all interactions between these factors. N release in Sphagnum was positively related to N concentration. We conclude that decomposition of vascular plants and Sphagnum litter is influenced by different environmental drivers, with enhanced temperatures stimulating mass loss of vascular plant litter, but not of Sphagnum. Enhanced N deposition increases Sphagnum litter N loss. As long‐term consequences of climate change will presumably entail a higher vascular plant production, overall litter decomposition rates are likely to increase, especially in combination with increased temperature.  相似文献

Evidence is accumulating that aging is hormonally regulated by an evolutionarily conserved insulin/IGF-1 signalling (IIS) pathway. Mutations in IIS components affect lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster and mice. Most long-lived IIS mutants also show increased resistance to oxidative stress. In D. melanogaster and mice, the long-lived phenotype of several IIS mutants is restricted to females. Here, we analysed the relationship between IIS signalling, body height and longevity in humans in a prospective follow-up study. Based on the expected effects (increased or decreased signalling) of the selected variants in IIS pathway components (GHRHR, GH1, IGF1, INS, IRS1), we calculated composite IIS scores to estimate IIS pathway activity. In addition, we analysed the relative impact on lifespan and body size of the separate variants in multivariate models. In women, lower IIS scores are significantly associated with lower body height and improved old age survival. Multivariate analyses showed that these results were most pronounced for the GH1 SNP, IGF1 CA repeat and IRS1 SNP. In females, for variant allele carriers of the GH1 SNP, body height was 2 cm lower (P = 0.007) and mortality 0.80-fold reduced (P = 0.019) when compared with wild-type allele carriers. Thus, in females, genetic variation causing reduced IIS activation is beneficial for old age survival. This effect was stronger for the GH1 SNP than for variation in the conserved IIS genes that were found to affect longevity in model organisms.  相似文献

We determined evapotranspiration in three experiments designed to study the effects of elevated CO2 and increased N deposition on ombrotrophic bog vegetation. Two experiments used peat monoliths with intact bog vegetation in containers, with one experiment outdoors and the other in a greenhouse. A third experiment involved monocultures and mixtures of Sphagnum magellanicum and Eriophorum angustifolium in containers in the same greenhouse. To determine water use of the bog vegetation in July–August for each experiment and each year we measured water inputs and outputs from the containers. We studied the effects of elevated CO2 and N supply on evapotranspiration in relation to vascular plant biomass and exposure of the moss surface (measured as height of the moss surface relative to the container edge). Elevated CO2 reduced water use of the bog vegetation in all three experiments, but the CO2 effect on evapotranspiration interacted with vascular plant biomass and exposure of the moss surface. Evapotranspiration in the outdoor experiment was largely determined by evaporation from the Sphagnum moss surface (as affected by exposure to wind) and less so by vascular plant transpiration. Nevertheless, elevated CO2 significantly reduced evapotranspiration by 9–10% in the outdoor experiment. Vascular plants reduced evapotranspiration in the outdoor experiment, but increased water use in the greenhouse experiments. The relation between vascular plant abundance and evapotranspiration appears to depend on wind conditions; suggesting that vascular plants reduce water losses mainly by reducing wind speed at the moss surface. Sphagnum growth is very sensitive to changes in water level; low water availability can have deleterious effects. As a consequence, reduced evapotranspiration in summer, whether caused by elevated CO2 or by small increases in vascular plant cover, is expected to favour Sphagnum growth in ombrotrophic bog vegetation.  相似文献

Most natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster are polymorphic for two major electrophoretic variants at the esterase-6 locus. The frequency of the EST 6F allozyme is greatest in populations in warmer latitudes, whereas the EST 6S allozyme is predominant in colder latitudes. Latitudinal clines in electromorph frequencies are found on three continents. Purified preparations of the allozymes have been characterized for their pH optimum, substrate specificity, organophosphate inhibition, alcohol activation, thermal stability, and kinetic parameters. These and previous analyses of the EST 6 allozymes reveal that the two variants have differences in their physical and kinetic properties that may provide a basis for the selective maintenance of the polymorphisms and an explanation of the clinal variation observed in natural populations.   相似文献
