The primary biodegradability of two types of paraffinic base oils (solvent and catalytically dewaxed oils) and their blends was evaluated using the CEC L-33-A-93 test. The biodegradability values varied between 10% and 75%. Base oil mixtures displayed varying contents in aromatic and polar compounds and a wide range of kinematic viscosity (KV) values, from roughly 10 to 600 cSt (at 40°C), while their viscosity indices were almost constant (90-100). The biodegradability of oils was closely related to their content in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and was also decreasing with kinematic viscosity. For the two types of base oils, a linear relationship could be set between the biodegradation percentages and the logarithms of KV values. These results show that, beside overall chemical features such as the contents in aromatic compounds, KV may be a prominent parameter for assessing the primary biodegradability of mineral base oils.  相似文献

 Granulocyte/macrophage-colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) plays a central role in the differentiation and function of dendritic cells, which are crucial for the elicitation of MHC-restricted T cell responses. Preclinical and the first clinical data provide a rationale for the application of GM-CSF in immunotherapy of cancer. Ten patients with renal cell carcinoma stage IV (Holland/Robson) were treated in this pilot study. Therapy was started with GM-CSF alone (2 weeks). Interleukin (IL-2) and interferon α (IFNα) were added sequentially (3 weeks GM-CSF plus IL-2 or IFNα, 3 weeks GM-CSF plus IL-2 plus IFNα). Therapy was performed on an outpatient basis. The cytokine regimen was evaluated for toxicity, clinical response and immunomodulatory effects [fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), mixed-lymphocyte reaction and cytotoxicity of PBMC]. GM-CSF treatment caused a significant increase in the number of PBMC expressing costimulatory molecules. Addition of IL-2 and IFNα led to an increase in CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD56+ PBMC in week 9. In an autologous mixed-lymphocyte reaction a 2.1-fold increase in T cell proliferation was observed after 2 weeks of GM-CSF treatment, and cytotoxicity assays showed changes in natural-killer- (NK)- and non-NK-mediated cytotoxicity in some patients. Two patients achieved partial remission, one patient had a mixed response. The toxicity of the regimen was mild to moderate with fever, flu-like symptoms and nausea being observed in most patients. Severe organ toxicity was not observed. We conclude that GM-CSF might be useful for immunotherapy of renal cell carcinoma, especially in combination with T-cell-active cytokines. Background: Circadian rhythms in plasma concentrations of many hormones and cytokines determine their effects on target cells. Methods: Circadian variations were studied in cortisol, melatonin, cytokines (basic fibroblast growth factor [bFGF], EGF, insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1]), and a cytokine receptor (insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 [IGFBP-3]) in the plasma of 28 patients with metastatic breast cancer. All patients followed a diurnal activity pattern. Blood was drawn at 3h intervals during waking hours and once during the night, at 03:00. The plasma levels obtained by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) or radioimmunoassay (RIA) were evaluated by population mean cosinor (using local midnight as the phase reference and by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Cortisol and melatonin showed a high-amplitude circadian rhythm and a superimposed 12h frequency. bFGF showed a circadian rhythm with an acrophase around 13:00 with a peak-to-trough interval (double amplitude) of 18.2% and a superimposed 12h frequency. EGF showed a circadian rhythm with an acrophase around 14:20, a peak-to-trough interval of 25.8%, and a superimposed 12h frequency. IGF-1 showed a high value in the morning, which is statistically different t test) from the low value at 10:00, but a regular circadian or ultradian rhythm was not recognizable as a group phenomenon. IGFBP-3 showed a low-amplitude (peak-to-trough difference 8.4%) circadian rhythm with the acrophase around 11:00 and low values during the night. Conclusions: (1) Circadian periodicity is maintained in hospitalized patients with metastatic breast cancer. (2) Ultradian (12h) variations were superimposed on the circadian rhythms of the hormones and several of the cytokines measured. (3) Studies of hormones and cytokines in cancer patients have to take their biologic rhythms into consideration. (4) The circadian periodicity of tumor growth stimulating or restraining factors raises questions about circadian and/ or ultradian variations in the pathophysiology of breast cancer. Introgressive hybridization may cause substantial discordances among phylogenies based on different genetic markers. Such discordances have been found in diverse mammal species including primates. A recent study of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) revealed several poly- and paraphyletic relationships in African green monkeys (Chlorocebus), suggesting contemporary and/or ancient introgressive hybridization among almost all parapatric species of the genus. However, mtDNA analyses alone do not allow us to draw conclusions concerning introgression events. In this study we analyzed two Y chromosomal (Y-chr) markers for 30 African green monkey samples and compared the resulting genetic relationships to those based on published mtDNA data. In line with the results for mtDNA, we found no Y-chr evidence of hypothesized hybridization among Chlorocebus sabaeus and C. tantalus in the northern part of the contact zone in West Africa, and we found two distinct and distantly related Y-chr haplotypes within the range of C. tantalus, suggesting possible cryptic genetic diversity rather than ancient introgressive hybridization in this species. In contrast, Y-chr data revealed monophyletic relationships within Chlorocebus pygerythrus from East Africa, suggesting that mtDNA paraphylies found in this species are most likely to be the result of ancient introgressive hybridization and subsequent cytonuclear extinction of an earlier taxon. Our results accentuate the importance of analyzing sex chromosomal data in addition to mtDNA to obtain more information on the potential outcomes of hybridization with respect to genetic and species diversity. Analysis of more diverse nuclear marker sets is needed to obtain a more complete picture of the African green monkey evolution.  相似文献

We examined the effects of 35 and 90 days of simulated microgravity with or without resistance-exercise (RE) countermeasures on the content of the general skeletal muscle protein fractions (mixed, sarcoplasmic, and myofibrillar) and specific proteins that are critical for muscle function (myosin, actin, and collagen). Subjects from two studies, using either unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS) or bed rest (BR), comprised four separate groups: 35 days ULLS (n =11), 35 days ULLS+RE (n = 10), 90 days BR (n = 9), and 90 days BR+RE (n = 8). RE consisted of four sets of seven maximal concentric and eccentric repetitions of the quadriceps femoris muscles that were performed 2 or 3 times per week. Pre- and post-simulated weightlessness muscle biopsies were analyzed from the vastus lateralis of all groups and the soleus of the 35-day ULLS and 90-day BR groups. The general protein fractions and the specific proteins myosin, actin, and collagen of the vastus lateralis were unchanged (P > 0.05) in both control and countermeasures groups over 35 and 90 days, despite large changes in quadriceps femoris muscle volume (35 days ULLS: -9%, 35 days ULLS+RE: +8%; and 90 days BR: -18%, 90 days BR+RE: -1%). The soleus demonstrated a decrease in mixed (35 days ULLS: -12%, P = 0.0001; 90 days BR: -12%, P = 0.004) and myofibrillar (35 days ULLS: -12%, P = 0.009; 90 days BR: -8%, P = 0.04) protein, along with large changes in triceps surae muscle volume (35 days ULLS: -11%; 90 days BR: -29%). Despite the loss of quadriceps femoris muscle volume or preservation with RE countermeasures during simulated microgravity, the quadriceps femoris muscles are able to maintain the concentrations of the general protein pools and the main contractile and connective tissue elements. Soleus muscle protein composition appears to be disproportionately altered during long-duration simulated weightlessness.  相似文献

In several human adults, certain solar activity rhythms may influence an about 7-day rhythm in heart rate. When no about-weekly feature was found in the rate of change in sunspot area, a measure of solar activity, the double amplitude of a circadian heart rate rhythm, approximated by the fit of a 7-day cosine curve, was lower, as was heart rate corresponds to about-weekly features in solar activity and/or relates to a sunspot cycle.  相似文献

Time of occurrence of cardiac death due to arrhythmia, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction was recorded in 86 elderly subjects, belonging to a group in whom circadian and circannual rhythms in blood pressure and urinary catecholamine excretion had been studied previously. All patients were retired, with no work responsibilities, and lived-closely-supervised in a home for the aged-on a routine that provided little differences between weekdays and weekends. Cardiac mortality showed a circadian variation, with a peak in the early morning hours, coinciding with the circadian peak in systolic and diastolic blood pressures. A weekly (circaseptan) variation in cardiac mortality was found, with the greatest number of patients dying on Mondays and the least on Thursdays. There were seasonal differences in cardiac mortality, with a peak in July and a broader peak during the cold season (December to February). The former coincides with the circannual peak in diastolic blood pressure, but is unrelated to the seasonal variation in norepinephrine excretion. Circadian, circaseptan, and circannual variations in cardiac mortality appear to be the expression of time-dependent, transient risk states for catastrophic cardiac events, which may lend themselves to preventive treatment.  相似文献
