Medical decisions involving children raise particular ethical issues for physicians and other members of the health care team. Although parents and physicians have traditionally made most medical decisions on behalf of children, the developing autonomy of children is increasingly being recognized in medical decision-making. This poses a challenge for physicians, who must work with the child''s family and with other health care practitioners to determine the child''s role in decision-making. A family-centred approach respects the complex nature of parent-child relationships, the dependence and vulnerability of the child and the child''s developing capacity for decision-making.  相似文献

An obligate requirement for selenium is demonstrated in axenic culture of the coastal marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (clone 3H) (Hust.) Hasle and Heimdal grown in artificial seawater medium. Selenium deficiency was characterized by a reduction in growth rate and eventually by a cessation of cell division. The addition of 10−10 M Na2eO3 to nutrient enriched artifical seawater resulted in excellent growth of T. pseudonana and only a slight inhibition of growth occurred at Na2SeO3 concentrations of 10−3 and 10-2 M. By contrast, Na2SeO4 failed to support growth of T. pseudonana when supplied at concentrations less than 10−7 M and the growth rate at this concentration was only one quarter of the maximum growth rate. The addition of 10−3 and 10−2 M Na2SeO4 to the culture medium was toxic and cell growth was completely inhibited. Eleven trace elements were tested for their ability to replace the selenium requirement by this alga and all were without effect. In selenium-deficient and selenium-starved cultures of T. pseudonana cell volume increased as much as 10-fold as a result of an increase in cell length (along the pervalvar axis) but cell width was constant. It is concluded that selenium is an indispensable element for the growth of T. pseudonana and it should be included as a nutrient enrichment to artificial seawater medium when culturing this alga.  相似文献

Neosurugatoxin, a neurotoxin isolated from the Japanese ivory mollusc (Babylonia japonica) is a nicotinic antagonist with a specificity towards ganglionic nicotinic receptors. At low concentration (5 × 10?8 M) neosurugatoxin inhibited the release of [3H]dopamine evoked by 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium (DMPP) from rat striatal nerve terminals, without affecting the response to K+-depolarisation. In contrast, αbungarotoxin did not antagonise the action of DMPP. Neosurugatoxin also inhibited [3H] nicotine binding to rat brain membranes but had no effect on [125I]αbungarotoxin binding to the same tissue preparation. These results support the view that functional nicotinic receptors in the CNS resemble ganglionic nicotinic receptors. Neosurugatoxin has considerable potential as a useful probe for such receptors in the brain.  相似文献

New complexes of the general formulae MnX2L2 (X = Cl,Br), MnBr2L3, CoX2L2 (X = Cl, Br, I, NCS, NO3), NiX2L2 (X = Cl, NO3), NiBr2L3·H2O, NiL2L4·H2O, CuCl2L, CuBr2L2·H2O, Cu(NO3)2L2, ZnX2L2 (X = Cl, Br, NO3, Zn(NCS)2L2·H2O, CdX2L2 (X = I, NO3) and HgCl2L, where L is 1-methyl-3,4-diphenylpyrazole, have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurements, magnetic moments and spectral (1H-NMR, IR and electronic) studies. The ligands is formed by the reaction between benzil and N,N-dimethylhydrazine. The nitrogen of the >CN bond is the donor atom to the metal ions. The bis-ligand halide complexes are pseudotetrahedral, while the nitrate complexes contain octahedrally coordinated metal ions. The IR spectra of MCl2L (M = Cu, Hg) are indicative of the presence of both terminal and bridging metal-halogen bonds supporting polymeric structures. The stereochemistry and the nature of the nickel(II) complexes are markedly dependent upon the anions; the chloride complex is pseudotetrahedral, the iodide square planar, the nitrate polymeric octahedral, while the proposed structural formula for NiBr2L3·H2O comprises Nickel(II) atoms present in both square planar and octahedral coordination environments.  相似文献

In this study, animal‐borne telemetry with temperature sensors was coupled with extensive habitat temperature monitoring in a dimictic reservoir, to test the following hypotheses: behavioural thermoregulation occurs throughout the year and temperature selection varies on a diel and seasonal basis, in a winter‐specialist diel‐migrating fish. Burbot Lota lota demonstrated nightly behavioural thermoregulation throughout the year, with a large seasonal shift between selection for very cold temperatures (<2° C) optimal for reproduction during the spawning period and selection for warmer temperatures (12–14° C) optimal for hunting and feeding during non‐reproductive periods. During daylight hours, while L. lota avoided habitats warmer than optimal for reproduction and feeding during the spawning and non‐reproductive periods, respectively, active selection was limited to selection for 4–6° C habitat during the prespawning period. Although behavioural thermoregulation explained the night‐time migration, behavioural thermoregulation only partially explained daytime behaviour, indicating that diel migration is best explained by a combination of factors. Thus, thermal‐habitat selection was a good predictor of night‐time habitat occupancy in a diel‐migrating species. Together, these results show that thermal‐habitat selection by fishes may be important throughout the year and a more seasonally plastic behaviour than previously recognized.  相似文献

The role of hydrodynamic wall shear stresses on the development of the fouling community structure and resulting frictional drag were examined using a commercially available fouling release coating. Immersed test panels were exposed to three different hydrodynamic treatments, one static and two dynamic (corresponding to an estimated wall shear stress of 7.0 and 25.5 Pa). The drag of the panels was measured in a hydrodynamic test chamber at discrete time intervals over 35 days. The fouling community composition on the static panels was significantly different from the organisms observed on the dynamic panels. Despite different fouling community composition, the drag forces measured on the panels were very similar. This suggests that the frictional drag of low form and soft fouling communities are similar and that there may be a stepwise increase in frictional drag associated with the presence of mature calcareous organisms.  相似文献

A mechanical grooming test was performed on large scale steel test panels coated with a fouling-release (FR) coating (International Intersleek 900), at four different frequencies, during the high fouling season in Port Canaveral, Florida. Grooming at frequencies of three or two times per week was effective at removing heavy biofilm growth and significantly reduced macrofouling settlement. Mechanical grooming at lower frequencies of weekly or bi-weekly removed heavy biofilm growth but was much less effective at reducing macrofouling settlement. The results indicated that frequent mechanical grooming could reduce the fouling rating of ships coated with FR coatings. The reduction in the fouling rating of ships’ hulls by frequent grooming could offer significant reductions in drag, fuel consumption, and the emission of exhaust gases. Frequent grooming could also eliminate the need for hull cleaning and increase the time between dry docking which would reduce the operational costs for many vessel operators.  相似文献

Chromatographic separation of the enantiomers of parent compounds dimethyl α‐hydroxyallyl phosphonate 1a and 1‐(dimethoxyphosphoryl) allyl methyl carbonate 1b was demonstrated by high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using Chiralpak AS‐H and ad ‐H chiral stationary phases (CSP), respectively, using a combination of UV, polarimetric, and refractive index detectors. A comparison was made of the separation efficiency and elution order of enantiomeric α‐hydroxyallyl phosphonates and their carbonate derivatives on commercially available polysaccharide AS, ad , OD, IC‐3, and Whelk‐O 1 CSPs. In general, the α‐hydroxyallyl phosphonates were resolved on the AS‐H CSP, whereas the carbonate derivatives 1b and 2b were preferentially resolved on the ad ‐H CSP. The impact of aryl substitution on the resolution of analytes 1d , 1e , 1f and 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 was evaluated. Thermodynamic parameters determined for enantioselective adsorption hydroxyphosphonates 1a and 4 on the AS‐H CSP and carbonate 1b on the ad ‐H CSP demonstrated enthalpic control for separation of the enantiomers. The development of parentage analysis to track the dispersal of juvenile offspring has given us unprecedented insight into the population dynamics of coral reef fishes. These tools now have the potential to inform fisheries management and species conservation, particularly for small fragmented populations under threat from exploitation and disturbance. In this study, we resolve patterns of larval dispersal for a population of the anemonefish Amphiprion melanopus in the Keppel Islands (southern Great Barrier Reef). Habitat loss and fishing appear to have impacted this population and a network of no‐take marine reserves currently protects 75% of the potential breeders. Using parentage analysis, we estimate that 21% of recruitment in the island group was generated locally and that breeding adults living in reserves were responsible for 79% (31 of 39) of these of locally produced juveniles. Overall, the network of reserves was fully connected via larval dispersal; however, one reserve was identified as a critical source of larvae for the island group. The population in the Keppel Islands also appears to be well‐connected to other source populations at least 60 km away, given that 79% (145 of 184) of the juveniles sampled remained unassigned in the parentage analysis. We estimated the effective size of the A. melanopus metapopulation to be 745 (582–993 95% CI) and recommend continued monitoring of its genetic status. Maintaining connectivity with populations beyond the Keppel Islands and recovery of local recruitment habitat, potentially through active restoration of host anemone populations, will be important for its long‐term persistence.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated whether blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) showed consistent variation in neophobia responses. The experiment represents a test of how personality, consistent individual differences in behaviour, may have fitness consequences. The experimental design consisted of a control observation followed by two neophobia tests, during which the parent's behaviour was recorded using the instantaneous sampling method. Blue tits showed consistent variation in neophobia responses, which was related to total offspring biomass, but not to mean offspring weight or fledging success. General linear mixed models analyses suggest that there may be ideal neophobia trait combinations in breeding pairs that maximise breeding success.  相似文献
