A light and electron microscopic study of the quadriflagellate green algaSpermatozopsis exsultans

The green flagellateSpermatozopsis exsultans Korshikov has been studied in culture by light and electron microscopy. The organism is naked, bears four flagella and is conspicuously spirally twisted. The ultrastructure and location of cell organelles (except the flagellar apparatus) has been investigated in detail using an absolute configuration analysis. With the exception of a doubling of the flagella and of the secondary cytoskeletal microtubule system,S. exsultans has the exact same complement of organelles occupying the same relative positions as has been described forS. similis. The two species are therefore correctly placed in the same genus. The usefulness of absolute orientations of cell organelles for green algal taxonomy and phylogeny is stressed.Dedicated to Prof.M. Genome relationship betweenPsathyrostachys huashanica andP. fragilis (Poaceae)

Hybrids between the Chinese endemic speciesPsathyrostachys huashanica Keng and the SW. Asian speciesP. fragilis (Boiss.)Nevski (all 2n = 14) developed normally but were completely sterile. Meiotic analyses revealed a high chiasma frequency indicating that the two species as well asP. juncea (Fisch.)Nevski share the same basic genome (called N). The hybrid nature of the plants was established through karyotype analysis and Giemsa C-banding.     

Evolution of the secondary haustoria to a primary haustorium in the parasiticScrophulariaceae/Orobanchaceae

In the parasiticScrophulariaceae andOrobanchaceae, two types of contact organs exist: secondary and primary haustoria. Secondary haustoria are lateral organs, developing in large numbers and only when the seedling is fully established. In contrast, a primary haustorium represents the first developmental stage of the seedling itself. In the root system of the parasiticLesquereuxia syriaca (=Siphonostegia syriaca) there are only secondary haustoria, but a few of them apparently develop in a terminal position. This is achieved by transferring the haustorial initiation region closer to the root apex. One can interpret this as a transformation of the apical meristem into a meristematic haustorial tissue. On the condition that an extreme shortening (abbrevation) of the primary root could happen, we discuss the transformation of the terminal secondary into a primary haustorium.     

On the carrying behaviour of basic South American primates

InCallithrix, Saguinus, Aotus, andCallicebus other group members than the mother participate in infant care. Differences among these species are obvious in respect to the time of being off any caregiver, and in respect to the carrying position (Aotus andCallicebus). Alloparental care, a basic behaviour pattern in these species, has evolved from the parking behaviour of the prosimians. The infants are «parked» at other group members.     

Synthesis of methyl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-3-O-(β-d-galactopyranosyl)-α-d-galactopyranoside from a corresponding thioglycoside derivative

The title disaccharide glycoside was synthesized by halide ion-promoted glycosidation, using methanol and the disaccharide bromide derived from methyl 2-azido-3-O-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzoyl--d-galactopyranosyl)-4,6-O-benzylidene-2-deoxy-1-thio--d-galactopyranoside. This derivative in turn was prepared by silver triflate-promoted condensation of monosaccharide derivatives.     

Arterial supply of the choriocapillaris of anuran amphibians (Rana temporaria,Rana esculenta)

Summary The pattern of the vascular supply to the choroid of the frog eye was studied in toto with the use of the injection-replication-SEM technique. The choroid of anuran amphibians is composed mainly of the choriocapillaris. In both species studied (Rana temporaria, Rana esculenta), an independent arterial supply to the choriocapillaris supplemented that from the ciliary arteries. This additional vascular route arises from the optic artery, a separate branch of the arteria infundibularis superficialis. The optic artery, accompanied by its vein within the vascular sheath of the optic nerve, joins the rich arterial capillary network of the choriocapillaris and supplies the posterior pole of the ocular bulb. The superficial capillary network displays a dense collar around the entrance of the optic nerve into the eye and is composed of a circular meshwork of small capillaries, several layers deep. More peripherally, however, it becomes single layered. This capillary network, as a whole, establishes numerous connections with the adjacent choriocapillaris at the posterior pole of the ocular bulb. In anuran amphibians the complex arrangement of both arterial systems supporting the choriocapillaris may be regarded as a more complete equivalent of the short posterior ciliary arteries of mammals.     

The superficial vascular hyaloid system in the eye of the frogs,Rana temporaria and Rana esculenta

Summary The angioarchitecture of the superficial vascular hyaloid system (membrana vasculosa retinae) of the frog eye was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. The terminal vessels form a single-layered sheath intimately adjacent to the vitreal side of the avascular retina. The hyaloid system is subdivided by the ventral venous trunk into three central areas: the dorsal, the temporo-ventral, and the naso-ventral area. Toward the ora serrata, the hyaloid system is bordered by an arterial ring, and by nasal and temporal venous branches forming more or less complete hemicircles. A vascular zone composed of several tongue-like sectors establishes an inter-connection between the peripheral vascular rings and the central areas of the fundus. The arterial blood is supplied from the arterial ring. The drainage of the hyaloid system is provided via two routes: (1) the Y-shaped ventral trunk collects blood from the central areas, (2) the two peripheral venous branches drain the tongue-like sectors. The vessels within the dorsal area follow preferentially a dorso-ventral meridional direction. This densely capillarized territory corresponds in localization to the area centralis retinae. The ultrastructure of microvessels of the hyaloid system is characterized by features typical for capillaries of the central nervous system.     

Testing the “methanochondrion concept”: are nucleotides transported across internal membranes in Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum?

In order to test the Methanochondrion concept, uptake of adenine nucleotides in various membrane preparations of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum was studied. The uptake showed properties which are in general interpreted as indicative of a transport mechanism: (i) kinetics in the time range of minutes, (ii) temperature dependence, (iii) substrate specificity and (iv) failure to remove the substrate by extensive washing.However, nucleotide transport as an interpretation of this uptake can definitely be excluded. Not only an exchange mechanism of the mitochondrial type, but also a general exchange or an uniport mechanism was ruled out. In contrast, the nucleotide uptake was shown to be actually a tight and specific binding of ADP and ATP to binding sites at the interior side of the cell membrane. This was conclusively demonstrated in protoplasts obtained from M. thermoautotrophicum cells. In these protoplasts which do not contain internal membranes also nucleotide binding was observed, but only after disruption of the plasma membrane by osmotic lysis, which leads to the exposure of binding sites.     

Influence of α-interferon therapy on blood lymphoid cells

Summary The influence of natural -interferon (-IFN) therapy (3×10⁶ units i.m. daily) on blood lymphoid cells was studied in 20 patients with gynecological neoplasias (7 patients with condylomata accuminata and 13 patients with ovarian carcinoma). There was a statistically significant increase in the intracellular levels of 2'–5'oligoadenylate synthese 1 day after the first injection of IFN and with few exceptions this activity remained increased during 3 months of treatment. In most of the patients, the capacity of blood lymphoid cells to produce IgA, IgG, and IgM following stimulation with pokeweed mitogen was decreased 1 day after the first injection of IFN and with few exceptions it remained low during 6 months of IFN therapy. In most patients there was a decrease in the capacity of lymphoid cells to act as stimulator or responder cells in a mixed lymphocyte culture during IFN therapy. The -IFN therapy had no major influence on the response of lymphoid cells to mitogens. We conclude, that neither this nor our previous studies on the influence of IFN therapy on immunological functions have given support to the hypothesis that the antitumor action of IFN is mediated by the immune system.
