1. Most wild stocks of Drosophila melanogaster can be bred indefinitely on banana agar at a temperature of 31°C. There is no relation between the geographical origin of these stocks and their ability to tolerate this temperature. 2. A single wild stock has been found which will breed for only one generation at temperatures above 29°C. The offspring hatched at 31°C. will breed normally at 24°C. This difference from other wild stocks is apparently genetic, but its genetic basis has not yet been worked out. 3. The mutant stocks of D. melanogaster tested by us will breed for only one generation at 31°C. and their offspring at this temperature are also fertile at 24°C. This condition is apparently a physiological effect of the presence of any of the mutant genes in a homozygous condition. 4. Similar tests indicate that wild stocks of D. virilis and Chymomyza procnemis will breed at 31°C., while D. simulans, D. immigrans, and D. funebris will not. The last two species are northern forms not commonly found in the tropics. 5. Both male and female flies from mutant stocks hatched at 31°C. produce offspring at this temperature if mated to flies hatched at 24°C. Their germ cells are therefore capable of development, and the cause of their failure to develop at 31°C. when inbred must lie either in the failure of the germ cells to reach each other or in the fertilization process itself.  相似文献

It is shown that light lost by reflection before entering a clear and homogeneous sphere or infinite cylinder is precisely compensated by light retained within these bodies by internal reflection; compensation means that the total rate of light absorption by infinitely dilute photoreceptors as integrated through the whole of these bodies or even through any concentric or coaxial shell making them up is independent of surface reflection. In the Phycomyces sporangiophore this theorem precludes a reflection explanation of R, the polarization dependence of the light growth response. An alternative explanation based upon anisotropic absorption by the receptors is explored and found tenable. Formulae are derived for R in any transparent cylindrical cell as a function of the constants of anisotropic absorption by the photoreceptors taken as a group (CH' and CL'), of the radial position of the receptors, and of the refractive indices of the cell (n) and of the medium (N). It is inferred that the photoreceptors in the Phycomyces sporangiophore are most absorbent for light vibrating in the direction of a hoop around a barrel. Orientation of the receptors by linkage to the cell wall is then shown to be a plausible explanation of the inferred anisotropy. On the basis of anisotropic reception, it is predicted that R should be constant for any N > n, and it is shown how CH', C,L' and the radial position of the receptors may all be obtained from a careful determination of R as a function of N.  相似文献

In living cells, many biochemical processes are spatially organized: they have a location, and often a direction, in cellular space. In the hands of Peter Mitchell and Jennifer Moyle, the chemiosmotic formulation of this principle proved to be the key to understanding biological energy transduction and related aspects of cellular physiology. For H. E. Huxley and A. F. Huxley, it provided the basis for unravelling the mechanism of muscle contraction; and vectorial biochemistry continues to reverberate through research on cytoplasmic transport, motility and organization. The spatial deployment of biochemical processes serves here as a point of departure for an inquiry into morphogenesis and self-organization during the apical growth of fungal hyphae.  相似文献

From 1969 through December 31, 1981, a total of 232 patients with an ejection fraction of 0.2 or less (normal 0.67) had myocardial revascularization. The in-hospital mortality in these patients decreased from 25 deaths in 82 patients (30%) from 1969 through 1972 to 10 deaths in 150 patients (7%) from 1973 through December 31, 1981. There was a 24% five-year survival for patients in congestive heart failure at the time of operation, a 40% survival at five years for patients successfully treated for failure before operation and a 60% five-year survival for those patients who had never been in failure. These results would appear to be better than those with cardiac transplantation, with neither the restrictions for operation nor the long-term immunotherapy required with cardiac transplantation.  相似文献

The present study was designed to establish the role of an essential hormone controlling sex expression in cucumber. A potent anti-ethylene agent, AgNO3, completely inhibited pistillate flower formation caused by IAA, ACC or ethephon. Inhibitors of ethylene biosynthesis, AVG and CoCl2 also suppressed feminization due to exogenous IAA or ACC. Though AVG also suppressed ethephon-induced feminization, this may be due to the second effect of AVG rather than the effect on ACC biosynthesis. These results confirm that ethylene is a major factor regulating feminization and that exogenous auxin induces pistillate flower formation through its stimulation of ethylene production, rather than ACC production.  相似文献
