The COVID-19 pandemic has presented significant challenges and implications for the sports community. Thus, this study aimed to describe the prevalence of COVID-19 in Brazilian athletes and identify the epidemiological, clinical, athletic, life and health factors associated with the disease in these individuals. A cross-sectional study was performed involving 414 athletes from 22 different sports using an online questionnaire from August to November 2020. The association between the athletes’ characteristics and COVID-19 was evaluated using a logistic regression model. The prevalence of COVID-19 was 8.5%, although only 40% of athletes reported having been tested. Being under 27 years of age (3-fold), having children (~5-fold), having a teammate test positive for COVID-19 (2.5-fold), and smoking (14-fold) were associated with a possible higher risk of disease. Almost 20% of athletes self-reported musculoskeletal injuries during the period of the pandemic that was studied. Athletes with a university education (P = 0.02), a profession other than sports (P < 0.001), those from a low-income family (P = 0.01), and public health system users (P = 0.04) were significantly less frequently tested for COVID-19, whereas international competitors, athletes who received a wage, and athletes who had a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 were 2-, 3-, and 15-fold more likely to be tested for COVID-19, respectively. Approximately 26% of the athletes who tested negative or were untested reported more than three characteristic COVID-19 symptoms, and 11% of athletes who tested positive for COVID-19 were asymptomatic. The identification of modifiable (have children, smoking, and teammates positively tested) and non-modifiable (age under 27 years) factors related to COVID-19 in athletes can contribute to implementing surveillance programmes to decrease the incidence of COVID-19 in athletes and its negative impacts in sports.  相似文献

The plant circadian clock plays an important role in enhancing performance and increasing vegetative yield. Much of our current understanding of the mechanism and function of the plant clock has come from the development of Arabidopsis thaliana as a model circadian organism. Key to this rapid progress has been the development of robust circadian markers, specifically circadian-regulated luciferase reporter genes. Studies of the clock in crop species and non-model organisms are currently hindered by the absence of a simple high-throughput universal assay for clock function, accuracy and robustness. Delayed fluorescence (DF) is a fundamental process occurring in all photosynthetic organisms. It is luminescence-produced post-illumination due to charge recombination in photosystem II (PSII) leading to excitation of P680 and the subsequent emission of a photon. Here we report that the amount of DF oscillates with an approximately 24-h period and is under the control of the circadian clock in a diverse selection of plants. Thus, DF provides a simple clock output that may allow the clock to be assayed in vivo in any photosynthetic organism. Furthermore, our data provide direct evidence that the nucleus-encoded, three-loop circadian oscillator underlies rhythms of PSII activity in the chloroplast. This simple, high-throughput and non-transgenic assay could be integrated into crop breeding programmes, the assay allows the selection of plants that have robust and accurate clocks, and possibly enhanced performance and vegetative yield. This assay could also be used to characterize rapidly the role and function of any novel Arabidopsis circadian mutant.  相似文献

本文分别选用由木瓜蛋白酶水解天山马鹿茸血获得的肽Ⅰ、肽Ⅱ以及原血为受试样品,研究天山马鹿茸血及其酶解肽对小鼠免疫功能和抗氧化功能的影响,其中肽Ⅰ、肽ⅡDH分别为18.1%、12.2%时,清除OH&#183;能力最强,清除率为50.8%。分别测定了脏器指数,脾细胞增殖实验,血清中溶血素和抗体生成细胞的含量以及小鼠血清总抗氧化能力、SOD活力和MDA含量。结果表明:与对照组相比较,肽Ⅱ组能极显著提高小鼠体液和细胞免疫功能,加强小鼠的抗氧化功能(P〈0.01或P〈0.05)。此外,具有较强抗氧化活性的肽显示出了很强的免疫活性(P〈0.05)。  相似文献

ABSTRACT Mortality due to fisheries interactions has been implicated as a contributor to population decline for several species of sea turtle. The incidental capture of sea turtles in the coastal gillnet fisheries of North Carolina, USA, has received much attention in recent years, and mitigation measures to reduce sea turtle mortality due to gillnet entanglement are a high priority for managers and conservationists. Efforts to evaluate effects of gillnet entanglement on sea turtle populations are complicated by the lack of information on health status of turtles released alive from nets and postrelease mortality. We obtained blood samples from green (Chelonia mydas) and Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) sea turtles captured in gillnets for 20–240 minutes to assess the impacts of gillnet entanglement on blood biochemistry and physiological status. We measured concentrations of lactate, corticosterone, ions (Na+, K+, Cl-, P, Ca2+), enzymes (lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], creatine phosphokinase [CPK], aspartate aminotransferase [AST]), protein, and glucose in the blood and also performed physical examinations of turtles to document external indicators of health status (injuries, lethargy, muted reflexes). We evaluated the effects of entanglement time on blood biochemistry and to look for correlations between blood biochemistry and results of the physical examinations. We observed a significant increase in blood lactate, LDH, CPK, phosphorus, and glucose with increased entanglement time. Alterations in blood biochemistry were generally associated with a decline in health status as indicated by results of the physical examination. Although entanglement time plays an important role in determining the health status of sea turtles upon release from a gillnet, our results suggest that factors such as the depth and severity of entanglement may also have an effect on health status of turtles and the probability of postrelease survival. We were unable to set a maximum unattended gillnet soak time to minimize impacts on captured sea turtles, and therefore recommend that fisheries managers continue to enforce the net attendance regulations currently in place in the lower Cape Fear River, North Carolina, during the summer months.  相似文献

Maize and grain sorghum seeds were sown in pots and grown for 39 days in sunlit controlled-environment chambers at 360 (ambient) and 720 (double-ambient, elevated) μmol mol−1 carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2]. Canopy net photosynthesis (PS) and evapotranspiration (TR) was measured throughout and summarized daily from 08:00 to 17:00 h Eastern Standard Time. Irrigation was withheld from matched pairs of treatments starting on 26 days after sowing (DAS). By 35 DAS, cumulative PS of drought-stress maize, compared to well-watered plants, was 41% lower under ambient [CO2] but only 13% lower under elevated [CO2]. In contrast, by 35 DAS, cumulative PS of drought-stress grain sorghum, compared to well-watered plants, was only 9% lower under ambient [CO2] and 7% lower under elevated [CO2]. During the 27-35 DAS drought period, water use efficiency (WUE, mol CO2 Kmol−1 H2O), was 3.99, 3.88, 5.50, and 8.65 for maize and 3.75, 4.43, 5.26, and 9.94 for grain sorghum, for ambient-[CO2] well-watered, ambient-[CO2] stressed, elevated-[CO2] well-watered and elevated-[CO2] stressed plants, respectively. Young plants of maize and sorghum used water more efficiently at elevated [CO2] than at ambient [CO2], especially under drought. Reductions in biomass by drought for young maize and grain sorghum plants were 42 and 36% at ambient [CO2], compared to 18 and 14% at elevated [CO2], respectively. Results of our water stress experiment demonstrated that maintenance of relatively high canopy photosynthetic rates in the face of decreased transpiration rates enhanced WUE in plants grown at elevated [CO2]. This confirms experimental evidence and conceptual models that suggest that an increase of intercellular [CO2] (or a sustained intercellular [CO2]) in the face of decreased stomatal conductance results in relative increases of growth of C4 plants. In short, drought stress in C4 crop plants can be ameliorated at elevated [CO2] as a result of lower stomatal conductance and sustaining intercellular [CO2]. Furthermore, less water might be required for C4 crops in future higher CO2 atmospheres, assuming weather and climate similar to present conditions.  相似文献

Sexual segregation is a recognized dimension of the socioecology of many vertebrates, but it has not been systematically examined in primates. We investigated temporal patterns of sexual segregation in spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis) using a test that distinguishes sexual segregation from aggregation and random association between the sexes. We further investigated how sexual segregation varies over time as a function of food availability, and then tested other possible factors that might be causally linked to sexual segregation in spider monkeys. We predicted that male philopatry and cooperative territorial defence leads to sexual dimorphism in behavior, which in turn creates different optimal energetic requirements for males and females as reflected in differing activity budgets and diet. We investigated sexual segregation in a group of 33–35 spider monkeys at Runaway Creek Nature Reserve in Belize over 23 mo in 2008–2009. We used the sex compositions of subgroups recorded in scan samples to test the occurrence of sexual segregation at monthly and biweekly time scales.We found that males and females were significantly segregated in 15 out of the 23 mo of the study, and that periods of nonsegregation coincided with months of low food availability. The sexes differed significantly in activity and diet; males spent more time traveling, and less time resting and feeding than females, and they had a higher proportion of ripe fruits in their diets than did females. We propose that sexual segregation in spider monkeys is primarily a form of social segregation that results from males and females pursuing optimal dietary and behavioral strategies to satisfy sex-specific energetic demands. We further suggest that sexual segregation represents an important constraint on fission–fusion dynamics that should be considered when assessing the potential for variability in subgroup composition.  相似文献

目的:探讨急性心肌梗死患者冠脉搭桥(CABG)术前中性粒细胞.淋巴细胞比率(NLR)与围术期心肌损伤的关系,为,临床CABG围术期心肌保护提供参考依据。方法:选取2012年1月至2012年6月于首都医科大学附属北京安贞医院因急性心肌梗死接受冠脉搭桥手术(CABG)患者210例,收集术前血常规及术后肌钙蛋白I(cTnI)?Life酸激酶同工酶(CK-MB),计算NLR;采用四分位法根据NLR水平将患者分为四组,比较各组cTnI及CK—MB峰值,多元逐步回归分析NLR与cTnI及CK-MB峰值的相关性。结果:随着NLR水平升高,高血压病史和射血分数〈50%患者比例逐渐增多;白细胞计数、术后CK-MB及cTnI峰值、术后血肌酐值均逐渐增加;多元逐步回归分析显示,NLR、WBC分别与cTnI峰值呈正相关(r=0.526,r=0.186,P〈0.05)。结论:术前NLR、WBC与cTnI峰值呈正相关,NLR可能是反应急性心肌梗死患者冠脉搭桥围术期心肌损伤的良好标志物。  相似文献

Summary The effect of cycloheximide upon protein synthesis, RNA metabolism, and polyribosome stability was investigated in the parent and in two temperature-sensitive mutant yeast strains defective respectively in the initiation of polypeptide chains and in messenger RNA synthesis. Cycloheximide at high concentrations (100 g/ml) severely inhibits but does not completely stop protein synthesis (Fig. 1); the incorporation of 14C-amino acids into polyribosome-associated nascent polypeptide chains continues at a slow but measurable rate (Figs. 2 and 3). Polyribosome structures are stable in the parent strain at 36° whether or not cycloheximide is present (Fig. 5). However, in Mutant ts- 136, a mutant defective in messenger as well as in stable RNA production, polyribosomes decay at the restrictive temperature (36° C) at the same rate whether or not cycloheximide is present (Fig. 5). Thus the maintenance of polyribosome structures is dependent upon the continued synthesis of messenger RNA even under conditions of extremely slow polypeptide chain elongation. In mutant ts- 187, a mutant defective in the initiation of polypeptide chains, all of the polyribosomes decay to monoribosomes within 2 minutes after a shift to the restrictive temperature; cycloheximide completely prevents this decay demonstrating that this mutant is capable of continued messenger RNA synthesis at 36° C. Consistent with these observations is the fact that a newly synthesized heterogeneously sedimenting RNA fraction continues to enter polyribosomes in the presence of cycloheximide whereas the entrance of newly synthesized ribosomal RNA is severely inhibited (Figs. 7, 8, 9). The decay or lack of decay of polyribosomes at the restrictive temperature is, therefore, a rapid and discriminating test for the analysis of mutants defective in macromolecule synthesis. Mutants which exhibit a decay of polyribosomes in the presence of cycloheximide are likely to be defective directly or indirectly in the synthesis of messenger RNA whereas mutants in which decay is prevented or slowed by cycloheximide are likely to be defective in some factor required for the association of ribosomes and messenger RNA.  相似文献

A diploid Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain was constructed in which the products of both homolog recombination and unequal sister chromatid recombination events could be selected. This strain was synchronized in G1 or in G2, irradiated with X-rays to induce DNA damage, and monitored for levels of recombination. Cells irradiated in G1 were found to repair recombinogenic damage primarily by homolog recombination, whereas those irradiated in G2 repaired such damage preferentially by sister chromatid recombination. We found, as have others, that G1 diploids were much more sensitive to the lethal effects of X-ray damage than were G2 diploids, especially at higher doses of irradiation. The following possible explanations for this observation were tested: G2 cells have more potential templates for repair than G1 cells; G2 cells are protected by the RAD9-mediated delay in G2 following DNA damage; sister chromatids may share more homology than homologous chromosomes. All these possibilities were ruled out by appropriate tests. We propose that, due to a special relationship they share, sister chromatids are not only preferred over homologous chromatids as substrates for recombinational repair, but have the capacity to repair more DNA damage than do homologs.  相似文献
