Pollen wall development in Sorghum bicolor is morphologically and temporally paralleled by the formation of a prominent orbicular wall on the inner tangential surface of the tapetum. In the late tetrad stage, a thin, nearly uniform primexine forms around each microspore (except at the pore site) beneath the intact callose; concurrently, small spherical bodies (pro-orbicules) appear between the undulate tapetal plasmalemma and the disappearing tapetal primary wall. Within the primexine, differentially staining loci appear, which only develop into young bacula as the callose disappears. Thus, microspore walls are devoid of a visible exine pattern when released from tetrads. Afterwards, sporopollenin accumulates simultaneously on the primexine and bacula, forming the exine, and on the pro-orbicules, forming orbicules. Channels develop in the tectum and nexine, and both layers thicken to complete the microspore exine. Channeled sporopollenin also accumulates on the orbicules. A prominent sporopollenin reticulum interconnects the individual orbicules to produce an orbicular wall; this wall persists even after the tapetal protoplasts degenerate and after anthesis. While the pollen grains become engorged with reserves, a thick intine, containing conspicuous cytoplasmic channels, forms beneath the exine. Fibrous material collects beneath the orbicular wall. The parallel development and morphological similarities between the tapetal and pollen walls are discussed. 相似文献

Cultural changes that follow infection of rabbit kidney cells with fibroma virus were studied. Characteristic alterations of cell morphology and development of multilayered piles and cords of cells were found to occur in infected cultures in which cell division was blocked by gamma radiation or by cell crowding and serum deprivation, thus indicating no dependence upon cell division. Fibroma virus infection did not remove blocks to cell division, but it did exert distinct effects upon nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis in cells blocked by radiation or cell crowding. Use of tritium-labeled thymidine and autoradiography demonstrated that after infection initial inhibition of nuclear incorporation was followed by sharply increased nuclear labeling at a time that coincided with beginning alterations of cell morphology and development of cell piling. 相似文献

The entomogenous nematode Steinernema feltiae was encapsulated in an alginate matrix containing a tomato seed. When these capsules were placed on 0.8% agar for 7 days, the seed germinated and ca. 20% of the nematodes escaped from the capsules, whereas only 0.1% escaped from capsules without seeds. When capsules containing nematodes and a seed were planted into sterilized or nonsterilized soil, nematodes escaped to infect Galleria mellonella larvae. When seed in capsules containing ca. 274 nematodes per capsule were planted in nonsterilized soil, Galleria mortality was 90% 1 week later. Galleria mortality declined to 27%, 23%, and 0% in weeks 2, 4, and 8 postplant, respectively. In sterilized soil, Galleria mortality was 96% and did not differ significantly from the nonsterilized soil in week 1, but was significantly higher in sterilized soil over nonsterilized soil for week 2 (81%) and week 4 (51%). When capsules containing nematodes only were used, Galleria mortality was 71% in sterilized soil 1 week after planting and 58%, 33%, and 12% in weeks 2, 4, and 8 postplant, respectively. In nonsterilized soil, Galleria mortality was 8%, 30%, 21%, and 28% after 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks, respectively, using only encapsulated nematodes. When the number of nematodes per capsule was increased to ca. 817, Galleria mortality was 92 % or higher in sterilized soil from week 1 to week 4. 相似文献

Summary Net annual productivity and annual carbon budgets were determined for populations of Littorella uniflora var. americana and Isoetes macrospora in a mesotrophic and oligotrophic lake in northern Wisconsin, to assess the contribution of Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) to annual productivity of the species in their natural environment. Nocturnal carbon accumulation (CAM), daytime uptake of external CO2 via the C3 mechanism, and refixation of endogenously generated CO2 from daytime respiration were the sources of carbon income. CAM activity as diurnal acid rhythms reached maxima of 89 to 182 eq·g-1 leaf fresh weight for the various populations.Maximum rates of daytime 14C uptake ranged from 0.56 to 1.46 mg C·g-1 leaf dry wt.·h-1 for the study populations. Refixation of daytime respired CO2 averaged 37% for the four populations. Carbon loss was due largely to dark respiration, during the day and night. Nocturnal carbon accumulation, daytime CO2 uptake and 24-h dark respiration were of similar magnitude, indicating dark respiration was equivalent to 50% of gross photosynthesis.Net annual production was measured for each population by following leaf turnover. Turnover rates for the Littorella populations were 1.56 and 1.72·yr-1, and for the Isoetes populations, 0.85 and 1.00·yr-1. Measured net annual productivity and calculated net annual productivity (based on carbon exchange) agreed within an average of 12% for the four populations. While CAM activity was greater for the more productive population of each species, the results suggest that the contribution of CAM to annual productivity is greater for the less productive population of each species. Vertical profiles of total dissolved arsenic, manganese and iron, pH, Eh and rates of sulfate reduction were determined in a freshly-collected box core from a 335m depth station in the Laurentian Trough. The relationships observed between the profiles were further examined in the laboratory by measuring these same parameters with time in surficial sediment slurries as the Eh decreased in response to biological activity or chemical alteration.Both field and laboratory observations have shown that arsenic is released predominantly as As(III) into reducing sediment porewaters. This occurs after the dissolution of manganese oxides and at the same time as the dissolution of iron oxyhydroxides and the onset of sulfate reduction. Laboratory experiments indicated that sulfate reduction and the production of sulfide ions are not solely responsible for the release of arsenic to the porewaters, although this process is necessary to create and maintain a highly reducing environment conducive to rapid iron dissolution.The diagenesis of arsenic in Laurentain Trough sediments involves the simultaneous release of arsenic and iron at a subsurface depth, followed by its removal from porewaters by precipitation and adsorption reactions after migration by diffusion along concentration gradients. Abstract Binding characteristics of the purified Escherichia coli O75X adhesin in frozen sections of human kidney were determined, using antibodies raised against the purified antigen and rhodamine-conjugated second antibodies. To identify the adhesin-binding nephron domains, the same tissue sections were double stained with fluorescein isothiocynate-conjugated nephron site-specific lectins. The results revealed that, at the tubular pole, the O75X adhesin bound selectively to the basement membrane of proximal and distal tubules and, with a slightly lower efficiency, of collecting ducts. In the glomerulus, the O75X adhesin bound only to the parietal epithelial cells (Bowman's capsule). The purified O75X adhesin bound also to exfoliated epithelial cells in human urine. Our results suggest that the O75X adhesin may contribute to the uropathogenicity of E. coli by binding the bacteria to tissue structures in the human urinary tract. 相似文献

Control of phosphorus loading and flushing as restoration methods for Lake Veluwe,The Netherlands 总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
As a result of high nutrient loading Lake Veluwe suffered from an almost permanent bloom of the blue-green algaOscillatoria agardhii Gomont. In 1979, the phosphorus loading of the lake was reduced from approx. 3 to 1 g P.m–2.a–1. Moreover, since then the lake has been flushed during winter periods with water low in phosphorus. This measure aimed primarily at interrupting the continuous algal bloom. The results of these measures show a sharp decline of total-phosphorus values from 0.40–0.60 mg P.l–1 (before 1980) to 0.10–0.20 mg P.l–1 (after 1980). Summer values for chlorophylla dropped from 200–400 mg.m–3 to 50–150 mg.m–3.The increase in transparency of the lake water was relatively small, from summer values of 15–25 cm before the implementation of the measures to 25–45 cm afterwards. The disappointing transparency values may be explained by the decreasing chlorophylla and phosphorus content of the algae per unit biovolume. Blue-green algae are gradually loosing ground. In the summer of 1985 green algae and diatoms dominated the phytoplankton for the first time since almost 20 years. To achieve the ultimate water quality objectives (transparency values of more than 100 cm in summer), the phosphorus loading has to be reduced further. 相似文献

(P.) robertsi (Oriental and Australian Faunal Regions) interbreed readily and produce partially fertile progeny. Intrahybrid crosses are much less productive than P1 homogamic crosses. Results of backcrosses indicate that the progeny of the robertsi ♂ × arboreus ♀ cross are less fertile than the progeny of the reciprocal cross. The fertility of F1 hybrid progeny is lower than that of the P1 pure species as expressed in lower female fecundity, egg hatch, and/or viability of immature stages. These 2 species probably originated from a common ancestor and geographic isolation caused genetic incompatibility. 相似文献
