Some measures of information arising in statistical games

This paper discusses some measures of information which naturally arise in the context of statistical games (games against nature). Some useful inequalities are proven relating the entropy to the value of information provided by experiments. Two other measures, based on the notion of a metric as informational distance and that of a diameter value are also discussed.     

In vitro incorporation of 2′-deoxyadenosine and 3′-deoxyadenosine into yeast tRNAPhe using tRNA nucleotidyl transferase,and properties of tRNAPhe-C-C-2′dA and tRNAPhe-C-C-3′dA

2′-Deoxyadenosine and 3′-deoxyadenosine (cordycepin) can be incorporated into the 3′-terminal position of tRNA^Phe by tRNA nucleotidyl transferase. tRNA^Phe-C-C-2′dA and tRNA^Phe-C-C-3′dA, missing the cis-diol group at the 3′-terminal end are resistant to periodate oxidation and are not able to form borate complexes. In aminoacylation experiments only the tRNA^Phe-C-C-3′dA proved to be chargeable.     

Electron microscopy of crystalline micelles in cellulose elementary fibrils of Dictyostelium discoideum

Summary In negatively stained preparations the cellulose of Dictyostelium discoideum appears in the form of 35 Å wide fibrils of undetermined length. Upon mild acid hydrolysis a periodic pattern may be observed along the fibrils, in the form of fine, electron-dense bands across the full diameter of the fibril spaced apart from each other by electron-transparent segments approximately 100 Å long. We propose that the electron-transparent segments represent the crystalline micelles of the elementary cellulose fibril, whereas the electron-opaque bands represent the amorphous regions.Part of a thesis submitted by the senior author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree, University of Hawaii.     

Zwei neue Heterokonten (Pleurochloris polyphem undHeterococcus clavatus) aus Böden der alpinen Stufe des Mt. Kenya

Zusammenfassung Aus Bodenproben der alpinen Stufe des Mt. Kenya werden zwei neue Heterokonten beschrieben. Pleurochloris polyphem unterscheidet sich vonPleurochloris magna durch auffallend große, spindelförmige Zoosporen, deren Stigma außerhalb des Chromatophors im Zytoplasma liegt und aus einem Aggregat von Karotinoidkristallen besteht. Heterococcus Clavatus besitzt gegenüberH. vesiculosus stark verlängerte, keulenförmige Endzellen mit nur 8–10 Chromatophoren.Herrn Professor Dr.Lothar Geitler zum 70. Geburtstag gewidmet.     

Mutant of Escherichia coli with Anomalous Cell Division and Ability to Decrease Episomally and Chromosomally Mediated Resistance to Ampicillin and Several Other Antibiotics

In a mutation experiment with a rough, ampicillin-resistant strain, we isolated two smooth mutants which were both sensitive to ampicillin and carried defects in the cell envelope. One of the strains (with the envA gene) is hindered in its completion of septa and forms chains of cells. The envA gene has been mapped to a position between leu and proB, at 2 to 4 min. The envA gene decreased the resistance mediated by both episomal and chromosomal genes for resistance to several antibiotics. During growth the envA mutant was characterized by abnormal ratios between viable count or cell count and optical density. The ratio between viable count and optical density was affected during shift-up and shift-down experiments. When compared to the parent strain, the envA mutant was found to be more resistant to ultraviolet irradiation on plates. Prestarvation for tryptophan had a protective effect against irradiation both on the parent strain and the envA mutant.     

Über die Pseudopodien von Megakaryocyten und ihre Bedeutung für die Freisetzung von Thrombocyten

Zusammenfassung Im Knochenmark der Ratte werden große runde Megakaryocyten und Megakaryocyten mit zahlreichen Pseudopodien gefunden. Die prospektiven Plättchenfelder liegen in der Mitte der Pseudopodien und sind von der hyalinen Zone des Ektoplasmas umgeben. An der Spitze der Pseudopodien ist die hyaline Zone verbreitert. Die Pseudopodien ragen in Sinusoide und Kapillaren, werden aber auch extravasal gefunden. Gelegentlich läßt sich eine Kontinuität zwischen der Membran der Demarkationsbläschen und der Pseudopodienmembran beobachten. Eine intravasale Freisetzung von Thrombocyten aus Pseudopodien ist sehr wahrscheinlich.

Pseudopodia of megakaryocytes and liberation of blood platelets

Summary In the bone marrow of rats large round megakaryocytes and megakaryocytes with numerous pseudopodia are to be found. The prospective fields of platelets are located in the central part of the pseudopodia. These fields are surrounded by the hyalin zone of ectoplasm. At the tip of a pseudopodium this zone is enlarged. Pseudopodia protrude into sinusoids and capillaries, but occur also extravasally. Continuity between the membrane of the vesicles for the demarcation of platelets and the cell membrane is occasionally observed. The intravasal liberation of thrombocytes from pseudopodia seems very likely.

Quantum Requirement for Photosynthesis in Chlorophyll-Deficient Plants with Unusual Lamellar Structures

Neither an over-all deficiency of chlorophyll, nor an increased enzymatic capacity for maximal rates, nor an unusual lamellar structure was found to change the number of quanta required for the evolution of one molecule of oxygen in healthy aurea mutants of tobacco. The average minimal quantum number remains 10 (efficiency 0.1) as in many algae and typical higher plants. Most of the time the optimal efficiency depends on the availability of some far-red radiation, particularly in the blue region of the spectrum where blue light alone is rather inefficient. These results fit an explanation offered earlier in connection with the hydrogen or acetate photometabolism of algae in far-red light.
