The present report is a systematic study of children, with and without diarrhea from Costa Rican metropolitan areas and southern rural higlands. Children were observed, respectively, at emergencies, Hospital Nacional de Ni?os, and in a field station in Puriscal; urban children were studied vertically, rural children were observed prospectively (cohort study). Cryptosporidium sp. was found in 4.3% of the cases of diarrhea; diarrhea was generally severe in urban children, but mild in the rural. Infection was detected in urban children less than one year of age: contrasting, no rural infants were found infected, which might be related to breast-feeding, since Puriscal infants were intensively breast-fed for several months, while many urban infants were not breast-fed or were weaned earlier. Cryptosporidium sp. appeared during the warm, rainy and humid months of May through August, when the coccidium was associated with 14.8% of the urban and 15.4% of the rural diarrheas. All urban cases presented dehydration which was corrected with oral rehydration salt therapy, and occasionally with intravenous fluids; dehydration was not common in the rural cases. 相似文献

Habitats and ecological communities occurring in the mesophotic region of the central Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia,
were investigated using autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from 51 to 145 m. High-resolution multibeam bathymetry of the
outer-shelf at Hydrographers Passage in the central GBR revealed submerged linear reefs with tops at 50, 55, 80, 90, 100 and
130 m separated by flat, sandy inter-reefal areas punctuated by limestone pinnacles. Cluster analysis of AUV images yielded
five distinct site groups based on their benthic macrofauna, with rugosity and the presence of limestone reef identified as
the most significant abiotic factors explaining the distribution of macrofaunal communities. Reef-associated macrofaunal communities
occurred in three distinct depth zones: (1) a shallow (<60 m) community dominated by photosynthetic taxa, notably scleractinian
corals, zooxanthellate octocorals and photosynthetic sponges; (2) a transitional community (60–75 m) comprising both zooxanthellate
taxa and azooxanthellate taxa (notably gorgonians and antipatharians); and (3) an entirely azooxanthellate community (>75 m).
The effects of depth and microhabitat topography on irradiance most likely play a critical role in controlling vertical zonation
on reef substrates. The lower depth limits of zooxanthellate corals are significantly shallower than that observed in many
other mesophotic coral ecosystems. This may be a result of resuspension of sediments from the sand sheets by strong currents

Over the last five years, the Human Proteome Organisation Proteomics Standards Initiative (HUPO PSI) has produced and released community-accepted XML interchange formats in the fields of mass spectrometry, molecular interactions and gel electrophoresis, have led the field in the discussion of the minimum information with which such data should be annotated and are now in the process of publishing much of this information. At this 4(th) Spring workshop, the emphasis was on consolidating this effort, refining and improving the existing models and in pushing these forward to align with more broadly encompassing efforts such as FuGE (Jones, A.R., Pizarro, A., Spellman, P., Miller, M., FuGE Working Group FuGE: Functional Genomics Experiment Object Model. OMICS 2006, 10, 179-184) and the Ontology for Biomedical Investigation (OBI). The effort to merge the existing mass spectrometry XML interchange formats, mzData and mzXML, into one single standard mzML yielded significant progress. Also the preliminary design of AnalysisXML was extended to include several new use cases and better support for quantification information. The synthesis and characterization of complexes [(η(6)-arene)Ru(N,N')X][PF(6)], where arene is para-cymene (p-cym), biphenyl (bip), ethyl benzoate (etb), hexamethylbenzene (hmb), indane (ind) or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (thn), N,N' is 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) and X is Cl, Br or I, are reported, including the X-ray crystal structures of [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bpm)I][PF(6)], [(η(6)-bip)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF(6)], [(η(6)-bip)Ru(bpm)I][PF(6)] and [(η(6)-etb)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF(6)]. Complexes in which N,N' is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathophen) were studied for comparison. The Ru(II) arene complexes undergo ligand-exchange reactions in aqueous solution at 310?K; their half-lives for hydrolysis range from 14 to 715?min. Density functional theory calculations on [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF(6)], [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Br][PF(6)], [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bpm)I][PF(6)], [(η(6)-bip)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF(6)], [(η(6)-bip)Ru(bpm)Br][PF(6)] and [(η(6)-bip)Ru(bpm)I][PF(6)] suggest that aquation occurs via an associative pathway and that the reaction is thermodynamically favourable when the leaving ligand is I?>?Br?≈?Cl. pK (a)* values for the aqua adducts of the complexes range from 6.9 to 7.32. A binding preference for 9-ethylguanine (9-EtG) compared with 9-ethyladenine (9-EtA) was observed for [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF(6)], [(η(6)-hmb)Ru(bpm)Cl](+), [(η(6)-ind)Ru(bpm)Cl](+), [(η(6)-thn)Ru(bpm)Cl](+), [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(phen)Cl](+) and [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bathophen)Cl](+) in aqueous solution at 310?K. The X-ray crystal structure of the guanine complex [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(9-EtG-N7)][PF(6)](2) shows multiple hydrogen bonding. Density functional theory calculations show that the 9-EtG adducts of all complexes are thermodynamically preferred compared with those of 9-EtA. However, the bmp complexes are inactive towards A2780 human ovarian cancer cells. Calf thymus DNA interactions for [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF(6)] and [(η(6)-p-cym)Ru(phen)Cl][PF(6)] consist of weak coordinative, intercalative and monofunctional coordination. Iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) deficiencies constitute two of the most important nutritional and public health problems affecting developing countries. Combined supplementation or fortification with Zn and Fe are strategies that can be used to improve the Zn and Fe status of a population. However, there is concern about potential negative interactions between these two micronutrients due to a competitive binding to DMT1 and Zip14 transporter. Studies performed in humans have shown an inhibitory effect of Zn on Fe absorption when both minerals are given together as a solution in fasting conditions. We found that at low doses of iron (0.5 mg) the threshold for the inhibition of iron bioavailability was at a Zn:Fe wt/wt ratio ≥5.9:1, whereas at higher doses of Fe (10 mg) this inhibition occurred at 1:1 Zn:Fe wt/wt ratio. This differential response could be explained by the variation in the abundance of both cations as they compete for a limited number of shared transporters at the enterocyte. Conflicting results have been obtained when this interaction was studied in different food matrices. A negative interaction was not observed when Fe and Zn were provided in a composite hamburger meal, premature formula, human milk, or cow milk. A decrease on Fe absorption was observed in only 1 of 3 studies when Fe and Zn were supplied in wheat flour. Protective effects of a carbon monoxide-releasing molecule (CORM-3) during hepatic cold preservation

There is increasing evidence that carbon monoxide (CO), a signaling molecule generated during the degradation of heme by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in biological systems, has a variety of cytoprotective actions, including anti-hypoxic effects at low temperatures. However, during liver cold preservation, a direct effect needs to be established. Here, we designed a study to analyze the role of CO, delivered via a carbon monoxide-releasing molecule (CO-RM) in the maintenance of liver function, and integrity in rats during cold ischemia/reperfusion (CI/R) injury. We used an isolated normothermic perfused liver system (INPL) following a clinically relevant model of ex vivo 48 h cold ischemia stored in a modified University of Wisconsin (UW) solution, to determine the specific effects of CO in a rat model. CO was generated from 50 μM tricarbonylchloro ruthenium-glycinato (CORM-3), a water-soluble transition metal carbonyl that exerts pharmacological activities via the liberation of controlled amounts of CO in biological systems. The physiological effects of CORM-3 were confirmed by the parallel use of a specific inactive compound (iCORM-3), which does not liberate CO in the cellular environment.CORM-3 addition was found to prevent the injury caused by cold storage by improving significantly the perfusion flow during reperfusion (by almost 90%), and by decreasing the intrahepatic resistance (by 88%) when compared with livers cold preserved in UW alone. Also, CORM-3 supplementation preserved good metabolic capacity as indicated by hepatic oxygen consumption, glycogen content, and release of lactate dehydrogenase. Liver histology was also partially preserved by CORM-3 treatment.
