Lordosis: Inhibiting effects of progesterone in the female rat

Progesterone has two types of inhibitory effects on female sexual behavior that have been well-documented in the guinea pig. The first occurs when high levels of progesterone are present around the start of the estrogen-priming process (“concurrent inhibition”). The second occurs immediately after the display of an estrogen-progesterone-induced period of estrous behavior (“sequential inhibition”). In the present set of experiments, we show that the rat, like the guinea pig, is capable of exhibiting both of these inhibitory effects of progesterone. However, rats require higher doses of progesterone than guinea pigs, at least for concurrent inhibition to be evident. In addition, we show that the dose of progesterone required in a single injection to produce concurrent inhibition is higher than the dose required to produce sequential inhibition in rats. A theory of how progesterone may be accomplishing its inhibitory effects on female sexual behavior in rodents is presented.     

The size of the extracellular space in the isolated midgut ofManduca sexta

The size of the extracellular space in the isolated midgut ofManduca sexta measured statically with labeled sucrose and with labeled inulin was 48 and 50 percent of tissue water respectively. Both labeled sulfate and labeled mannitol yielded loading spaces which approached the volume of the tissue water with increasing pulse time and are not valid markers of the extracellular space. A washout method yielded unreliable values for the sucrose and inulin spaces and its use cannot be justified using presently available midgut chamber designs. Values of the sucrose space measured statistically in this study and other studies using different Lepidopteran larvae and different perfusion chambers range from 42 to 48 percent of the tissue water. Agreement between published values of the sulfate space and these values of the sucrose space is fortuitous, the labeling pulses being short enough to yield approximately half saturation of the actual sulfate loading space.     

The evolution of conspicuous coloration: Some experiments in bad taste

Unpalatable species are often brightly coloured. Such aposematic coloration may have evolved because predators can learn to avoid conspicuous prey more readily than cryptic prey. Experiments on young male chicks are described and the results are consistent with this hypothesis.     

IDENTIFICATION OF SEROTONIN WITHIN VITAL-STAINED NEURONS FROM LEECH GANGLIA

Abstract— We have measured serotonin (5-HT) within large and small neurosomata which are vitally stained by Neutral Red dye. A micro-radioenzymatic technique which is sensitive to 50fmol of 5-HT was employed on intact ganglia, 75 μm Retzius Cells (RZ) and a 10 μm ventro-lateral cell (VL) taken from the leech Macrobdella decora. The stain does not affect the levels of 5-HT in either ganglia or RZ. The VL cell body contains 5-HT at concentrations of at least 100 m m . Microspectrofluorometry of all the ganglionic neurosomata which fluoresce following the Falck-Hillarp formaldehyde condensation reaction detected rapidly-fading emission peaks of 509–523 nanometers. We conclude that all seven fluorescent neurons in the leech ganglion very probably contain serotonin.     

Terminal distribution of retinal fibers in the tegu lizard (Tupinambis nigropunctatus)

Summary The retinal projections in the tegu lizard were traced using degeneration-silver methods. Bilateral projections were found to the dorsolateral geniculate and the posterodorsal nuclei. Unilateral, crossed projections were traced to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the ventrolateral geniculate nucleus, the mesencephalic lentiform nucleus, nucleus geniculatus praetectalis, the ectomammillary nucleus, and the optic tectum. Some of these connections are distinctly different from those reported in other reptiles and suggest that important interspecific variations occur among reptiles.     

Size variation polymorphisms of the short arm of human acrocentric chromosomes determined by R-banding by fluorescence using acridine orange (RFA)

Summary One hundred normal Caucasians were studied by the RFA technique to estimate the frequencies of size variation of the short arm of acrocentric chromosomes. Each size variation was classified into one of five levels. The most frequent size level (code) was 3; therefore, this was regarded as the average size. If one excludes the average size, the frequencies of size variation by RFA for chromosome 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22 were 22.5, 19.5, 14.5, 19, and 17% respectively. There was no significant difference for the overall frequencies of size variation between sexes. Furthermore, the RFA technique detects more variation in the size of human acrocentric chromosomes than any other method.     

Mitogenic response to epidermal growth factor: Relationship to number,affinity, and down-regulation of EGF receptors in three murine embyro cell lines

Swiss 3T3 and C3H-M2 cells have a greater mitogenic response to epidermal growth factor (EGF) than do C3H-10T1/2 cells. The latter cell line, however, has a number of EGF receptors per cell intermediate between the two cell lines that have a more vigorous response to EGF. Scatchard analysis of binding data indicate that all three cell lines have one class of EGF receptor, with indistinguishable affinity for the ligand. When exposed to 10-nM EGF all three cell lines “down-regulate” their EGF receptors with the same time course, and to the same precentage of initial receptors.
