Yellow warblers (Setophaga petechia) use referential ‘seet’ calls to warn mates of brood parasitic brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater). In response to seet calls during the day, female warblers swiftly move to sit tightly on their nests, which may prevent parasitism by physically blocking female cowbirds from inspecting and laying in the nest. However, cowbirds lay their eggs just prior to sunrise, not during daytime. We experimentally tested whether female warblers, warned by seet calls on one day, extend their anti-parasitic responses into the future by engaging in vigilance at sunrise on the next day, when parasitism may occur. As predicted, daytime seet call playbacks caused female warblers to leave their nests less often on the following morning, relative to playbacks of both their generic anti-predator calls and silent controls. Thus, referential calls do not only convey the identity or the type of threat at present but also elicit vigilance in the future to provide protection from threats during periods of heightened vulnerability. 相似文献
In coevolutionary arms-races, reciprocal ecological interactions and their fitness impacts shape the course of phenotypic evolution. The classic example of avian host–brood parasite interactions selects for host recognition and rejection of increasingly mimetic foreign eggs. An essential component of perceptual mimicry is that parasitic eggs escape detection by host sensory systems, yet there is no direct evidence that the avian visual system covaries with parasitic egg recognition or mimicry. Here, we used eye size measurements collected from preserved museum specimens as a metric of the avian visual system for species involved in host–brood parasite interactions. We discovered that (i) hosts had smaller eyes compared with non-hosts, (ii) parasites had larger eyes compared with hosts before but not after phylogenetic corrections, perhaps owing to the limited number of independent evolutionary origins of obligate brood parasitism, (iii) egg rejection in hosts with non-mimetic parasitic eggs positively correlated with eye size, and (iv) eye size was positively associated with increased avian-perceived host–parasite eggshell similarity. These results imply that both host-use by parasites and anti-parasitic responses by hosts covary with a metric of the visual system across relevant bird species, providing comparative evidence for coevolutionary patterns of host and brood parasite sensory systems. 相似文献
Nestling parasites typically beg more intensively than do host nestlings yet these exaggerated displays are also honest in that they are modulated by hunger and age. We hypothesized that honesty was also maintained in the food solicitation behaviors of fledgling brood parasites because the benefits and costs of their begging displays are similar to those of nestling parasites. Begging displays of hand-reared 14–32 days old brown-headed cowbirds Molothrus ater that had experimentally manipulated nutritional needs were recorded to analyze variation in the peak frequency, duration, and rate of fledglings' begging bouts. Peak frequency of bouts decreased with greater age and was lower for females. Bout rate was greater with increasing hunger levels of fledgling parasites but did not vary with age. Consistent and predictable variation of acoustic begging displays with age, sex, and hunger-level indicates honesty in host-parasite communication systems through conveying truthful information about the many possible needs of parasitic fledglings. 相似文献
Haplopappus spinulosus (Asteraceae) is a herbaceous, perennial weed common throughout the western Great Plains of North America and includes both diploid and tetraploid populations. A number of populations in southeastern Colorado were analyzed cytogenetically and morphologically for two reasons. First, initial observations during a routine population survey showed they were morphologically intermediate between the diploid subspecies glaberrimus and spinulosus, suggesting they might have arisen via hybridization. Second, cytological examination revealed that they were tetraploid. Because there was indication of hybrid origin, it was of interest to determine whether the populations were behaving as autopolyploids or segmental allopolyploids. The distinction between these two polyploid types is not easily made since both are likely to form multivalents at meiosis, but equations derived from a model proposed by Jackson and Hauber (1982) have made it possible to determine statistically whether a tetraploid individual is behaving meiotically as an autotetraploid. Meiotic configuration frequencies at diakinesis were determined for each tetraploid plant sampled, and observed frequencies were compared to those expected for an autotetraploid having the same maximum number of chiasmata per bivalent, chiasma frequency and chromosome number. In general, the meiotic behavior of the tetraploids was no different from that expected for autoploids. The initial hypothesis that the populations were derived from hybridization was tested by a detailed cytogenetic and morphological study of the presumed parental subspecies, F, hybrids, and natural putative hybrids. The evidence supports the hypothesis that the natural autotetraploids arose from the hybridization of ssp. glaberrimus and ssp. spinulosus.相似文献
Capsule Brood parasitic Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus chicks hatch earlier than the nestlings of their Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus hosts, but hatching priority is less consistent when Cuckoo eggs are laid after the onset of host incubation.
Aim To reveal by field observations what the optimal stage is for Cuckoos to lay their eggs in relation to the host laying cycle to ensure prior hatching of the parasitic chicks.
Methods We monitored the hatching of Cuckoo chicks in relation to the hosts’ laying stage at which the Cuckoo eggs appeared and also monitored host incubation behaviour.
Results Great Reed Warblers incubated more on day 5 after the host's onset of laying relative to day 3. All Cuckoo eggs hatched earlier than hosts when they were laid prior to the onset of host incubation (day 4). Cuckoo eggs also maintained hatching priority in about 2/3 of the nests when laid on days 5–6.
Conclusions Most Cuckoo eggs are laid prior to the onset of host incubation and this, together with other adaptive mechanisms, ensures the prior hatching of Cuckoo eggs. Cuckoo eggs laid after the onset of incubation lose the advantage of prior hatching in approximately 30% of nests. 相似文献
Generalist parasites exploit multiple host species at the population level, but the individual parasite's strategy may be either itself a generalist or a specialist pattern of host species use. Here, we studied the relationship between host availability and host use in the individual parasitism patterns of the Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis, a generalist avian obligate brood parasite that parasitizes an extreme range of hosts. Using five microsatellite markers and an 1120‐bp fragment of the mtDNA control region, we reconstructed full‐sibling groups from 359 cowbird eggs and chicks found in nests of the two most frequent hosts in our study area, the Chalk‐browed Mockingbird Mimus saturninus and the House Wren Troglodytes aedon. We were able to infer the laying behavior of 17 different females a posteriori and found that they were mostly faithful to a particular laying area and host species along the entire reproductive season and did not avoid using previously parasitized nests (multiple parasitism) even when other nests were available for parasitism. Moreover, we found females using the same host nest more than once (repeated parasitism), which had not been previously reported for this species. We also found few females parasitizing more than one host species. The use of an alternative host was not related to the main hosts' nest availability. Overall, female shiny cowbirds use a spatially structured and host species specific approach for parasitism, but they do so nonexclusively, resulting in both detectable levels of multiple parasitism and generalism at the level of individual parasites. 相似文献
