Previously, we reported that survivorship and growth of field-caged Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea [Müller]) were significantly reduced downstream of the wastewater effluent discharge of the Clinch River Plant (CRP), a coal-fired electric power-generating facility in Russell County, VA (USA). These findings warranted the present study, which investigated whether reduced survivorship and growth of transplanted C. fluminea were predictive of adverse effects on resident bivalves – most notably the Clinch River’s (CR’s) federally protected freshwater mussel fauna (Unionoidea). Thus, surveys of unionoid assemblages and C. fluminea population densities and age distributions were conducted to assess ecotoxicological effects on bivalve assemblages naturally occurring in the CR. Results of these surveys suggested that field bioassays with transplanted C. fluminea were predictive of in-stream C. fluminea densities and the presence/absence of indigenous unionoid assemblages. Relative to C. fluminea, additional field bioassays with a juvenile unionoid species (Villosa iris) native to the CR were less predictive of adverse effects on resident bivalves. Concurrence of transplant studies and in-stream surveys was evident at most study sites, particularly within 0.6 km downstream of the CRP effluent where resident bivalves were virtually non-existent relative to other stream sites having similar habitat conditions. Our findings indicate that in situ field bioassays with transplanted C. fluminea are valuable tools for predicting in stream occurrence and distribution of resident freshwater bivalves, and that field studies integrating multiple bivalve metrics may be useful for prioritizing source-reduction efforts in similar watersheds. Discrepancies observed for transplanted C. fluminea and V. iris have important implications to selection of bivalve species used in field bioassays and warrant further study.  相似文献

The described protocol for repetitive somatic embryogenesis (SE) in Eucalyptus globulus produced more somatic embryos than the primary SE protocol. Primary somatic embryos (induced on MS3NAA) were transferred to the same medium, leading to new cycles of somatic embryos, for at least 2 years. The influence of medium (MS and B5), plant growth regulators (auxins and cytokinins), and light on secondary SE was tested. The MS medium without growth regulators (MSWH) was more efficient for cotyledonary embryo formation and germination than the B5 medium. Reducing auxin (NAA) levels increased the proliferation of globular somatic embryos and allowed SE competence to be maintained on medium free of plant growth regulators. The addition of two cytokinins (BAP and KIN) to the MS medium did not improve proliferation of globular secondary embryos, but was crucial during later stages of the SE process (germination and conversion). Data also show that light may influence the quality of the process, depending on its stage. Darkness should be maintained until the cotyledonary stage is reached, after which exposure to light is recommended.  相似文献

In this article, a three-dimensional primitive equation model is applied to Sado Estuary, which is a meso-tidal homogeneous estuary. Despite the homogeneity of its density field, the flow presents important vertical structures. This article shows that the common practice of using two-dimensional depth-integrated models in homogeneous estuaries can filter important vertical hydrodynamic features, such as secondary and circulating flows. The physical processes associated with these flows are analysed. The strong curvature of the channels and the strong bathymetry gradients were identified as the principal morphologic features of the estuary responsible for the generation of the flows. The model possesses a generic vertical mesh geometry approach, which is used to test the sensibility of the model to the vertical discretization when simulating these flows.  相似文献

The length-weight relationship is important for the study of populational dynamics. This study aimed to describe the length-weight relationships (LWR) of 11 fish species sampled on 18 streams of the Capim river basin on eastern Amazon. Specimens were captured in 2014, 2015 and 2017, using sieve nets with 2 mm of mesh size. Fixed specimens were fixed in 10% formalin and conserved in alcohol 70%, measured for standard length (SL, 0.1 cm) and total weight (W, 0.01 g). The 11 species analysed were: Hemigrammus bellottii, Hemigrammus ocellifer, Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus, Iguanodectes rachovii, Copella arnoldi, Nannostomus trifasciatus, Apistogramma regani, Apistogramma agassizii, Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni, Hypopygus lepturus, Anablepsoides urophthalmus.  相似文献

Two groups of 5 and 6 Babesia bigemina“vaccine donor” animals of which 8 had been splenectomized were challenged 6 and 12 months respectively after they had lost their carrier state. All animals of the former, and 3 of the latter group survived; the remaining 3 animals succumbed to the challenge and died. It was concluded that premunity to B. bigemina is followed by sterile immunity which lasts for at least 6 months. Thereafter it fades gradually with time, depending on the immune response of the host, but can last for at least 12 months. Six splenectomized animals, which had lost their infectivity after treatment of their initial B. bigemina parasitemia at the rapidly rising phase with 1 mg/kg Berenil, died on challenge. It was concluded that a minimum period of contact between host and parasite is required for the acquisition of immunity to B. bigemina. Capillary tube agglutination titers were generally higher in the protected than in the unprotected animals. They remained fairly high for a long period after animals had lost their carrier state, which indicated the sensitivity of the CA test but rendered it unreliable for the detection of carrier animals.  相似文献

Plants use different defense strategies throughout their ontogenetic development. In this study, three questions were proposed: (1) Is there a greater abundance of ants on young leaves, which possess active extrafloral nectaries, than on mature leaves? (2) Do ants exert an indirect defense that is effective against the attack of herbivorous insects? (3) Do mature leaves have a greater concentration of physical and chemical defense than young leaves? These questions were addressed through an ant-exclusion experiment in which two branches of Copaifera langsdorffii (n = 25) were marked and monitored throughout the entire foliar expansion and development period. A reduction in the abundance of ants throughout foliar development was observed. The ants exerted an effective defense against herbivores on C. langsdorffii: the branches where ants were excluded had a greater number of herbivores. The mature leaves possessed a greater index of leaf sclerophylly than young leaves, but the leaves did not differ in the concentration of tannins. The foliar ontogeny of C. langsdorffii promoted an inversion in the defense strategy against herbivores, and despite showing an opportunistic relationship, the interaction between ants and extrafloral nectaries appears to play an important role in structuring the interactions between herbivorous insects and their host plants.  相似文献
