Addition of 50 mM NaCl to Oryza sativa L. had little effectupon the time of leaf initiation, but leaf mortality prior tothe normal phase of senescence was increased and the onset ofsenescence was advanced. There was no significant effect uponthe day-to-day pattern of growth, nor upon the ultimate length,of leaves that were developing at the time of, or shortly after,salinization with 50 mM NaCI. Leaves that developed after prolongedexposure of the plants to salinity were shorter. Addition ofNaCl, KC1 or mannitol to the root medium brought about a cessationof leaf elongation within one minute. Growth at a reduced raterestarted abruptly after a lag period that depended upon theexternal concentration. Elongation rate recovered its originalvalue within 24 h after exposure to 50 mM NaCl, though not athigher concentrations. Addition of NaCl at concentrations upto 100 mM elicited no short-term effects upon photosyntheticgas exchange. Na uptake contributed to osmotic adjustment ofthe growing zone. When plants were rapidly exposed to 50 mMNaCl, no change in turgor pressure was detectable in the growingzone with the resolution of the miniature pressure probe used(about 70 kPa). It is concluded that the initial growth reductionin rice caused by salinization is due to a limitation of watersupply. A clear distinction is made between the initial effectsof low salinity which are recoverable and the long-term effectswhich result from the accumulation of salt within expanded leaves. The reproductive cycle and sexuality of the green mussel Pernaviridis (L.) in Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, were investigatedfrom July 1982 to May 1984. Histological studies showed thatthe cyde could be divided into 4 stages occurring in a highlyseasonal pattern. The very low (<0.1%) occurrence of functionalhermaphrodites indicates that P. viridis is gonochoristic. Pastreports of protandric rhythmic hermaphroditism may have resultedfrom reliance on fluctuations in sex ratio and sex identificationby gonad colour. These criteria are, however, considered invalidfor P. viridis because differences exist between the developmentalpatterns of the male and female gonads and, further, colourof the female gonad at the early proliferation stage resemblesthe male. Temperature was found to correlate positively withgonad development and with the lower threshold at 24°C.Temperature was not, however, limiting at some sites in HongKong. A joint Principal Component Analysis-Stepwise multipleregression procedure suggested that hypertrophication mightinhibit gonadal development in Victoria Harbour (Received 2 November 1987; accepted 30 December 1987)  相似文献

Gas exchange measurements were undertaken on 2-year-old plantsof Clusia rosea. The plants were shown to have the ability toswitch from C3-photosynthesis to CAM and vice versa regardlessof leaf age and, under some conditions, CO2 was taken up continuously,throughout the day and night. The light response was saturatedby 120 µmol m–2 s–1 typical of a shade plant. Gas exchange patterns in response to light, water and VPD wereexamined. All combinations of daytime and night-time CO2 uptakewere observed, with rates of CO2 uptake ranging from 2 to 11µmol m–2 s–1 depending upon water status andlight. Categorization of this plant asC3, CAM or an intermediateis impossible. Differing VPD affected the magnitude of changesfrom CAM to C3-photosynthesis (0 to 0.5 and 0 to 6.0 µmolm–2 s–1 CO2, respectively) when plants were watered.Under well-watered conditions, but not under water stress, highPPFD elicited changes from CAM to C3 gas exchange. This is unusualnot only for a shade plant but also for a plant with CAM. Itis of ecological importance for C. rosea, which may spend theearly years of its life as an epiphyte or in the forest understorey,to be able to maximize photosynthesis with minimal water loss. Lee, B. T., Martin, P. and Bangerth, F. 1988. Phytohormone levelsin the florets of a single wheat spikelet during pre-anthesisdevelopment and relationships to grain set.—J. exp. Bot.39: 927–933. The gradient in grain number found within a single spikeletof wheat (higher grain numbers in proximal positions than indistal positions) was investigated with respect to endogenouslevels of hormones in anthers and carpels. Auxins, abscisicacid and cytokinins were measured using radioimmunoassay. Measurementswere made on both whole ears and floral organs (anthers andcarpels) of a single spikelet during pre-anthesis development.Similar hormonal trends in whole ears compared to those of anthersand carpels were only found for anther abscisic acid and indoleacetic acid levels and carpel zeatin/zeatin riboside levels.In the distal floret positions of the spikelet where fewer orno grains were set, anther abscisic acid levels were higherthan in those of the proximal positions. Hierarchies of wealth and ethnic prestige among East African herders present an opportunity to test the Trivers-Willard hypothesis that low socioeconomic status should correlate with female biases in parental investment. The Mukogodo are at the bottom of such a regional hierarchy due to their poverty and low status as former hunters. As a result of these factors, Mukogodo men have lower polygyny rates than their neighbors, and Mukogodo women have higher mean reproductive success than Mukogodo men. The data fulfill the prediction that there should be a bias in parental investment in favor of daughters. The sex ratio of the 0–4 age group and the reported sex ratio at birth are both female-biased. Although there is no evidence of infanticide, sons may be neglected in favor of daughters. Evidence from a dispensary and from a clinic run by a Catholic mission both show that the Mukogodo take daughters for treatment more often than they take sons. Also, daughters may be nursed longer than sons.  相似文献

Gas exchange in Clusia rosea has been measured under variousconditions of water status, light and leaf-air vapour pressuredeficit (w, mbar bar–1) which produce daytime (C3), night-time(CAM) or 24 h uptake of CO2. At high light levels, at a w of6.6, well-watered plants utilized C3 photosynthesis while CAMand 24 h uptake occurred under lower light levels and with lowto normal water availability and differing w (13.5 and 3.4,respectively). CO2 uptake was highest, stomatal conductanceto water vapour (gH2o) lowest, and water use efficiency (WUE)highest in plants using C3 photosynthesis. This latter factis contrary to the accepted view that CAM is most water useefficient, i.e. it optimizes CO2 uptake with minimal water loss.It is suggested that the low CO2 uptake in CAM photosynthesismay be related not only to the higher w but also to the factthat Clusia species accumulate citrate which may originate fromß-carboxylation of fatty acids (i.e. an internal sourceof CO2) and does not contribute to night-time external CO2 assimilation.Curves of assimilation (A) versus internal partial pressureof CO2 (A/c1) for the three photosynthetic types, under atmosphericconditions, did not produce a single trend. The trends whichwere produced represent the supply function for the interaction,under differing modes of photosynthesis, of the two major enzymesystems involved in CAM. The authors outline a politics of academic theorizing that seeks pluralism and egalitarianism without relativism and nihilism. Their goal is to help transform the academy by knocking down the walls around institutionalized technoscience without dissolving the enterprise of academic theorizing. Postmodernist critiques have blurred the cultural boundaries between technoscience and popular science practices, calling into question the absolute legitimacy of the former. Yet the positive proposals of postmodernism have been less valuable than the critiques. The authors hope to recover some of the imaginative power of postmodernist criticism by formulating a different politics of academic theorizing, built around the language and practice of "partnering." In the process, they hope to build exchange relations between postmodernism and other forms of theorizing, such as feminism.  相似文献
