In situ seasonal variations in stomach contents of Aurelia aurita (L.) in Tokyo Bay, Japan, were analyzed. Copepods, such as Oithona davisae Ferrari & Orsi were the predominant food items of A. aurita from June to November. The mean digestion time measured in incubation experiments was 0.95 h. Daily rations calculated using stomach content data and digestion times were 2.2–21.8 mg C ind–1 corresponding to 0.58–5.56% of body carbon. The ingestion rate increased significantly with an increase in medusa size, although no significant relationship was found between medusa size and carbon specific daily ration. The zooplankton community in Tokyo Bay is characterized by the significant dominance of O. davisae and it is assumed that the prosperity of A. aurita is caused by the high abundance of the O. davisae population. It is suggested that a food chain comprised of microflagellates, cyclopoid copepods O. davisae, and A. aurita is the most significant one in Tokyo Bay and only a small portion of production is transferred to fish.  相似文献

The milk protein, lactoferrin, is known to have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities. To explore the possibility of conferring disease resistance in plants by expressing this protein, the gene for the full-length human lactoferrin (HLF), as well as the N-lobe, the N-terminal half molecule (HLFN), was introduced into rice plants and expressed constitutively under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promotor. Western blot analysis of leaves from HLF-transgenic rice plants showed an 80 kDa-band, which was about 1-2 kDa less than human milk lactoferrin. HLFN was expressed as a 45-kDa protein and retained its heparin-binding property. Deglycosylation experiments suggested that both proteins produced by the plants had plant-type oligosaccharide chains. The transgenic rice plants were assessed for resistance against disease-causing bacteria, virus, and fungi. Of the pathogens tested, significant resistance against Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) plantarii, the causative agent of bacterial seedling blight disease, was observed in the transgenic plants expressing HLF or HLFN.  相似文献

Distribution and biomass of salps and Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) were investigated near the South Shetland Islands during austral summer 1990–1991. Salp biomass ranged between 0 and 556 mgC·m–3 and was greatest at a station in the Bransfield Strait in late December 1990. Salp biomass was lower than that of E. superba. Two species of salps; Salpa thompsoni and Ihlea racovitzai were found, and the former was dominant numerically. Spatial distribution and generation composition of these two species was different. Spatial distributions of salps and E. superba did not overlap particularly so the January–February period. While E. superba was found mainly in the coastal area which showed high-chlorophyll a values, salps exhibited high biomass in the oceanic area with low chlorophyll a concentrations. Predation by salps on small krill and the competitive removal of food by them, are discussed as potential reasons for the relatively low abundance of E. superba at the stations where salps were present in great numbers.  相似文献

Mitochondrial, microsomal and pellicular membranes were isolated from Tetrahymena cells grown at 39°C or 15°C, and phospholipids, in turn, were separated from total lipids extracted from these membranes. The effect of growth temperature on their solid-to-fluid phase transition temperature was examined by wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The transition temperatures of phospholipids from mitochondria, microsomes and pellicles were 21, 19 and 26°C for cells grown at 39°C and ?8, ?3 and 6°C for cells grown at 15°C, respectively. All phospholipids were found in a completely fluid state at these growth temperatures. From a comparison between the phospholipids and total lipids from pellicles of cells grown at 39°C, a triterpenoid alcohol, tetrahymanol, caused the transition temperature to increase. The alignment of tetrahymanol in membranes was examined with pellicle's total lipid oriented in a sample holder.  相似文献

Cultivar differences in leaf photosynthesis of rice bred in Japan   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
The grain yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.), as well as of other cereal crops, is limited to a large extent, by the supply of photosynthates produced during grain filling period. In this study, flag leaf photosynthesis (LPS) after heading was compared among 32 cultivars bred during the past century in Japan, to determine if the improvement of LPS has occurred with the breeding advance of high yielding cultivars. Measurement of LPS was made for 5 consecutive years in the paddy field, on the flag leaf of the main stem, at heading (LPS-0), and 2 weeks (LPS-2) and 4 weeks (LPS-4) after heading. LPS decreased with advance of leaf senescence from LPS-0 to LPS-2, and then to LPS-4. However, if nitrogen was top-dressed at the heading time, high LPS-2 was maintained, particularly in the newer cultivars. A significant positive correlation between LPS and the released year of cultivar was found at LPS-2, especially in the nitrogen top-dressed plot, but not at LPS-0 or LPS-4. Cultivar difference in LPS of the senescing leaves were not stable through the different years, whereas LPS-0 was stable over years, suggesting that the LPS in the senescent leaf is susceptible to the environmental variation due to the effects on leaf senescence. Cultivar difference in LPS at any stage was closely associated with mesophyll conductance to CO2, and stomatal conductance was also associated with cultivar difference in such a high LPS as LPS-0 and nitrogen top-dressed LPS-2. Endogenous generation of prostacyclin (PGI2)-like substance and lipid peroxidation were studied in the aorta of rats fed on vitamin E-deficient diet and/or vitamin E-supplemented one for 4 to 10 months after they were weaned at 4 weeks. PGI2-like substance was produced by the incubation of the aortic ring in pH 9.0 borate-buffered saline and was estimated by comparison of its antiaggregatory activity with that produced by known amounts of synthetic PGI2. Thiobarbituric acid-reacting substance (TBARS) was determined as an indicator of lipid peroxidation. The generation of PGI2-like substance was significantly reduced in rats fed on vitamin E-deficient diet for 8 and 10 months as compared with that in the animals fed on vitamin E-supplemented one for the same period (p<0.001). Mean concentration of TBARS in the aortae of rats fed on vitamin E-deficient diet for 10 months was significantly higher than that of the animals fed on vitamin E-supplemented diet for the same feeding period (p<0.001). These alterations in the aortae of rats fed on vitamin E-deficient diet were corrected by feeding them on vitamin E-supplemented diet for subsequent 2 months.  相似文献

In rice, caryopses located at the base of the panicle have a lower growth rate than those at the tip of the panicle. The former and latter types of caryopses are called inferior and superior caryopses, respectively. Taking the different growth rate into consideration, sugar status and the expression of genes encoding carbohydrate-metabolizing enzymes in inferior caryopses were compared with those in superior caryopses. During the first 5 d after flowering, superior caryopses elongated rapidly, but inferior caryopses did not. At this phase, inferior caryopses had a low ratio of hexose to sucrose, high activity of acid invertase and the absence of the expression of the genes encoding the above enzymes except for two isoforms of cell wall invertase, OsCIN4 and INV1, in comparison with superior caryopses. At the start of caryopsis elongation in both superior and inferior caryopses, the hexose/sucrose ratio increased accompanied by gene expression of vacuolar invertase (INV3), sucrose synthase (RSus1) and ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGP-L2: D50317). Furthermore, the genes related to endospermal starch accumulation were expressed highly with the decrease in the hexose/sucrose ratio after its peak. Based on the comparison of superior and inferior caryopses, the possible mechanism of grain filling in rice is discussed.  相似文献

Growth and maturity development of the moon jellyfish. Aureliaaurita, were recorded in Vgsbpollen, a small and semi-enclosedbay on the Norwegian west coast, and compared to those of medusaetransferred to excess food and starving conditions, respectively.Mesozooplankton were extremely scarce in Vgsbpollen. The abundanceand biomass of the medusae in the poll were higher than thosetypicallyfound in open waters, reaching a maximum of 22 ind.m–3 and 710 mg C m–3 in June. The average diameterof medusae in the p increased to 8 cm until the last part ofJune, with an instantaneous growth rate between 1.5 and 20%day–1, thereafter retarding somewhat, giving a negativegrowth rate of up to 2.6% day–1. Starving medusae showeda negative growth rate ofup to 13.4% day–1, and all thernedusae were dead after 49 days. Well-fed medusae showed avery stable growth over a 56 day period, diverging from thepollpopulation from early June, and with a growth rate between3.8 and 9.8% day–1. Medusae from the pollpopulation begancarrying planulae on their oral arms when at least 5 cm in diameter,whereas not even the largest medusa of 15.6 cm diameter amongthose in the well-fed group produced any planulae. For the firsttime, it is thus explicitly shown that thesize and maturityof A.aurita are externally controlled through food availability.Scarcity of food reduces the growth rate, but also changes theenergy allocation towards reproduction, which thus occurs ata smaller size than for well-fed rnedusae. Its plasticity makesit possible for this species to exploit environments with lowadvection of food and develop high abundance in such environments,without losing fecundity.  相似文献

The global climate change may lead to more extreme climate events such as severe flooding creating excessive pulse-loading of nutrients, including nitrogen (N), to freshwaters. We conducted a 3-month mesocosm study to investigate the responses of phytoplankton, zooplankton and Vallisneria spinulosa to different N loading patterns using weekly and monthly additions of in total 14 g N m?2 month?1 during the first 2 months. The monthly additions led to higher phytoplankton chlorophyll a and total phytoplankton biomass than at ambient conditions as well as lower leaf biomass and a smaller ramet number of V. spinulosa. Moreover, the biomass of cyanobacteria was higher during summer (August) in the monthly treatments than those with weekly or no additions. However, the biomass of plankton and macrophytes did not differ among the N treatments at the end of the experiment, 1 month after the termination of N addition. We conclude that by stimulating the growth of phytoplankton (cyanobacteria) and reducing the growth of submerged macrophytes, short-term extreme N loading may have significant effects on shallow nutrient-rich lakes and that the lakes may show fast recovery if they are not close to the threshold of a regime shift from a clear to a turbid state.  相似文献

Summary To determine whether sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Poir.) takes up organic matter through the roots from the medium, the concentrations of natural14C (14C) in plant organic matter, atmospheric CO2 and compost applied to media were examined under soil and sand culture conditions. In these experiments, three kinds of composts of different 14C were used. CO2 derived from the mineralization of compost was continuously pumped out from the pots and its direct uptake by the leaves was prevented.14C of plant parts harvested after the 43 days experimental period were affected by the 14C of the compost in the treatments where the compost of rice straw was applied, and which suggested that a significant amount of plant carbon was derived from the compost.  相似文献
