This study was conducted in order to understand the mechanism of Cd and Pb adsorption in aqueous solutions by raw and modified saw dust (SD) of Alstonia macrophylla. The biosorbent was characterized by Boehm titration, specific surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersion (EDAX), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. SD was treated using organic acids and bases. Batch studies were conducted for raw and modified SD to determine the effect of initial concentration, pH, ionic strength, and contact time on metal adsorption. The specific surface area and total basic and acidic groups of SD were 77 m2/g and 1521 and 2312 μmol/g, respectively. The adsorption of both metals onto SD was pH dependent. No ionic strength dependency was observed in adsorption of Cd and Pb at pH >6, indicating inner sphere surface complexation. Monolayer adsorption is dominant in both metal sorptions by SD. Furthermore, there is no competition between metals on adsorption and raw SD was found to be suitable for removal of Cd and Pb as compared to organic acid– or base-treated SD. Maximum adsorption capacity of SD for Cd and Pb were 30.6 and 204.2 mg/g, respectively. Results indicate that the A. macrophylla SD can be considered as a potential material for metal ion removal from wastewater.  相似文献

After cholesterol is transported into the mitochondria of steroidogenic tissues, the first steroid, pregnenolone, is synthesized in adrenal and gonadal tissues to initiate steroid synthesis by catalyzing the conversion of pregnenolone to progesterone, which is mediated by the inner mitochondrial enzyme 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 (3βHSD2). We report that the mitochondrial translocase Tom22 is essential for metabolic conversion, as its knockdown by small interfering RNA (siRNA) completely ablated progesterone conversion in both steroidogenic mouse Leydig MA-10 and human adrenal NCI cells. Tom22 forms a 500-kDa complex with mitochondrial proteins associated with 3βHSD2. Although the absence of Tom22 did not inhibit mitochondrial import of cytochrome P450scc (cytochrome P450 side chain cleavage enzyme) and aldosterone synthase, it did inhibit 3βHSD2 expression. Electron microscopy showed that Tom22 is localized at the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM), while 3βHSD2 is localized at the inner mitochondrial space (IMS), where it interacts through a specific region with Tom22 with its C-terminal amino acids and a small amino acid segment of Tom22 exposed to the IMS. Therefore, Tom22 is a critical regulator of steroidogenesis, and thus, it is essential for mammalian survival.  相似文献

Biochar can be used as an adsorbent for phosphate removal in aquatic environments to treat eutrophication problems. Designing biochars that have large phosphate adsorption capacity through altering pyrolysis conditions and applying activation techniques will improve phosphate removal efficiency. In this study, four pine sawdust biochars were produced at 300 and 550 °C with and without steam activation. Batch sorption experiments including isotherm and kinetic studies were conducted to understand how phosphate removal capabilities and adsorption mechanisms of biochars were affected by pyrolysis temperature and steam activation. Our results showed that the steam activation and pyrolysis temperature did not affect phosphate adsorption by the biochars. The four biochars removed <4% of phosphate from the aqueous solution, which were not affected by the pH of the solution and biochar application rate. The repulsion forces between biochar surfaces and phosphate ions were likely the cause of the low adsorption.  相似文献
