Ecosystem services (ES) in agriculture are vital for the sustainable supply of food and fibre, but their economic value has rarely been evaluated in agricultural crops at field level. The current study quantified three key supporting ES associated with highly modified arable landscapes in New Zealand using a novel, experimental ‘bottom-up’ approach. These services were biological control of pests, soil formation and the mineralisation of plant nutrients. The results showed that background (unmanipulated) biological control of pests in conventional arable farming were severely and significantly reduced compared with fields under organic management. ES associated with soil formation and mineralisation of plant nutrients did not differ significantly between organic and conventional fields. This study also estimated the economic value of these services using experimental data, in contrast with ‘value transfer’ approaches used in previous studies. The total economic value of these three ES was significantly higher in organic fields as compared to conventional ones. Yields obtained in organic fields were similar to those in conventional ones. This work quantified the role that land management practices play in the maintenance and enhancement of supporting ES in agricultural land and showed that conventional New Zealand arable farming practices can severely reduce the ecological and financial contribution of some of these services in agriculture. 相似文献

Neurotropism is one of the unusual properties of Mycobacterium leprae. The organism contains glutamic acid decarboxylase that generates gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. The binding of GABA by M. leprae in vitro was studied by using 3H-GABA as substrate. The bacteria had high-affinity binding sites for the amino acid. The uptake was a specific saturable process with a Km of 66.7 pM, pH optimum of 7.3 and a temperature optimum of 37 degrees C. The binding did not seem to be time-dependent, being complete in about 5 min. None of the known antagonists and agonists of GABA uptake by neurons, showed any significant effect on M. leprae; the receptors in the bacteria are apparently of a non-neuronal type, and different from those reported in spermatozoa and Pseudomonas. 相似文献

Summary The application of fulvic acid to a saline-sodic soil augmented the solubility of zinc by thousands fold. Zinc fulvate when applied at levels equivalent to that of zinc sulphate was more effective in enhancing diffusion of zinc in the soil. Application of gypsum, zinc sulphate and fulvic acid significantly increased dry matter yield and uptake of zinc by rice crop in a saline-sodic soil. Application of gypsum with pressmud or with fulvic acid and zinc sulphate resulted in significantly higher yield and zinc uptake than in other treatments. 相似文献

We have explored a comprehensive experimental approach to determine whether the two condensing-enzyme active centers of the mammalian fatty acid synthetase are simultaneously functional. Our strategy involved utilization of trypsinized fatty acid synthetase, which is a nicked homodimer composed of two pairs of 125 + 95-kDa polypeptides. These core polypeptides lack the chain-terminating thioesterase domains but retain all other functional domains of the native enzyme and can assemble long-chain acyl moieties at a rate equal to that of the native enzyme. The 4'-phosphopantetheine content of these enzyme preparations, estimated from the amount of beta-alanine present, from the amount of taurine formed by performic acid oxidation and from the amount of carboxymethylcysteamine formed by alkylation with iodo[2-14C]acetate, was typically 0.86 mol/mol 95-kDa polypeptide. The stoichiometry of long-chain acyl-enzyme synthesis, measured with radiolabeled precursors, indicated that 0.84 mol acyl-chains were assembled/mol 95-kDa polypeptide. When the small amount of apoenzyme present is taken into account, this stoichiometry translates to 1.94 acyl chains per holoenzyme dimer. The 125-kDa polypeptide of one subunit could be cross-linked to the 95-kDa polypeptide of the other subunit by 1,3-dibromo-2-propanone yielding a single molecular species of 220 kDa. Cross-linking was accompanied by a loss of condensing-enzyme activity. This result is consistent with a structurally symmetrical model for the animal fatty acid synthetase [J.K. Stoops and S.J. Wakil (1981) J. Biol. Chem. 256, 5128-5133] in which the juxtaposed 4'-phosphopantetheine and cysteine thiols of opposing subunits that form the two potential catalytic centers for condensing activity are readily susceptible to cross-linking. Both half-maximal cross-linking and 50% inhibition of activity were observed with 1 mol 1,3-dibromo-2-propanone bound/mol enzyme. After assembly of long-chain acyl moieties on the 4'-phosphopantetheine residues, no vacant condensing-enzyme active sites were demonstrable either by cross-linking with 1,3-dibromo-2-propanone or by formation of carboxymethylcysteamine on treatment with iodoacetate. These results are consistent with a structurally and functionally symmetrical model for the mammalian fatty acid synthetase in which the two condensation sites are simultaneously active. 相似文献

Medically important thermophilic actinomycetes were isolated from 218 (64%) of 341 samples of vegetable substrates and soil examined from sites in north-western India. Thermoactinomyces vulgaris (T. candidus) was the commonest species, occurring in 56% of samples, followed by Saccharomonospora viridis in 29%, Thermoactinomyces thalpophilus in 27%, Faenia rectivirgula (Micropolyspora faeni) in 21% and Thermoactinomyces sacchari in 14%. T. vulgaris and T. thalpophilus were isolated from all types of substrate examined, with T. vulgaris always more common than T. thalpophilus. Of the other thermophilic actinomycetes, F. rectivirgula was isolated predominantly from hay (44%) and S. viridis (56%) and T. sacchari (44%) from sugarcane bagasse. The largest populations of T. vulgaris and T. thalpophilus were found in paddy straw, followed by T. sacchari, S. viridis and F. rectivirgula in sugar-cane bagasse.The widespread occurrence of these clinically important thermophilic actinomycetes suggests that exposure of humans and animals to them may be frequent in north-western India. Studies are required to determine the prevalence of extrinsic allergic alveolitis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis) caused by thermophilic actinomycetes in the local population. 相似文献
