Growth in common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) was investigated through examination of sex‐specific, ontogenetic changes in the mass of 38 discrete body compartments, utilizing stranded dolphins in good body condition (n = 145). Ontogenetic allometry and the body composition technique were used to quantitatively describe growth patterns. Although adult males were significantly larger than adult females in total body mass (TBM) and total length, overall patterns of growth were remarkably similar between sexes. The integument, locomotor muscle, and vertebral column together represented 50%–58% of TBM across all life history categories, although their relative contributions varied ontogenetically. Young dolphins invested the greatest percentage of TBM in integument, while locomotor muscle was the single largest body component in adults. In both sexes (1) most muscle groups displayed positive allometry, (2) most skeletal elements displayed negative allometric or isometric growth, (3) most abdominal viscera associated with digestion displayed positive allometry, and (4) the brain displayed negative allometric growth. Reproductive tissues exhibited the highest rates of growth in both sexes, and increased as a percentage of TBM with maturity. This study provides an integrated view of bottlenose dolphin growth and a quantitative baseline of body composition for future monitoring of this sentinel species of ecosystem health. 相似文献

Nestling Hen Harriers Circus cyaneus in Orkney were weighed and measured during two nesting seasons. The 501 weights and 390 longest primary measurements produce a composite record of growth for this species. The general shape of both weight and primary growth curves is sigmoid. The primary feather growth can be measured at age seven and eight days after hatching and is less variable as an index of growth than is weight. The nestling period varies usually from 30 to 36 days, and age at first flight depends on the ratio of primary length to weight. Males usually fly before their heavier female siblings. The asynchronous hatching produces a size-rank between nestling Hen Harriers. The significance of the size-rank to growth and mortality is discussed. Sexual dimorphism develops at the nestling stage. Weights and measurements of males and females at different ages are tabulated. Asynchronous hatching, and the influence of latitude differences on growth rate are briefly discussed. 相似文献

Free mRNPs isolated from human term placental tissue were examined for protein kinase and phosphoprotein-phosphatase activities. Free mRNPs incubated with [-32P]ATP in a protein kinase standard buffer show self-phosphorylation in the absence of exogenous substrates. Treatment of phosphorylated products with alkali showed a significant phosphorylation of tyrosine residues within the mRNP-proteins. An alkaline-phosphatase activity was found to be tightly associated with the mRNPs. Both heat stable and heat labile alkaline phosphatase activities were found in the mRNPs. Heat labile alkaline phosphatase is the major isoenzyme form of the mRNPs. The existence of both protein kinase(s) and alkaline phosphatase activities in placental free cytoplasmic mRNPs might suggest that a balance between phosphorylation, specifically on tyrosine residues, and dephosphorylation states of some of the mRNP-proteins is relevant for their physiological functions, and may therefore play a role in the regulation of mRNPs' metabolism and, consequently, in mRNA translation. 相似文献

Eggs of Xenopus laevis were exposed to ultraviolet (uv) radiation (2537 Å) on the vegetal hemisphere soon after fertilization at doses sufficient to impair greatly the subsequent development of dorsal structures. It was found that temporary orientation of irradiated eggs 90° off the natural vertical axis rescues these eggs, allowing them to develop into normal embryos. Complete rescue results when oblique orientation is initiated well before first cleavage, and eggs remain in this position until the 16-cell stage. Significant rescue is seen, however, in eggs which remain off axis for shorter periods of time or when eggs are obliquely oriented, even after first cleavage. Furthermore, a period of oblique orientation prior to uv irradiation results in insensitivity of eggs to irradiation. Ultraviolet irradiation is found to randomize the position of the dorsal side with respect to the sperm entrance point, whereas the position of the dorsal side of rescued embryos is strongly specified by the orientation of the egg during the rescue period, and not by the sperm entrance point. Other effects of uv irradiation on early development include decreased pigmentation differences among 4-cell stage blastomeres and delayed gastrulation. It is proposed (1) that oblique orientation promotes in irradiated eggs a set of internal rearrangements mimicking those normally accomplished by the unirradiated egg in a period prior to first cleavage and as part of an early dorsalization process, and (2) that the uv-sensitive targets are part of the morphogenic machinery used by the egg for internal rearrangements in this period and are not elements of a system of transmitted particulate dorsal determinants. 相似文献

1) A new method of enrichment of the linkage-region in corneal proteokeratan sulfate is described, which consists of desulfation of peptidokeratan sulfate, followed by chromatography on Con A-Sepharose 4B and enzymatic degradation with beta-D galactosidase and beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase. 2) After permethylation, hydrolysis, reduction with sodium borohydrid and acetylation gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses were performed. 1. beta-Ionone vapour has been shown to cause an increase in the more saturated carotenes and a decrease in the less saturated carotenes of Rhodotorula glutinis. Lycopersene (dihydrophytoene) has been proposed as a precursor to phytoene. Attempts were made to isolate lycopersene from beta-ionone-treated cultures of R. glutinis. 2. Large samples of beta-ionone-treated cultures were examined for the presence of lycopersene. Spots were detected on silicic acid plates that could not be differentiated from synthetic lycopersene on the basis of column and thin-layer chromatographic separations and staining techniques. The lycopersene-like substance could be obtained from non-treated pigmented yeast as well as baker's yeast. 3. An extraction of bacterial-grade yeast extract also yielded a lycopersene-like substance. The extracts of R. glutinis cells cultured on media not containing yeast extract did not contain the lycopersene-like compound. 4. No significant carbon was incorporated into the lycopersene zone from (14)C-labelled mevalonate, acetate and glucose by R. glutinis and baker's yeast. 5. These results indicate that compounds may exist with chromatographic properties similar to lycopersene, but that lycopersene could not be detected in either a pigmented or a non-pigmented yeast. 相似文献
