Classification of insects by echolocating greater horseshoe bats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary Echolocating greater horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) detect insects by concentrating on the characteristic amplitude- and frequency modulation pattern fluttering insects impose on the returning echoes. This study shows that horseshoe bats can also further analyse insect echoes and thus recognize and categorize the kind of insect they are echolocating.Four greater horseshoe bats were trained in a twoalternative forced-choice procedure to choose the echo of one particular insect species turning its side towards the bat (Fig. 1). The bats were able to discriminate with over 90% correct choices between the reward-positive echo and the echoes of other insect species all fluttering with exactly the same wingbeat rate (Fig. 4).When the angular orientation of the reward-positive insect was changed (Fig. 2), the bats still preferred these unknown echoes over echoes from other insect species (Fig. 5) without any further training. Because the untrained bats did not show any prey preference, this indicates that the bats were able to perform an aspect-anglein-dependent classification of insects.Finally we tested what parameters in the echo were responsible for species recognition. It turned out that the bats especially used the small echo-modulations in between glints as a source of information (Fig. 7). Neither the amplitudenor the frequencymodulation of the echoes alone was sufficient for recognition of the insect species (Fig. 8). Summary Pterostichus oblongopunctatus belongs to the type of spring breeding carabids with adult hibernation. Ovarian maturation is under the control of photoperiod: the females need a change of day length to mature. The first step of egg maturation (previtellogenesis) is bound to short day, the second step (vitellogenesis) to long day.The short day effect is achieved almost only at temperatures of 10 to 15°C; it is completely suppressed by 20°.The males mature under very different photoperiods and temperatures, but long day diminishes the percentage of mature males slightly, as well as does the higher temperature of 20°C in short day as compared with 15°C.Simulation of climatic conditions as experienced by the beetles from autumn throughout winter until spring in the laboratory showed that a short span of favourable temperatures at short day as experienced in nature in autumn allows the females to accomplish the short day development. But this maturation effect is still more diminished the longer temperatures below 5°C act on the beetles. Following that, a second period of temperatures between 10–15°C must restore the short day maturation effect if full maturity shall be gained in the following long day.The beetles are able to store reserve materials under long day at 20°C. After such a period they are able to have a normal previtellogenesis in spite of a severe shortage of food during short day. These experiments indicate that the failure in short day development outside the temperature range of 10–15°C is not a matter of an especially well balanced over-all metabolism in this favourable temperature range. Summary The mechanical implications of various types of slit arrangements found among the strain-sensitive slit sensilla in the arachnid exoskeleton (Fig. 3) were studied by measuring the deformation of model slits, cut into plastic discs, under static load applied in the plane of the disc and from varying directions (Figs. 1, 2).1. Close parallel, lyriform arrangements. Compression of slits (adequate stimulus) reaches much higher values than dilatation. It is highest with the load direction at right angle to the slit axes. Also, in the majority of slits the range of load angles resulting in compression is considerably larger than that leading to dilatation. Length distribution and lateral shift of slits in the models have a pronounced effect on slit deformability (Figs. 4-5): (a) In the oblique bar arrangement with slits of equal length and regular lateral shift (Fig. 4A) deformation of all slits is very similar at all load directions. In all slits compression results from a range of load angles larger than 120°. (b) In arrangements with a regular increase in slit length and a triangular outline shape deformability differs greatly among the slits at all load angles (Fig. 4B). (c) The slit configuration with a heartshaped outline (Fig. 4C) is peculiar for the large spread of load angles at which the compression of the different slits is highest. — These properties recommend different arrangements for the solution of different strain measuring problems, with for instance, the particular need of a wide angular working range (arrangement a), of a large spectrum of absolute sensitivities (b), or of the analysis of load direction (c).2. Angle and distance between slits. Due to the mechanical directionality inherent in an elongated slit the divergence of slit axes within a group of slits is likely to indicate the importance of the analysis of strain direction (Fig. 6). The mechanical interaction between closely neighbouring slits decreases with their distance from each other. In a parallel arrangement of equally long slits it disappears if the distance is about 1.5 times the slit length (Fig. 7).3. Aiming towards a mechanical model which would explain the complex deformation found in a lyriform organ, we consider the outline of the organ as a hole traversed by beams of material. Background  

Multiple gene expression signatures derived from microarray experiments have been published in the field of leukemia research. A comparison of these signatures with results from new experiments is useful for verification as well as for interpretation of the results obtained. Currently, the percentage of overlapping genes is frequently used to compare published gene signatures against a signature derived from a new experiment. However, it has been shown that the percentage of overlapping genes is of limited use for comparing two experiments due to the variability of gene signatures caused by different array platforms or assay-specific influencing parameters. Here, we present a robust approach for a systematic and quantitative comparison of published gene expression signatures with an exemplary query dataset.  相似文献

Bats rely heavily on acoustic signals in order to communicate with each other in a variety of social contexts. Among those, agonistic interactions and accompanying vocalizations have received comparatively little study. Here, we studied the communicational behaviour between male greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) during agonistic encounters. Two randomly paired adult males were placed in a box that allowed us to record video and sound synchronously. We describe their vocal repertoire and compare the acoustic structure of vocalizations between two aggression levels, which we quantified via the bats’ behaviour. By inspecting thirty, one-minute long encounters, we identified a rich variety of social calls that can be described as two basic call types: echolocation-like, low-frequency sweeps and long, broadband squawks. Squawks, the most common vocalization, were often noisy, i.e. exhibited a chaotic spectral structure. We further provide evidence for individual signatures and the presence of nonlinear phenomena in this species’ vocal repertoire. As the usage and acoustic structure of vocalizations is known to encode the internal state of the caller, we had predicted that the spectral structure of squawks would be affected by the caller’s aggression level. Confirming our hypothesis, we found that increased aggression positively correlated with an increase in call frequency and tonality. We hypothesize that the extreme spectral variability between and within squawks can be explained by small fluctuations in vocal control parameters (e.g. subglottal pressure) that are caused by the elevated arousal, which is in turn influenced by the aggression level.  相似文献

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the highly conserved Rho-type GTPase Cdc42 is essential for cell division and controls cellular development during mating and invasive growth. The role of Cdc42 in mating has been controversial, but a number of previous studies suggest that the GTPase controls the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascade by activating the p21-activated protein kinase (PAK) Ste20. To further explore the role of Cdc42 in pheromone-stimulated signaling, we isolated novel alleles of CDC42 that confer resistance to pheromone. We find that in CDC42(V36A) and CDC42(V36A, I182T) mutant strains, the inability to undergo pheromone-induced cell cycle arrest correlates with reduced phosphorylation of the mating MAP kinases Fus3 and Kss1 and with a decrease in mating efficiency. Furthermore, Cdc42(V36A) and Cdc42(V36A, I182T) proteins show reduced interaction with the PAK Cla4 but not with Ste20. We also show that deletion of CLA4 in a CDC42(V36A, I182T) mutant strain suppresses pheromone resistance and that overexpression of CLA4 interferes with pheromone-induced cell cycle arrest and MAP kinase phosphorylation in CDC42 wild-type strains. Our data indicate that Cla4 has the potential to act as a negative regulator of the mating pathway and that this function of the PAK might be under control of Cdc42. In conclusion, our study suggests that control of pheromone signaling by Cdc42 not only depends on Ste20 but also involves interaction of the GTPase with Cla4.  相似文献

Careful regulation of mRNA half-lives is a fundamental mechanism allowing cells to quickly respond to changing environmental conditions. The mRNA-binding Hu proteins are important for stabilization of short-lived mRNAs. Here we describe the identification and mechanistic characterization of the first low-molecular-weight inhibitors for Hu protein R (HuR) from microbial broths (Actinomyces sp.): dehydromutactin (1), MS-444 (2) and okicenone (3). These compounds interfere with HuR RNA binding, HuR trafficking, cytokine expression and T-cell activation. A mathematical and experimental analysis of the compounds' mode of action suggests that HuR homodimerizes before RNA binding and that the compounds interfere with the formation of HuR dimers. Our results demonstrate the chemical drugability of HuR; to our knowledge HuR is the first example of a drugable protein within the Hu family. MS-444, dehydromutactin and okicenone may become valuable tools for studying HuR function. An assessment of HuR inhibition as a central node in malignant processes might open up new conceptual routes toward combatting cancer.  相似文献

Thrombopoietin is the primary regulator of platelet production. We exploited two naturally occurring miniproteins of the inhibitor cystine knot family as stable and rigid scaffolds for the incorporation of peptide sequences that have been shown to act as high-affinity thrombopoietin antagonists. Several miniproteins that antagonistically block thrombopoietin-mediated receptor activation were identified using a microscale reporter assay. Covalent miniprotein dimerization yielded potent bivalent c-Mpl receptor agonists with EC(50) values in the low nanomolar or picomolar range. One selected miniprotein-derived thrombopoietin agonist was almost as active as natural thrombopoietin with regard to stimulation of megakaryocyte colony formation from human bone marrow mononuclear cells, and elicited doubling of platelet counts in mice. Our data suggest that dimeric cystine knot miniproteins have considerable potential for the future development of small and stable receptor agonists. This approach may provide a promising strategy for pharmaceutical interference with other receptors activated by ligand-induced dimerization.  相似文献
