The competition between Trillium spp. and other species could modify the utility of Trillium spp. as indicators of the impact of deer on forest vegetation. To evaluate whether Trillium spp. (T. camschatcense and T. tschonoskii) are appropriate indicators of the impact of sika deer (Cervus nippon) in the presence of dwarf bamboo (Sasa senanensis), which competes with Trillium populations, we examined the size class of large‐growth‐stage Trillium plants, the frequency of the presence of deer pellets and the coverage of S. senanensis in deer‐excluded sites (where deer have been eliminated since 1995) and unfenced control sites in Akan National Park, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. The result of a cumulative link mixed model (CLMM) suggests that size class at deer‐excluded sites is influenced by competitive understory species, even without deer grazing. The CLMM result for unfenced control sites suggests that C. nippon negatively influences the size class of Trillium populations; however, the negative effect weakened with increasing S. senanensis coverage. Thus, S. senanensis can function as an unpalatable neighbor that makes it difficult for C. nippon to detect Trillium plants. We conclude that the size class structure of Trillium spp. can be a useful index of C. nippon usage under sparse or medium S. senanensis understories; however, it is difficult to use these indices under dense S. senanensis understories because of the weakened negative effect of C. nippon grazing. 相似文献
Phosphorus (P) acquisition through extensive root growth and P allocation to different plant organs through efficient remobilization are important for acclimation of crop plants to P-limited environments. This study elucidated changes in rice root growth and leaf P-remobilization and their influence on grain yield under P deficiency.
Methods
Two pot experiments were conducted with (P100) and without (P0) inorganic P supply using two Japanese rice cultivars: Akamai (Yamagata) and Koshihikari. Multiple harvests were made until the panicle initiation stage. Root and shoot growth response, P acquisition, and temporal leaf P-remobilization efficiency were measured. A separate experiment ascertained the final yield and grain P status.
Results
The Akamai rice cultivar showed enhanced root growth and more acquired soil P. The Akamai root dry weight was 66% greater than that of Koshihikari under P0. Confronting P deficiency, Akamai remobilized some P from its lower mature leaves to upper younger leaves starting from early growth. The remobilized P fraction increased to 72% at panicle initiation under P0. Under P0, Akamai exhibited two-fold higher leaf P-remobilization efficiency than under P100.
Conclusions
Enhanced root growth that facilitates acquisition of more soil P through better soil exploration coupled with efficient leaf P remobilization from the early growth stage improves adaptation of Akamai rice cultivar to P-limited environments. Nevertheless, P-starvation responses did not facilitate higher grain yields in P-limited conditions.
A teleomorph was discovered in crosses among isolates of Leptographium yunnanense isolated from Pinus spp. originating in Thailand, China, and Japan. The ascocarps are black, globose to subglobose, and lacking necks. Ascospores
are hyaline, 1-celled, surrounded by hyaline sheaths, and appear cucullate in side view, quadrangular in face view, and triangular
in end view. Three species were known to have teleomorphs morphologically similar to the present fungus. However, their anamorphs
were distinguishable from L. yunnanense. Thus, this teleomorph is described as Grosmannia yunnanensis.

Cardioembolic stroke generally results in more severe disability, since it typically has a larger ischemic area than the other types of ischemic stroke. However, it is difficult to differentiate cardioembolic stroke from non-cardioembolic stroke (atherothrombotic stroke and lacunar stroke). In this study, we evaluated the levels of plasma brain natriuretic peptide in acute ischemic stroke patients with cardioembolic stroke or non-cardioembolic stroke, and assessed the prediction factors of plasma brain natriuretic peptide and whether we could differentiate between stroke subtypes on the basis of plasma brain natriuretic peptide concentrations in addition to patient's clinical variables.
Methods
Our patient cohort consisted of 131 consecutive patients with acute cerebral infarction who were admitted to Kagawa University School of Medicine Hospital from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2007. The mean age of patients (43 females, 88 males) was 69.6 ± 10.1 years. Sixty-two patients had cardioembolic stroke; the remaining 69 patients had non-cardioembolic stroke (including atherothrombotic stroke, lacunar stroke, or the other). Clinical variables and the plasma brain natriuretic peptide were evaluated in all patients.
Results
Plasma brain natriuretic peptide was linearly associated with atrial fibrillation, heart failure, chronic renal failure, and left atrial diameter, independently (F4,126 = 27.6, p < 0.0001; adjusted R2 = 0.45). Furthermore, atrial fibrillation, mitral regurgitation, plasma brain natriuretic peptide (> 77 pg/ml), and left atrial diameter (> 36 mm) were statistically significant independent predictors of cardioembolic stroke in the multivariable setting (Χ2 = 127.5, p < 0.001).
Conclusion
It was suggested that cardioembolic stroke was strongly predicted with atrial fibrillation and plasma brain natriuretic peptide. Plasma brain natriuretic peptide can be a surrogate marker for cardioembolic stroke. 相似文献
Senile systemic amyloidosis (SSA) is caused by amyloid deposits of wild-type transthyretin in various organs. Amyloid deposits from SSA contain large amounts of the C-terminal fragments starting near amino acid residue 50 as well as full-length transthyretin. Although a number of previous studies suggest the importance of the C-terminal fragments in the pathogenesis of SSA, little is known about the structure and aggregation properties of the C-terminal fragments of transthyretin. To understand the role of C-terminal fragments in SSA, we examined the effects of the truncation of the N-terminal portions on the structure and aggregation properties of wild-type transthyretin. The deletion mutant lacking 50 N-terminal residues was largely unfolded in terms of secondary and tertiary structure, leading to self-assembly into spherical aggregations under nearly physiological conditions. By contrast, the deletion mutant lacking 37 N-terminal residues did not have a strong tendency to aggregate, although it also adopted a largely unfolded conformation. These results suggest that global unfolding of transthyretin by proteolysis near amino acid residue 50 is an important step of self-assembly into aggregations in SSA. 相似文献
In patients with dialysis‐related amyloidosis, β2‐microglobulin (β2‐m) is a major structural component of amyloid fibrils. It has been suggested that the partial unfolding of β2‐m is a prerequisite to the formation of amyloid fibrils, and that the folding intermediate trapped by the non‐native trans‐Pro32 isomer leads to the formation of amyloid fibrils. Although clarifying the structure of this refolding intermediate by high resolution NMR spectroscopy is important, this has been made difficult by the limited lifetime of the intermediate. Here, we studied the structure of the refolding intermediate using a combination of amino acid selective labeling with wheat germ cell‐free protein synthesis and NMR techniques. The HSQC spectra of β2‐ms labeled selectively at either phenylalanine, leucine, or valine enabled us to monitor the structures of the refolding intermediate. The results suggested that the refolding intermediate has an overall fold and cores similar to the native structure, but contains disordered structures around Pro32. The fluctuation of the β‐sheet regions especially the last half of the βB strand and the first half of the βE strand, both suggested to be important for amyloidogenicity, may transform β2‐m into an amyloidogenic structure. 相似文献
Ceratocystiopsis, Ceratocystis, Grosmannia, and Ophiostoma species were isolated from Ips subelongatus and beetle-infested Japanese larch logs collected at several areas in central and northern Honshu Island, Japan, to determine
constant associates of I. subelongatus. Ceratocystiopsis minuta, two species of Ceratocystis, three species of Grosmannia, and four species of Ophiostoma were isolated. Of the fungi isolated in the present study, G. laricis, O. brunneociliatum, and O. piceae were constant associates of the beetles. Ceratocystis fujiensis, Ceratocystiopsis minuta, and Ophiostoma sp. F were occasionally isolated with high frequencies of occurrence but were not consistent associates. Ceratocystis fujiensis was most often isolated as the leading fungal invasion in the sapwood of Japanese larch logs invaded by I. subelongatus, confirming that the fungus acts as a primary invader of sapwood in beetle-attacked logs.

Genome duplications increase genetic diversity and may facilitate the evolution of gene subfunctions. Little attention, however, has focused on the evolutionary impact of lineage-specific gene loss. Here, we show that identifying lineage-specific gene loss after genome duplication is important for understanding the evolution of gene subfunctions in surviving paralogs and for improving functional connectivity among human and model organism genomes. We examine the general principles of gene loss following duplication, coupled with expression analysis of the retinaldehyde dehydrogenase Aldh1a gene family during retinoic acid signaling in eye development as a case study. Humans have three ALDH1A genes, but teleosts have just one or two. We used comparative genomics and conserved syntenies to identify loss of ohnologs (paralogs derived from genome duplication) and to clarify uncertain phylogenies. Analysis showed that Aldh1a1 and Aldh1a2 form a clade that is sister to Aldh1a3-related genes. Genome comparisons showed secondarily loss of aldh1a1 in teleosts, revealing that Aldh1a1 is not a tetrapod innovation and that aldh1a3 was recently lost in medaka, making it the first known vertebrate with a single aldh1a gene. Interestingly, results revealed asymmetric distribution of surviving ohnologs between co-orthologous teleost chromosome segments, suggesting that local genome architecture can influence ohnolog survival. We propose a model that reconstructs the chromosomal history of the Aldh1a family in the ancestral vertebrate genome, coupled with the evolution of gene functions in surviving Aldh1a ohnologs after R1, R2, and R3 genome duplications. Results provide evidence for early subfunctionalization and late subfunction-partitioning and suggest a mechanistic model based on altered regulation leading to heterochronic gene expression to explain the acquisition or modification of subfunctions by surviving ohnologs that preserve unaltered ancestral developmental programs in the face of gene loss. 相似文献
