Lake Naivasha is a shallow freshwater lake in the Rift Valley of Kenya. Since the 1980s, when the lake showed a seasonal shift between diatom and cyanobacterial dominance it has become moderately eutrophic. Its algal assemblage is now dominated by a persistent Aulacoseira italica population both numerically and in terms of contribution to overall primary production. Algal and cyanobacterial counts were used to derive Simpson's diversity, succession rate and total community succession, focusing on the 10 most numerically abundant taxa. 170 species were identified, 43 of which were in common with the 143 found in 1979–80, before the increase in trophic state. Most diatoms are indicators of moderate to high nutrient conditions. There is little horizontal or vertical variation in successional processes throughout the lake and although the absolute abundance of cells varies widely, proportional composition is relatively stable. In Crescent Island lagoon, the only regularly stratified site, hypolimnetic succession rates are lower than those in the epilimnion. Overall, community composition is controlled by mixing (and hence light regime) and nutrient availability. With `endless summer' conditions and full mixing, there is a successional pattern of `muted seasonality' adapted to physical instability and environmental stability.  相似文献

Lake Naivasha, a shallow tropical lake in Kenya's Rift Valley, has an unstable water column and is moderately eutrophic. Nutrient (bottom-up) control of primary production is more important than grazing (top-down) control. Experimental nutrient enrichment was used to investigate bottom-up control in more detail. Minor nutrients were not found to be limiting, whilst nitrogen was more limiting than phosphorus with an algal preference for ammonium over nitrate. Sediments form a phosphorus sink but there is hypolimnetic release from the one area showing regular temporary stratification. This indicates that the rate of primary production in the water column could double if conditions change to allow lake-wide nutrient release from sediments. Both external and recycled nutrient regeneration are important.  相似文献

The main river supplying Lake Naivasha, Kenya, the Malewa, drains a catchment given over to largely subsistence cultivation and animal husbandry. The lake itself is the focus for an intensive horticultural industry based upon irrigation from the lake. The Malewa, however, is relatively independent of the impact of industry, and so its contribution to eutrophication of the lake was evaluated. Two periods of study, a very wet-dry and a `normal' wet-dry season showed that the river contribution of phosphorus led to a total phosphorus loading of 1.4 g m–2 lake surface ann–1 in the very wet period compared to 0.2 in the `normal'. Chlorophyll `a' in the open water of the lake was significantly related to soluble reactive phosphorus. The lake is now eutrophic by normal limnological criteria.  相似文献

The growth of a strain of Moina macrocopa (Straus 1820) isolated from an experimental stabilization pond in Marrakesh, was examined at seven concentrations of algae (6.25–6.25 × 105 cells ml–1 and at 5 different temperatures (15–30 °C)). Feeding conditions influenced the growth rate as well as the maximum size that reached 1.8 mm at 25 °C and at the highest algal concentration (6.25 × 105 cell ml–1). The life span and number of moltings reached a maximum (17.4 days and 13 moltings) at average nutrient concentrations (6.25 × 105 cell ml–1). Juvenile stages varied from 1 to 3 and adult ones from 6 to 8. In the temperature interval tested, growth rate increased with temperature while longevity decreased. Temperature had less effect on maximal size than nutrient availability. Population density (but not crowding) influenced longevity and survival but had no effect on growth.  相似文献

Soft water lakes possess a highly characteristic vegetation adapted to limitation of carbon. Based upon hydrology, vegetation and geographic distribution, boreal and Atlantic lake types can be distinguished. Reducing the input of nutrients or liming, or both, the stream or its catchment is generally sufficient to restore typical soft water vegetation of boreal soft water lakes. The vegetation of Atlantic soft water lakes is subject to many anthropogenic degradation processes. Therefore, spontaneous recovery in the near future is not expected and restoration is urgently required. Removal of nutrient-rich, anoxic, organic sediments is a prerequisite for restoration of these lakes. In acidified or acid-sensitive lakes, additional measures against acidification are required. Controlled supply of calcareous, nutrient-poor water is much better than direct liming. The effects of these restoration measures strongly depend on the detrimental effects of processes such as atmospheric deposition, drainage, catchment acidification, eutrophication and reduced colonisation rates.  相似文献

Lake Naivasha has been well studied since the 1930s but attempts to understand its ecological functioning have had to wait until enough was known about its structure. The energetics of the lake has only been studied to date at primary producer level. Following the identification of the invertebrate components of the littoral and profundal benthos, this study was initiated. The absence of native fish species in Lake Naivasha, combined with a fishery based only on three, introduced species, added an applied dimension to the work. The introduction of additional fish species which will utilize unexploited ecological niches has been suggested. The benthic invertebrates form one such niche. Two oligochaetes dominated the community, Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparade. The former had a productivity of 7.4 g m–2 ann–1 (as dry weight), the latter 0.6. These figures are not particularly high and do not support the introduction of a new fish species on their own.  相似文献

Nuclear protein transport processes have largely been studied using in vitro semi‐intact cell systems where high concentrations of nuclear localizing substrates are used, and cytoplasmic components such as the microtubule (MT) network, are either absent or damaged. Here we use the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) technique to analyze the nucleocytoplasmic flux of distinct fluorescently tagged proteins over time in living cultured cells. FRAP was performed in different parts of the cell to analyze the kinetics of nucleocytoplasmic trafficking and intranuclear/cytoplasmic mobility of the tumor suppressor Rb protein and a SV40 large tumor antigen (T‐ag) derivative containing the nuclear localization sequence (NLS), both fused to green fluorescent protein (GFP). The results indicate that proteins carrying the T‐ag NLS are highly mobile in the nucleus and cytoplasm. Rb, in contrast, is largely immobile in both cellular compartments, with similar nuclear import and export kinetics. Rb nuclear export was CRM‐1‐mediated, with its reduced mobility in the cytoplasm in part due to association with MTs. Overall our results show that nuclear and cytoplasm retention modulates the rates of nuclear protein import and export in intact cells. J. Cell. Background

Uganda has one of the highest total fertility rates (TFR) worldwide. We compared the effects of antiretroviral (ARV) prophylaxis for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) to that of existing family planning (FP) use and estimated the burden of pediatric HIV disease due to unwanted fertility.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Using the demographic software Spectrum, a baseline mathematical projection to estimate the current pediatric HIV burden in Uganda was compared to three hypothetical projections: 1) without ARV-PMTCT (to estimate the effect of ARV-PMTCT), 2) without contraception (effect of existing FP use), 3) without unwanted fertility (effect of unmet FP needs). Key input parameters included HIV prevalence, ARV-PMTCT uptake, MTCT probabilities, and TFR. We estimate that in 2007, an estimated 25,000 vertical infections and 17,000 pediatric AIDS deaths occurred (baseline projection). Existing ARV-PMTCT likely averted 8.1% of infections and 8.5% of deaths. FP use likely averted 19.7% of infections and 13.1% of deaths. Unwanted fertility accounted for 21.3% of infections and 13.4% of deaths. During 2008–2012, an estimated 131,000 vertical infections and 71,000 pediatric AIDS deaths will occur. The projected scale up of ARV-PMTCT (from 39%–57%) may avert 18.1% of infections and 24.5% of deaths. Projected FP use may avert 21.6% of infections and 18.5% of deaths. Unwanted fertility will account for 24.5% of infections and 19.8% of deaths.

Conclusions

Existing FP use contributes as much or more than ARV-PMTCT in mitigating pediatric HIV in Uganda. Expanding FP services can substantially contribute towards PMTCT.  相似文献

Potent, subnanomolar thrombin inhibitors 4, 5, and 6 are developed through side chain optimization of novel, benzo[b]thiophene-based small organic entities 2 and 3 and through SAR additivity studies of the new structural elements identified. X-ray crystallographic studies of 4b-thrombin complex revealed a hydrophobic and an electrostatic interaction of these new elements with thrombin at the S2 and S3 binding sites. In vitro and in vivo pharmacological studies showed that 4, 5, and 6 are potent anticoagulants in human plasma with demonstrated antithrombotic efficacy in a rat model of thrombosis.  相似文献

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are continually emitted from plants and are also a component of smoke during vegetation fire. Although vegetation fire events have been shown to have implications for the dynamics of soil water repellency (SWR) and there have been anecdotal reports that forest smoke can induce water repellency, the role of BVOCs in this process has not been explored. Accordingly, we investigated a selection of major BVOCs (cis-3-hexen-1-ol; levoglucosenone; 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol; cineole; α-phellandrene; α-terpinene) that are emitted from the dominant native vegetation of Australia during fire. The potential of each compound to induce SWR was investigated by applying different loadings on acid washed sand (AWS) (300–350 µm diameter) and then assessing water repellency with the molarity of ethanol drop test. A long-chain amphiphilic molecule (palmitic acid) was also applied to AWS for comparison. Although palmitic acid was effective at inducing water repellency, the BVOCs were not, even at high loadings (5 × 10?4 mol g?1). Fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations complemented the experimental measurements. These studies suggested that poor expression of water repellency by the BVOCs could be explained by their tendency to exhibit weak interactions towards the quartz surface but strong molecule–molecule attractions. In comparison, the long-chain amphiphilic molecules exhibited a balance between molecule–molecule and molecule–surface interactions that favored surface adhesion, which in turn led to the formation of a hydrophobic layer.  相似文献
