The slug Arion lusitanicus Mabille (Gastropoda: Pulmonata: Arionidae) is an invasive species which has spread to most parts of Europe. The area of origin is unknown, but A. lusitanicus seems to cope well with the local conditions in the countries to which it has migrated. It spreads rapidly, occurs often in high densities and has become a serious pest in most European countries. Therefore there is an urgent need for better knowledge of the ecophysiology of A. lusitanicus, such as the influence of climatic conditions, in order to develop prognostic models and strategies for novel pest management practises.The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of subzero temperatures in relation to winter survival. A. lusitanicus is shown to be freeze-tolerant in some life stages. Most juveniles and some adult slugs survived being frozen at −1.3 °C for 3 days, but none of the slugs survived freezing at −3 °C. The eggs survived subzero temperatures (down to −2 °C) probably by supercooling. Juveniles and adults may also survive in a supercooled state (down to −3 °C) but are generally poor supercoolers. Therefore, the winter survival of A. lusitanicus depends to a high degree on migration to habitats protected from low winter temperatures, e.g. under plant litter, buried in the soil or in compost heaps. 相似文献

Berner et al. (2010) found that freshwater adaptation of three-spined sticklebacks had not followed the direction of maximal evolvability. Based on this, they suggested that ancestral variance structure has not appreciably biased adaptive diversification. We reanalyze their data to show that evolution has happened in directions of much larger than average evolvability, and we conclude that their data are consistent with an influence of ancestral variational constraints. 相似文献

Technologies for in vitro embryo production have the potential to enhance the efficiency of cattle production systems. However, utilization of in vitro-produced embryos for transfer remains limited throughout much of the world. Despite improvements over the past two decades, problems associated with the production of bovine embryos in vitro still exist which limit the widespread commercial application of this technology. In particular, bovine embryos produced in vitro have a reduced capacity to establish and maintain pregnancy as compared with their in vivo-derived counterparts. Embryo competence for survival following transfer is improved by in vivo culture in the sheep oviduct, thus indicating that standard embryo culture conditions are sub-optimal. Therefore, one strategy to improve post-transfer survival is to modify embryo culture media to more closely mimic the in vivo microenvironment. The maternal environment in which the bovine embryo develops in vivo contains various growth factors, cytokines, hormones, and other regulatory molecules. In addition to affecting bovine embryo development in vitro, recent research indicates that embryo competence for survival following transfer can also be improved when such molecules are added to embryo culture medium. Among the specific molecules that can increase post-transfer embryo survival are insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), colony stimulating factor-2 (CSF-2) and hyaluronan. This paper will review the effects IGF-1, CSF-2 and hyaluronan on post-culture embryo viability and discuss the potential mechanisms through which each of these molecules improves post-transfer survival. 相似文献

The food-borne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes is a problem for food processors and consumers alike, as the organism is resistant to harsh environmental conditions and inimical barriers implemented to prevent the survival and/or growth of harmful bacteria. One mechanism by which listeriae mediate survival is through the accumulation of compatible solutes, such as proline, betaine and carnitine. In other bacteria, including Escherichia coli, the synthesis and accumulation of another compatible solute, trehalose, are known to aid in the survival of stressed cells. The objective of this research was to investigate trehalose metabolism in L. monocytogenes, where the sugar is thought to be transferred across the cytoplasmic membrane via a specific phosphoenolpyruvate phosphotransferase system and phosphorylation to trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P). The latter is subsequently broken down into glucose and glucose-6-phosphate by α,α-(1,1) phosphotrehalase, the putative product of the treA gene. Here we report on an isogenic treA mutant of L. monocytogenes 568 (568:ΔTreA) which, relative to the wild-type strain, displays increased tolerances to multiple stressors, including heat, high osmolarity, and desiccation. This is the first study to examine the putative trehalose operon in L. monocytogenes, and we demonstrate that lmo1254 (treA) in L. monocytogenes 568 indeed encodes a phosphotrehalase required for the hydrolysis of T6P. Disruption of the treA gene results in the accumulation of T6P which is subsequently dephosphorylated to trehalose in the cytosol, thereby contributing to the stress hardiness observed in the treA mutant. The influence of humans on ecosystem dynamics has been, and continues to be, profound. Anthropogenic effects are expected
to amplify as human populations continue to increase. Concern over these effects has given rise to a large number of studies
focusing on impacts of human activities on individual species or on biotic community structure and composition. Lacking are
studies on interactions, particularly mutualisms. Because of the role of mutualisms in ecosystem stability, such studies are
critically needed if we are to begin to better understand and predict the responses of ecosystems to anthropogenic change.
Most organisms are involved in at least one mutualism, and many in several. Mutualisms facilitate the ability of partners
to exploit particular habitats and resources, and play a large role in determining ecological boundaries. When change disrupts,
enhances, or introduces new organisms into a mutualism, the outcome and stability of the original partnership(s) is altered
as are effects of the symbiosis on the community and ecosystem as a whole. In this paper, using examples from six microbe-insect
mutualisms in forest and savanna settings, we showcase how varied and complex the responses of mutualisms can be to an equally
varied set of anthropogenic influences. We also show how alterations of mutualisms may ramify throughout affected systems.
We stress that researchers must be cognizant that many observed changes in the behaviors, abundances, and distributions of
organisms due to human activities are likely to be mediated by mutualists which may alter predictions and actual outcomes

We extend the existing work on the time-optimal control of the basic SIR epidemic model with mass action contact rate. Previous
results have focused on minimizing an objective function that is a linear combination of the cost associated with using control
and either the outbreak size or the infectious burden. We instead, provide analytic solutions for the control that minimizes
the outbreak size (or infectious burden) under the assumption that there are limited control resources. We provide optimal
control policies for an isolation only model, a vaccination only model and a combined isolation–vaccination model (or mixed
model). The optimal policies described here contain many interesting features especially when compared to previous analyses.
For example, under certain circumstances the optimal isolation only policy is not unique. Furthermore the optimal mixed policy
is not simply a combination of the optimal isolation only policy and the optimal vaccination only policy. The results presented
here also highlight a number of areas that warrant further study and emphasize that time-optimal control of the basic SIR

Neurons of the brain's biological clock located in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) generate circadian rhythms of physiology (core body temperature, hormone secretion, locomotor activity, sleep/wake, and heart rate) with distinct temporal phasing when entrained by the light/dark (LD) cycle. The neuropeptide vasoactive intestinal polypetide (VIP) and its receptor (VPAC2) are highly expressed in the SCN. Recent studies indicate that VIPergic signaling plays an essential role in the maintenance of ongoing circadian rhythmicity by synchronizing SCN cells and by maintaining rhythmicity within individual neurons. To further increase the understanding of the role of VPAC2 signaling in circadian regulation, we implanted telemetric devices and simultaneously measured core body temperature, spontaneous activity, and heart rate in a strain of VPAC2-deficient mice and compared these observations with observations made from mice examined by wheel-running activity. The study demonstrates that VPAC2 signaling is necessary for a functional circadian clock driving locomotor activity, core body temperature, and heart rate rhythmicity, since VPAC2-deficient mice lose the rhythms in all three parameters when placed under constant conditions (of either light or darkness). Furthermore, although 24-h rhythms for three parameters are retained in VPAC2-deficient mice during the LD cycle, the temperature rhythm displays markedly altered time course and profile, rising earlier and peaking ~4-6 h prior to that of wild-type mice. The use of telemetric devices to measure circadian locomotor activity, temperature, and heart rate, together with the classical determination of circadian rhythms of wheel-running activity, raises questions about how representative wheel-running activity may be of other behavioral parameters, especially when animals have altered circadian phenotype. 相似文献
