The effect of tetrodotoxin on the sodium gating current in the squid giant axon.

The effect of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on the sodium gating current in the squid giant axon was examined by recording the current that flowed at the pulse potential at which the ionic current fell to zero, first in the absence and then in the presence of TTX. The addition of 1 microM TTX to the bathing solution had no consistent effect on the size of the initial peak of the gating current, but resulted in small changes in the timecourse of its subsequent relaxation which were mainly caused by a reduction of about one quarter in the component that has a delayed onset and may possibly arise from changes in the state of ionization of groups in the channel wall when the lumen fills with water. Our findings suggest that the binding of TTX at the outer face of the sodium channel does not interfere with the mechanisms of activation and inactivation by the voltage sensors, but has an allosteric effect on the access of internal cations to the inside of the channel.     

Trace fossils from Lower Miocene (Ottnangian) molasse deposits of Upper Austria

Lower Miocene siliciclastic sediments of the Vöckla Schichten and Atzbacher Sande, Austria, contain a shallow-water trace-fossil assemblage of the Cruziana ichnofacies includingSkolithos isp.,Planolites ? beverleyensis, Ophiomorpha annulata, O.nodosa, Rosselia socialis, Cylindrichnus concentricus, Scolicia isp., andBichordites monastiriensis. The ichnogenusRosselia and the ichnospeciesRosselia socialis are revised. Analysis ofScolicia isp. andB. monastiriensis provides new information about their morphology and ichnotaxonomy.     

Organization of reflex sympathetic influence on rate and force of cardiac contraction]

In acute experiments on 21 cats it was proved that the change of afferent impulse on vagus nerves by means of either freeze-block or electrostimulation of their central ends results in differential reflex influences on rhythm and force of the cardiac contractions caused by sympathetic nervous system. The cut of the lower cardiac nerves may cause 'break-up' of the observed reflex, removing or inverting its ino- or chronotropy component. The given phenomenon was revealed in the experiments with high arterial pressure and with absence of tonic chronotropy influences of the left lower cardiac nerve.     

A Novel Algorithm for Identification of Activated Cryptic 5′ Splice Sites

Abstract

The resonances of the protonated carbons of [d(TAGCGCTA)]₂ have been assigned by the two-dimensional proton-detected double-quantum heteronuclear correlation experiment ([¹H-^l3C]-DQCOSY). ¹³C-coupled and ^l3C-decoupled versions of the experiment were used. The assignment method is discussed in detail. The deoxyribose cross peaks segregate into five well-resolved regions, and the base cross peaks have distinct features that are helpful for assignments. The cross peaks from the ¹H-¹³C pairs at the Cyd5, Ado2 and ThdCH₃ base positions fall in separate regions of the spectrum from each other; they also are resolved from the closely spaced Ado8, Guo8, Cyd6 and Thd6. Additional parameters for distinction of the base signals are their differing J-coupling values and long-range coupling patterns.     

Cross-sectional Area-corrected Compression Modulus of Food Gel

The linearity of the stress-strain relationship for food gel is limited to a very narrow range of the strain (usually less than 0.1 as a Cauchy measure). The reason is thought due to the change in cross-sectional area of the gel upon deformation. In this report, the cross-sectional area was approximately corrected of the compressed gel on the assumption that the gel expanded uniformly without changing its volume upon compression. In cases when the initial Young’s modulus was calculated from the thus-corrected area for some food gels, the linearity was increased for a wider range of strain.
