Backgrounds

An outbreak of lung injury among South Korean adults was examined in a hospital-based case-control study, and the suspected cause was exposure to humidifier disinfectant (HD). However, a case-control study with community-dwelling controls was needed to validate the previous study’s findings, and to confirm the exposure-response relationship between HD and lung injury.

Methods

Each case of lung injury was matched with four community-dwelling controls, according to age (±3 years), sex, residence, and history of childbirth since 2006 (for women). Environmental risk factors, which included type and use of humidifier and HD, were investigated using a structured questionnaire during August 2011. The exposure to HD was calculated for both cases and controls, and the corresponding risks of lung injury were compared.

Results

Among 28 eligible cases, 16 patients agreed to participate, and 60 matched controls were considered eligible for this study. The cases were more likely to have been exposed to HD (odds ratio: 116.1, 95% confidence interval: 6.5–2,063.7). All cases were exposed to HDs containing polyhexamethyleneguanidine phosphate, and the risk of lung injury increased with the cumulative exposure, duration of exposure, and exposure per day.

Conclusions

This study revealed a statistically significant exposure-response relationship between HD and lung injury. Therefore, continuous monitoring and stricter evaluation of environmental chemicals’ safety should be conducted.  相似文献

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary solid malignant bone tumor, and its metastasis is a prominent cause of high mortality in patients. In this study, a prognosis risk signature was constructed based on metastasis-associated genes. Four microarrays datasets with clinical information were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus, and 256 metastasis-associated genes were identified by limma package. Further, a protein-protein interaction network was constructed, and survival analysis was performed using data from the Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments data matrix, identifying 19 genes correlated with prognosis. Six genes were selected by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression for multivariate cox analysis. Finally, a three-gene (MYC, CPE, and LY86) risk signature was constructed, and datasets GSE21257 and GSE16091 were used to validate the prediction efficiency of the signature. The survival times of low- and high-risk groups were significantly different in the training set and validation set. Additionally, gene set enrichment analysis revealed that the genes in the signature may affect the cell cycle, gap junctions, and interleukin-6 production. Therefore, the three-gene survival risk signature could potentially predict the prognosis of patients with OS. Further, proteins encoded by CPE and LY86 may provide novel insights into the prediction of OS prognosis and therapeutic targets.  相似文献

Summary Trichloroethylene (TCE) was reductively dechlorinated to cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (cDCE) by sulfate-reducing cultures enriched from a contaminated subsurface soil. The highest observed transformation rate of TCE was 213 mol l–1 per day at 35° C. The predominant biotransformation product was cDCE. However, further dechlorination of cDCE was not observed in most of the cultures. Methane production was insignificant and active sulfate reduction was achieved by maintaining excess sulfate. A comparison of sodium sulfide and sodium dithionite for their effect on the transformation of TCE revealed that the latter is a better reducing agent. The extent of TCE transformation in 25 days was ca. 20% higher in the dithionite-amended cultures. A decrease in the rate and extent of TCE transformation was observed with an increase in the concentration of bromoethanesulfonate up to 50 mabetm. Offprint requests to: S. G. Pavlostathis  相似文献

Evidence suggests that global maize yield declines with a warming climate, particularly with extreme heat events. However, the degree to which important maize processes such as biomass growth rate, growing season length (GSL) and grain formation are impacted by an increase in temperature is uncertain. Such knowledge is necessary to understand yield responses and develop crop adaptation strategies under warmer climate. Here crop models, satellite observations, survey, and field data were integrated to investigate how high temperature stress influences maize yield in the U.S. Midwest. We showed that both observational evidence and crop model ensemble mean (MEM) suggests the nonlinear sensitivity in yield was driven by the intensified sensitivity of harvest index (HI), but MEM underestimated the warming effects through HI and overstated the effects through GSL. Further analysis showed that the intensified sensitivity in HI mainly results from a greater sensitivity of yield to high temperature stress during the grain filling period, which explained more than half of the yield reduction. When warming effects were decomposed into direct heat stress and indirect water stress (WS), observational data suggest that yield is more reduced by direct heat stress (?4.6 ± 1.0%/°C) than by WS (?1.7 ± 0.65%/°C), whereas MEM gives opposite results. This discrepancy implies that yield reduction by heat stress is underestimated, whereas the yield benefit of increasing atmospheric CO2 might be overestimated in crop models, because elevated CO2 brings yield benefit through water conservation effect but produces limited benefit over heat stress. Our analysis through integrating data and crop models suggests that future adaptation strategies should be targeted at the heat stress during grain formation and changes in agricultural management need to be better accounted for to adequately estimate the effects of heat stress.  相似文献

Previous research has confirmed that cobalt ion and dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBI) are the precursors of vitamin B12 biosynthesis, and porphobilinogen synthase (PBG synthase) is a zinc-requiring enzyme. In this paper, the effects of Zn2+, Co2+ and DMBI on vitamin B12 production by Pseudomonas denitrificans in shake flasks were studied. Present experimental results demonstrated that the addition of the above mentioned three components to the fermentation medium could significantly stimulate the biosynthesis of vitamin B12. The concentrations of zinc sulphate, cobaltous chloride and DMBI in the fermentation medium were further optimized with rotatable orthogonal central composite design and statistical analysis by Data Processing System (DPS) software. As a result, vitamin B12 production was increased from 69.36 ± 0.66 to 78.23 ± 0.92 μg/ml.  相似文献
