Summary It has been suggested that C. porosus select nest sites which provide a source of freshwater for hatchlings during the dry season. From a mark-recapture study, we conclude that hatchling C. porosus can survive and grow in hyperosmotic saltwater without drinking freshwater. Hence, the siting of nests is unlikely to be the consequence of a requirement by hatchlings for freshwater. Considered along with other information, our observations imply that hatchling C. porosus have functional salt glands.  相似文献

Gravid females of the viviparous scincid lizard Eulamprus heatwolei were maintained in the laboratory, with some females allowed to bask for 8 h/day and others for only 2 h/day. Maternal basking regimes influenced the gestation period, and significantly affected the body shapes, activity levels and running speeds of the offspring born to these females. Neonates from females with lesser basking opportunities were relatively short and fat, were very active, and were relatively fast runners. Effects of the embryos' thermal regime on the young lizards' morphology and running speed were still detectable two months after birth. Thus, much of the morphological and behavioral variation among neonatal reptiles may arise from phenotypically plastic responses to the thermal environments experienced during embryonic development, rather than from heritable genetic differences among individuals. Hence, selection on maternal thermoregulatory behavior may be an important avenue for adaptive modifications to neonatal phenotypes in reptiles.  相似文献

Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is a methodology that is gaining widespread use in the phylogenetics community and is central to phylogenetic software packages such as MrBayes. An important issue for users of MCMC methods is how to select appropriate values for adjustable parameters such as the length of the Markov chain or chains, the sampling density, the proposal mechanism, and, if Metropolis-coupled MCMC is being used, the number of heated chains and their temperatures. Although some parameter settings have been examined in detail in the literature, others are frequently chosen with more regard to computational time or personal experience with other data sets. Such choices may lead to inadequate sampling of tree space or an inefficient use of computational resources. We performed a detailed study of convergence and mixing for 70 randomly selected, putatively orthologous protein sets with different sizes and taxonomic compositions. Replicated runs from multiple random starting points permit a more rigorous assessment of convergence, and we developed two novel statistics, delta and epsilon, for this purpose. Although likelihood values invariably stabilized quickly, adequate sampling of the posterior distribution of tree topologies took considerably longer. Our results suggest that multimodality is common for data sets with 30 or more taxa and that this results in slow convergence and mixing. However, we also found that the pragmatic approach of combining data from several short, replicated runs into a "metachain" to estimate bipartition posterior probabilities provided good approximations, and that such estimates were no worse in approximating a reference posterior distribution than those obtained using a single long run of the same length as the metachain. Precision appears to be best when heated Markov chains have low temperatures, whereas chains with high temperatures appear to sample trees with high posterior probabilities only rarely.  相似文献

White-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys leucurus) are spontaneous hibernators that enter torpor each fall, whereas black-tailed prairie dogs (C. ludovicianus) hibernate facultatively only when food- or water-stressed during the winter. The body masses of both species greatly increase during the fall feeding period, with most of this gain in the form of depot fat. Body fat is utilized during winter fasting and/or hibernation. We measured the activities of fatty acid synthase (FAS), ATP-citrate lyase (ACL), malic enzyme (ME), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) in the tissues of both C.leucurus (hibernating and euthermic) and C. ludovicianus (euthermic only) under controlled conditions. The activities of FAS, ACL, and G6PDH in the liver all decreased during hibernation. The activities of ME and G6PDH in white adipose tissue (WAT) were also reduced during hibernation. Euthermic C. leucurus and euthermic C. ludovicianus differed only in brown adipose (BAT) ACL and WAT G6PDH activities. No significant differences in HSL activities were found between these two species or between euthermic and hibernating animals. These results suggest that this seasonal body fat cycle is due, at least in part, to seasonal variations in the activities of FAS, ME, ACL, and G6PDH that affect the rate of fatty acid synthesis. This study also demonstrates that spontaneous hibernators do not have a greater capacity to synthesize fatty acids during the fall than facultative hibernators, as previously suggested.  相似文献

A genetic screen for mutants of Arabidopsis that are hypersensitive to UV light was developed and used to isolate a new mutant designated uvh1. UV hypersensitivity in uvh1 was due to a single recessive trait that is probably located on chromosome 3. Although isolated as hypersensitive to an acute exposure to UV-C light, uvh1 was also hypersensitive to UV-B wavelengths, which are present in sunlight that reaches the earth's surface. UV-B damage to both wild-type and uvh1 plants could be significantly reduced by subsequent exposure of UV-irradiated plants to photoreactivating light, showing that photoreactivation of UV-B damage is important for plant viability and that uvh1 plants are not defective in photoreactivation. A new assay for DNA damage, the Dral assay, was developed and used to show that exposure of wild-type and uvh1 plants to a given dose of UV light induces the same amount of damage in chloroplast and nuclear DNA. Thus, uvh1 is not defective in a UV protective mechanism. uvh1 plants were also found to be hypersensitive to ionizing radiation. These results suggest that uvh1 is defective in a repair or tolerance mechanism that normally provides plants with resistance to several types of DNA damage.  相似文献
