We characterized the surface antigen and mRNA expression for the CD11c (alpha X, p150) subunit of the human leukocyte adherence receptor family during hematopoietic cell differentiation. The CD11c subunit antigen and mRNA are constitutively expressed in undifferentiated HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells, and levels increase markedly with differentiation along the monocyte/macrophage pathway using phorbol myristate acetate. Human monocyte-derived macrophages and human alveolar macrophages express elevated levels of the CD11c subunit antigen and mRNA, indicating that the changes observed in vitro are present in vivo. Dot blot analysis of immature and mature lymphoid and myeloid cells and cell lines demonstrate equivalent levels of CD11c mRNA expression. We conclude that CD11c gene expression is selectively increased during hematopoietic cell differentiation along the monocyte/macrophage pathway.  相似文献

Helicopters can be used to collect water samples from many lakes over a wide geographic area within a relatively short time period. Here we report the results from an experiment in which sequential water samples from a lake were collected first from a nonmotorized boat and then immediately afterward from a helicopter. No significant differences were found between the means of the measurement of 20 chemical parameters for the two methods of collection. When compared to obtaining samples from a boat, collection of samples from a helicopter platform had no effect on the content of the water samples.  相似文献

The human metallothionein gene complex on chromosome 16 has been remapped to 16q13 using high-resolution in situ hybridization. The complex is not disrupted by the rearrangement breakpoint on the long arm of chromosome 16 in patients with myelomonocytic leukemia with abnormal eosinophils, as had been previously reported. Using information theory, courtship posturing in the moths Ephestia elutella(Hübner) and Cadra figulilella(Gregson) was analyzed for information transmission, which was partitioned into autocovariability (intraindividual transmission) and cross-covariability (interindividual transmission). This two-factor analysis was sufficient to account for more than 60% of the behavioral variance in males of E. elutellaand in both sexes of C. figulilelladuring intraspecific courtships; however, there were large residual variances in the behavior of male and female C. figulilelladuring interspecific courtships and in E. elutellafemales during both inter- and intraspecific courtships. In E. elutella,significant levels of transmission were attributable to both inter- and intraindividual effects, whereas in C. figulilella,only autocovariability was high and no interindividual communication could be assigned to courtship postures. Although courtship in these two species was qualitatively very similar and males readily courted nonconspecific females, high levels of reproductive isolation resulted from courtship. Male C. figulilellahad 94% fewer copulations with E. elutellafemales than with conspecific females and E. elutellamales had 78% fewer copulations with C. figulilellafemales than with conspecifics. These reductions were due to a differential response in both females and males, causing inter-specific courtships to be terminated much earlier than intraspecific courtships. This discrimination indicates that interindividual communication was indeed occurring during courtship and was only partially measured by analysis of postures. Thus, communication took place largely in some other modality, most likely the chemical modality, where species specificity is suggested for both male and female pheromones.  相似文献

Vitellogenin, an ancient animal protein, is the major yolk protein of eggs, where it is used as a food source during embryogenesis. Here it is shown that vitellogenins, including those from the invertebrates Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster, contain domains that are homologous with parts of apolipoprotein B-100 (apoB-100) of human low-density lipoprotein and human lipoprotein lipase. As vitellogenins are likely to have been used by invertebrates during embryogenesis well before the circulation of lipids appeared in vertebrates, it is suggested that copies of a precursor gene, serving a function similar to vitellogenin, were modified to code for part of apoB-100 and lipoprotein lipase in vertebrates. In addition to providing a link between invertebrates and vertebrates for proteins involved in lipid transport, these homologies suggest new functions for vitellogenin other than being a yolk food for the developing embryo.  相似文献

Summary Eels were adapted to black- or white-coloured backgrounds and the pituitary glands were prepared for light and electron microscopy. Immunocytochemical staining was used to study the distribution of the neurohypophysial melanin-concentrating hormone in the neurointermediate lobe. The hormone was located in small, elliptical, electron-opaque neurosecretory granules, measuring approximately 120×90 nm. The neurones terminated on blood vessels in the centre of the neurohypophysis and on the basement membrane separating neural and intermediate lobe tissues. The results of both light and electron immunocytochemistry and of radioimmunoassay are consistent with a higher rate of hormone release from eels adapted to white backgrounds than from those adapted to black backgrounds. In addition to this, when fish that had been adapted to white tanks were transferred to black tanks, there was an accumulation of irMCH in the gland and an increased numerical density of secretory granules at nerve terminals. These results reinforce the proposal that MCH is released during adaptation to a white background, to cause melanin concentration and to inhibit MSH release, and that its release is halted in black-adapted fish.  相似文献
