Insect-associated microbes exhibit a wide range of interactions with their hosts. One example of such interactions is the
insect-driven dispersal of microorganisms, which plays an essential role in the ecology of several microbes. To study dispersal
of microorganisms by leaf-cutting ants (Formicidae: Attini), we applied culture-dependent methods to identify the filamentous
fungi and yeasts found in two different body parts of leaf-cutting ant gynes: the exoskeleton and the infrabuccal pocket.
The gynes use the latter structure to store a pellet of the ants’ symbiotic fungus during nest founding. Many filamentous
fungi (n = 142) and yeasts (n = 19) were isolated from the gynes’ exoskeleton. In contrast, only seven filamentous fungi and three yeasts isolates were
recovered from the infrabuccal pellets, suggesting an efficient mechanism utilized by the gynes to prevent contamination of
the symbiotic fungus inoculum. The genus Cladosporium prevailed (78%) among filamentous fungi whereas Aureobasidium, Candida and Cryptococcus prevailed among yeasts associated with gynes. Interestingly, Escovopsis, a specialized fungal pathogen of the leaf-cutting ant-fungus symbiosis, was not isolated from the body parts or from infrabuccal
pellets of any gynes sampled. Our results suggest that gynes of the leaf-cutter ants Atta laevigata and A. capiguara do not vertically transmit any particular species of yeasts or filamentous fungi during the foundation of a new nest. Instead,
fungi found in association with gynes have a cosmopolitan distribution, suggesting they are probably acquired from the environment
and passively dispersed during nest foundation. The possible role of these fungi for the attine ant–microbial symbiosis is

Aedes aegypti has developed evolution-driven adaptations for surviving in the domestic human habitat. Several trap models have been designed considering these strategies and tested for monitoring this efficient vector of Dengue. Here, we report a real-scale evaluation of a system for monitoring and controlling mosquito populations based on egg sampling coupled with geographic information systems technology. The SMCP-Aedes, a system based on open technology and open data standards, was set up from March/2008 to October/2011 as a pilot trial in two sites of Pernambuco -Brazil: Ipojuca (10,000 residents) and Santa Cruz (83,000), in a joint effort of health authorities and staff, and a network of scientists providing scientific support. A widespread infestation by Aedes was found in both sites in 2008–2009, with 96.8%–100% trap positivity. Egg densities were markedly higher in SCC than in Ipojuca. A 90% decrease in egg density was recorded in SCC after two years of sustained control pressure imposed by suppression of >7,500,000 eggs and >3,200 adults, plus larval control by adding fishes to cisterns. In Ipojuca, 1.1 million mosquito eggs were suppressed and a 77% reduction in egg density was achieved. This study aimed at assessing the applicability of a system using GIS and spatial statistic analysis tools for quantitative assessment of mosquito populations. It also provided useful information on the requirements for reducing well-established mosquito populations. Results from two cities led us to conclude that the success in markedly reducing an Aedes population required the appropriate choice of control measures for sustained mass elimination guided by a user-friendly mosquito surveillance system. The system was able to support interventional decisions and to assess the program’s success. Additionally, it created a stimulating environment for health staff and residents, which had a positive impact on their commitment to the dengue control program. 相似文献

DNA replication mechanisms are poorly understood in most of trypanosomatids, in particular the replication of the peculiar mitochondrial DNA, the kinetoplast DNA (kDNA). To contribute to the knowledge on the mechanism of kDNA replication in Trypanosoma cruzi, we have previously characterized the Universal Minicircle Sequence Binding Protein of this parasite (TcUMSBP), which was first called PDZ5 [E.R. Coelho, T.P. Urmenyi, J. Franco da Silveira, E. Rondinelli, R. Silva, Identification of PDZ5, a candidate universal minicircle sequence binding protein of Trypanosoma cruzi, Int. J. Parasitol. 33 (2003) 853-858]. In this work, we describe two highly polymorphic alleles of the TcUMSBP locus in the T. cruzi reference clone CL Brener and the differential expression pattern of these alleles. A 62 bp sequence in the TcUMSBP upstream intergenic region in one of its alleles affects the efficiency of polycistronic RNA processing and the polyadenylation sites, and therefore regulates the differential expression of TcUMSBP alleles of this locus. 相似文献

Sex‐determination mechanisms vary both within and among populations of common frogs, opening opportunities to investigate the molecular pathways and ultimate causes shaping their evolution. We investigated the association between sex‐chromosome differentiation (as assayed from microsatellites) and polymorphism at the candidate sex‐determining gene Dmrt1 in two Alpine populations. Both populations harboured a diversity of X‐linked and Y‐linked Dmrt1 haplotypes. Some males had fixed male‐specific alleles at all markers (“differentiated” Y chromosomes), others only at Dmrt1 (“proto‐” Y chromosomes), while still others were genetically indistinguishable from females (undifferentiated X chromosomes). Besides these XX males, we also found rare XY females. The several Dmrt1 Y haplotypes differed in the probability of association with a differentiated Y chromosome, which we interpret as a result of differences in the masculinizing effects of alleles at the sex‐determining locus. From our results, the polymorphism in sex‐chromosome differentiation and its association with Dmrt1, previously inferred from Swedish populations, are not just idiosyncratic features of peripheral populations, but also characterize highly diverged populations in the central range. This implies that an apparently unstable pattern has been maintained over long evolutionary times. 相似文献

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major Cannabis sativa constituent, which does not cause the typical marijuana psychoactivity. However, it has been shown to be active in a numerous pharmacological assays, including mice tests for anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and schizophrenia. In human trials the doses of CBD needed to achieve effects in anxiety and schizophrenia are high. We report now the synthesis of 3 fluorinated CBD derivatives, one of which, 4''-F-CBD (HUF-101) (1), is considerably more potent than CBD in behavioral assays in mice predictive of anxiolytic, antidepressant, antipsychotic and anti-compulsive activity. The phytoplankton community of Lake Camaleão, a smallfloodplainlake influenced by a large whitewater river, the Solimões, was monthlyinvestigated for the composition and abundance of itsphytoplankton. The seasonal influence of the floodregime on biomass, species richness and diversity, andits relation with physical and chemical factors(temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, electricalconductivity, total seston and inorganic nutrients)was analyzed and subjected to principal componentanalysis. Diversity was variable along the seasonalcycle: relatively high values were observed at the endof the dry season supported by high nutrientconcentrations. The phytoplankton was comprised of 262 taxa,with strong dominanceof euglenoids (81%). The three sample stations did not differamong each other, except in the dry season, due todata cluster in relation to theprincipal axis (1 and 2), explaining 63% of thevariation. Biomass accumulation as a function of lakearea reduction contributed to theseresults, indicating that the phytoplankton dynamicswere hydrology-driven. 相似文献
