The partitioning of limited resources commonly explains how different species can coexist within the same ecological community. In this 2010 study, the diets of three coexisting freshwater fishes (Cape galaxias Galaxias zebratus, n = 27; Cape kurper Sandelia capensis, n = 60; Breede River redfin Pseudobarbus burchelli, n = 77) were characterised and compared in three headwater streams in South Africa's Cape Fold Ecoregion using gut contents and stable isotope analyses. These data were analysed to ascertain whether the three species exploit distinct trophic niches. Both approaches provided evidence that these species occupy different trophic niches, though with some overlap. However, dietary differences among sites were not consistent and were probably influenced by site-specific factors like resource availability. Pseudobarbus burchelli had a broader niche breadth at Tierkloof Stream than the other two species, but not at Waaihoek or Tierstel Streams. Our results also suggest that P. burchelli consumed a more omnivorous diet than do the other two species, whereas S. capensis occupied a higher trophic position than the other two species and consumed vertebrates. Our findings suggest that these species occupy non-equivalent feeding niches in Cape Fold Ecoregion headwater streams, and that diet partitioning might facilitate their coexistence in these systems.  相似文献

SUMMARY We studied the developmental basis of exaggerated eye span in two species of stalk-eyed flies ( Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni and Sphyracephala beccarri ). These flies have eyes laterally displaced at the end of eyestalks, and males have greatly exaggerated eye span, which they use as a sexual display. To investigate eye span development we have compared eye-antennal disc morphology and the expression of three key regulator genes of Drosophila head development, Distal-less ( Dll ) , engrailed ( en ), and wingless ( wg ), in the stalk-eyed flies and Drosophila . We found great similarity in the basic division of the disc into anterior-antennal and posterior-eye portions and in the general patterning of Dll, en , and wg . Unexpectedly, our results showed that although the eye and antenna are adjacent in adult stalk-eyed flies, their primordia are physically separated by the presence of an intervening region between the anterior and posterior portions of the disc. This region is absent from Drosophila eye-antennal discs. We chose two stalk-eyed fly species that differed in the degree of eyestalk exaggeration but surprisingly we found no corresponding difference in the size of the en-wg expression domains that mark the boundaries of the dorsal head capsule primordia. In summary, our expression data establish the regional identity of the eye-antennal disc and provide a framework from which to address the developmental genetics of hypercephaly.  相似文献

Abstract. Insights into the ecology of historic invasions by introduced species can be gained by studying long‐term patterns of invasions by native species. In this paper, we review literature in palaeo‐ecology, forest‐stand simulation modelling, and historical studies of plant species invasions to illustrate the relevance of biological inertia in plant communities to invasion ecology. Resistance to invasion occurs in part because of environmental, demographic, and biotic factors influencing the arrival and establishment of invading species. We propose that biological inertia within the resident community is a fourth component of resistance to invasion, because of the lag time inherent in eliminating resident species and perhaps their traces after environmental conditions become suitable for invasion by immigrating species. Whether or not an introduced species invades can be conditioned by the presence of the pre‐existing community (and/or its legacy) in addition to the other biotic and abiotic factors.  相似文献

We determined whether activation of phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) and a subsequent increase in cytosolic calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) was an obligatory signaling event mediating the increase in transendothelial permeability induced by bradykinin (BK) and α-thrombin (α-T). Both BK and α-T (each at a concentration range of 0.01–1 μM) caused dose-dependent increases in transendothelial 125I-albumin permeability in cultured bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cell monolayers. Both agonists also produced a rise in inositol (1,4,5)-trisphosphate [Ins(1,4,5)P3] by 10 sec that was followed by a prolonged increase in [Ca2+]i. Pretreatment of endothelial cells with the PLC inhibitor, 1-(6-((17β-3-methoxyestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17-yl)amino)hexyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dion [(U73122) at 10 μM for 15 min], prevented the increases in Ins(1,4,5)P3 and [Ca2+]i induced by both BK and α-T. However, inhibition of PLC with U73122 or another PLC inhibitor, neomycin, did not prevent the increase in endothelial permeability induced by either agonist. In contrast, depletion of cellular protein kinase C (PKC) with phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate (0.01 μM for 20 hr) increased both BK- and α-T-induced phosphoinositide turnover but inhibited the agonist-induced increase in permeability. A PKC inhibitor, staurosporine (5 μM) likewise inhibited the BK-induced increase in endothelial cell permeability to albumin. We conclude that increases in endothelial permeability induced by the inflammatory mediators, BK and thrombin, can occur independently of PLC activation and increased [Ca2+]i but that a PKC-dependent pathway is required for the permeability response.
