The largest specimen of the four‐winged dromaeosaurid dinosaur Microraptor gui includes preserved gut contents. Previous reports of gut contents and considerations of functional morphology have indicated that Microraptor hunted in an arboreal environment. The new specimen demonstrates that this was not strictly the case, and offers unique insights into the ecology of nonavian dinosaurs early in the evolution of flight. The preserved gut contents are composed of teleost fish remains. Several morphological adaptations of Microraptor are identified as consistent with a partially piscivorous diet, including dentition with reduced serrations and forward projecting teeth on the anterior of the dentary. The feeding habits of Microraptor can now be understood better than that of any other carnivorous nonavian dinosaur, and Microraptor appears to have been an opportunistic and generalist feeder, able to exploit the most common prey in both the arboreal and aquatic microhabitats of the Early Cretaceous Jehol ecosystem. 相似文献
Anterior Gradient 2 (AGR2), an ER stress-inducible protein, has been reported to be localized in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and its level is elevated in numerous metastatic cancers. Recently, it has been demonstrated that AGR2 is involved in the control of ER homeostasis. However, the molecular mechanism how AGR2 regulates ER stress response remains unclear. Herein we show that AGR2 homo-dimerizes through an intermolecular disulfide bond. Moreover, dimerization of AGR2 attenuates ER stress-induced cell death through the association with BiP/GRP78. Thus, these results suggest that dimerization of AGR2 is crucial in mediating the ER stress signaling pathway. 相似文献
Acoustic and geolocating archival tags were deployed on steelhead kelts to study their post-spawning migrations, diving behavior and thermal habitat. Fourteen reconditioned steelhead kelts were surgically implanted with LAT2510 archival and V7-2 L acoustic tags, and released from Coleman National Fish Hatchery. An array of acoustic receivers in the Sacramento River and Delta, and the San Francisco Bay estuary detected the downstream movement of the steelhead. Two steelhead kelts (J and M) with archival tags were recovered at the hatchery after 219 and 285 days at liberty respectively. Based on changes in geolocations, vertical movements, and water temperatures, the migrations of steelhead J and M were divided into five and six phases respectively. Steelhead J moved into coastal California waters while steelhead M remained in freshwater for the majority of its time at liberty. Large increases in temperature and opacity were recorded before and after the ocean phases, likely as the steelhead moved through the Sacramento Delta. Both steelhead kelts remained relatively close to the surface throughout their migration but there were diurnal differences in the vertical movements. In freshwater, the steelhead tended to be deeper during the day (e.g., steelhead J: 3.08?±?1.50 vs 1.65?±?1.15 m, day vs night) but in the ocean, the steelhead were typically deeper during the night (1.32?±?1.61 vs 5.63?±?6.11 m). Both steelhead kelts appeared to be less oceanic than a previous study in Scott Creek, a small coastal stream approximately 100 km south of the mouth of San Francisco Bay. Although this study has a small sample size, the results suggest that steelhead kelts from a large river and estuary system, like the Sacramento River, may be relatively less oceanic than steelhead kelts from small coastal streams. 相似文献
Capsule: Herring Gull Larus argentatus colonies located along coastlines that are relatively sheltered from wave impact, associated with high intertidal prey availability, and with extensive farmland habitat in the vicinity, have increased in size over the last three decades.
Aims: To investigate potential habitat drivers, associated with local food availability, of variation in Herring Gull colony sizes.
Methods: Colony sizes were compared for 68 Herring Gull colonies across southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland to relate to the availability of potential foraging habitats surrounding each colony.
Results: Changes in Herring Gull colony sizes were spatially clustered, with between-colony differences in colony size related to coastline exposure and amount of farmland within the foraging range. At the end of the census period, colonies located in areas with the greatest availability of intertidal prey and farmland habitat were larger compared to those that were not.
Conclusion: Spatially clustered variation in changes of the size of Herring Gull colonies indicates that neighbouring colonies experienced similar environmental conditions and highlights the importance of intertidal and farmland habitats in buffering against declines. This result emphasizes the need for area-specific management for this species of conservation concern. 相似文献
This study was conducted using scanning electron microscopy to characterize morphological changes in the maturing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) coleorhiza and emerging radicle during continuous hydration or hydration interrupted by dehydration. With continuous hydration, coleorhizae emerged and cell expansion led to a progressive increase in tissue size. Coleorhiza cells developed extensions like epidermal root hairs. Although coleorhiza cells appeared undamaged by radicle emergence, they began deteriorating when the radicle had reached a length of approximately 2 mm. In response to dehydration, coleorhiza cells shrank but did not rupture. If dehydration was initiated during an early stage of coleorhiza development, greater tissue shrinkage occurred at -150 MPa than at -4 MPa; otherwise, coleorhizae showed no differential response due to dehydration water potential. Upon rehydration, coleorhizae dehydrated at -4 MPa regained cell turgor within 24 hr, while coleorhizae dehydrated at -150 MPa did not. Loss of the coleorhiza (due to desiccation) did not preclude radicle emergence, which occurred upon rehydration. Radicles up to 2 mm in length were more tolerant of dehydration than were coleorhizae. These results suggest that the coleorhiza may be an expendable tissue during germination, as its likely protective and absorptive roles are lost following a single harsh dehydration event. 相似文献
Abstract: Mice infected with the retrovirus mixture designated LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus (MuLV) develop an immunosuppressive disease. Quinolinic acid (QUIN) is an endogenous neurotoxic N -methyl- d -aspartate agonist that may contribute to the pathogenesis of HIV-associated neurologic disease. In the present study, the levels of QUIN in brain and blood were measured in mice infected with LP-BM5 MuLV and compared with those in uninfected mice and mice infected with the nonpathogenic strain of ecotropic MuLV (helper component of LP-BM5 MuLV). Infection with LP-BM5 MuLV resulted in progressive increases in blood QUIN levels beginning 2 weeks after inoculation that peaked by 16 weeks postinfection. QUIN levels were also increased in cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and striatum. In systemic tissues, QUIN levels were increased in lung, liver, and spleen. In contrast, infection with the ecotropic viral component of the LP-BM5 MuLV mixture was not associated with any changes in brain, blood, or systemic tissue QUIN levels, even though helper virus burdens were comparable to those in mice infected with LP-BM5 MuLV. Treatment of LP-BM5 MuLV-infected mice with the antiretroviral agent zidovudine (azidothymidine) significantly reduced blood and brain QUIN levels in association with reductions in viral load in brain and spleen. These observations suggest that elevated QUIN production is not attributable to productive infection with retrovirus per se but occurs in response to an agent or agents, such as cytokines, that are produced by the host in response to virus infection. 相似文献
Thapsigargin (3) is a potent inhibitor of the SERCA-pump protein, with potential for application in a variety of medicinal areas. The efficient and scalable syntheses of thapsigargin (3) and nortrilobolide (2) have been disclosed previously. To demonstrate the modularity of the previous routes, three natural products (compounds 6, 13, 15) and four analogs (compounds 17–20) have been divergently prepared from a common building block featuring varied acyl chains at the C2, C3, and C8 positions. Physiologic loading of the intervertebral disc may lead to changes in the osmotic pressure experienced by the resident cells. In this study, changes in gene expression levels for extracellular matrix and cytoskeletal proteins were quantified in disc cells subjected to hypo-osmotic (255 mOsm) or hyper-osmotic conditions (450 mOsm), relative to iso-osmotic conditions (293 mOsm). Important differences were observed in osmolarity and between cells of different regions, corresponding to the transition zone and nucleus pulposus. Under hypo-osmotic conditions, gene expressions for aggrecan and type II collagen were up-regulated in the transition zone, but not in the nucleus pulposus cells. Genes for the small proteoglycans, biglycan, and decorin, but not lumican, were up-regulated in transition zone cells following incubation in either hypo- or hyper-osmotic media. The same genes were down-regulated in nucleus pulposus cells under either hypo- or hyper-osmotic conditions. Differences in the response to altered osmolarity between cells of the intervertebral disc may relate to their different cytoskeletal structures or embryological origins. 相似文献
Candida albicans is a prevalent fungal pathogen amongst the immunocompromised population, causing both superficial and life-threatening infections. Since C. albicans is diploid, classical transmission genetics can not be performed to study specific aspects of its biology and pathogenesis. Here, we exploit the diploid status of C. albicans by constructing a library of 2,868 heterozygous deletion mutants and screening this collection using 35 known or novel compounds to survey chemically induced haploinsufficiency in the pathogen. In this reverse genetic assay termed the fitness test, genes related to the mechanism of action of the probe compounds are clearly identified, supporting their functional roles and genetic interactions. In this report, chemical-genetic relationships are provided for multiple FDA-approved antifungal drugs (fluconazole, voriconazole, caspofungin, 5-fluorocytosine, and amphotericin B) as well as additional compounds targeting ergosterol, fatty acid and sphingolipid biosynthesis, microtubules, actin, secretion, rRNA processing, translation, glycosylation, and protein folding mechanisms. We also demonstrate how chemically induced haploinsufficiency profiles can be used to identify the mechanism of action of novel antifungal agents, thereby illustrating the potential utility of this approach to antifungal drug discovery. 相似文献
When first presented with live crab prey, naive cuttlefish typically approached from the front and were often pinched. In subsequent trials, this initial group rapidly improved their prey capture techniques and attacked from above or behind the crab. Naive cuttlefish that first watched experienced conspecifics prey on crabs captured crabs without getting pinched. However, naive cuttlefish that first watched non-attacking cuttlefish in the same tank with crabs also avoided pinches, as did naive cuttlefish that were exposed only to crab odor. All three experimental groups were as successful on their first predation as the initial group was on its second predation, but the attack techniques they used were not as well developed as those of the initial group on their fifth trial. Results suggest that odor may serve as a primer for cuttlefish predatory attack behavior, perhaps by enhancing food arousal and improving attention. Practice was required for further improvements in predation techniques. We found no evidence that cuttlefish improved their predation techniques by observing conspecifics. 相似文献
