Schiffs bases and derived secondary amines as plant growth inhibitors

Seventy-two Schiffs bases, 44 corresponding secondary amines, and 12 N-acetylated compounds were tested on their growth activity. Eighty-one compounds were active as growth inhibitors in at least one of three bioassays.     

Phosphorylation of Chromosomal Proteins in Resting and Wounded Potato Tuber Tissues

Wounding of quiescent white potato tuber tissue enhances chromatin-boundprotein phosphokinase activity, which exhibits two distinctphases during wound-healing. A moderate activation of the enzymesup to 20 hr after injury is followed by a dramatic increasein activity with a peak at 50 hr. This time-course resemblesthat of chromatinbound DNA-dependent RNA polymerase with a peakin activity at about 48 hr after wounding. The kinases phosphorylateendogenous proteins as well as added histones, phosvitin andcasein. The incorporated phosphate is stable under standardassay conditions, indicating the absence of protein phosphatases.Sensitivity of the incorporated phosphate toward trypsin andalkali, but not DNase, RNase, hydroxylamine or succinic acidpoints to seryl- and threonyl-bonds and proteins as acceptormolecules. Kinases from resting tissues are only weakly stimulatedeven by 100 mM MgCl₂, those from wounded tissues exhibit pronouncedMg^$$-optima at 5–10 mM with endogenous proteins, phosvitinand casein and 50 mM MgCl₂ with histones. Wounding also increasesthe sensitivity of the kinases toward p-hydroxymercuribenzoate. Chromatin preparations from both resting and wounded tissuescontain about 40 protein bands after polyacrylamide disc gelelectrophoresis. In vitro phosphorylation of these proteinsin chromatin from quiescent tissues is comparably low and uniform.Wounding induces changes in the protein and phosphorylationpattern with a general enhancement of phosphorylative capacityand preferential phosphorylation of low molecular weight proteins. Allogibberic acid: An inhibitor of flowering in Lemna perpusilla

Allogibberic acid (I) has been identified as the compound responsible for the inhibition of flowering, increase in frond multiplication rate and decrease in frond size produced in Lemna perpusilla 6746 by autoclaved, unbuffered aqueous solutions of gibberellic acid (VII). 13-Deoxyallogibberic acid (IV), a product of autoclaving aq. GA₇ (VIII) solutions, also inhibits flowering in L. perpusilla and is about 10 times more active than allogibberic acid.     

Voting with your feet: Payoff biased migration and the evolution of group beneficial behavior

Human migration is nonrandom. In small scale societies of the past, and in the modern world, people tend to move to wealthier, safer, and more just societies from poorer, more violent, less just societies. If immigrants are assimilated, such nonrandom migration can increase the occurrence of culturally transmitted beliefs, values, and institutions that cause societies to be attractive to immigrants. Here we describe and analyze a simple model of this process. This model suggests that long run outcomes depend on the relative strength of migration and local adaptation. When local adaption is strong enough to preserve cultural variation among groups, cultural variants that make societies attractive always predominate, but never drive alternative variants to extinction. When migration predominates, outcomes depend both on the relative attractiveness of alternative variants and on the initial sizes of societies that provide and receive immigrants.
