Repression of ant synthesis early in the lytic cycle of phage P22

Summary Using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to study the early expression of P22 genes we show that early expression of the ant-gene (imm I region) is turned off after 6–8 min, independent of the late acting mnt-repressor. A semi-clear mutant called cir5 is defective for this early ant turn-off. The mutation cir5 maps in the imm I region of P22 between genes mnt and ant. P22 cir5 mutants are defective for a repressor which acts in trans to regulate early ant synthesis. There appears to be no absolute requirement of the cir5 allele for the establishment of lysogeny. The overproduction of ant in the P22 cir5 mutant leads to a marked increase in abortive infections, killing the infected cells. The cir5-phenotype can be suppressed by an ant ^- mutation.     

The relationship between the size of mitochondria and the intensity of light that they scatter in different energetic states

The intensity of light scattered at 90° to the incident beam and the effective hydrodynamic radii of mitochondria incubated under a variety of conditions have been measured. Addition of high concentrations of uncouplers to respiring mitochondria resulted in a decrease in scatter which was not due to swelling. Addition of valinomycin to mitochondria depleted of substrate in K⁺-free medium produced an increase in scatter that was not due to shrinking. It is concluded that changes in the intensity of scattered light are not reliable indices of changes of volume of mitochondria, and that changes in conformation with changes in metabolic state dominate changes in light scatter. A molecular mechanism for the effect of metabolic state upon the scattered intensity is suggested.     

Identification of Ly 5 on the surface of ‘natural killer’ cells in normal and athymic inbred mouse strains

This report that (1) cells mediating NK activity in different inbred mouse strains selectively express one of two allelic products specified by theLy-5 locus (or a locus tightly linked to it) and (2) this surface structure may directly contribute to NK-mediated cytolysis, since Ly 5 antiserum specifically inhibits NK activity in vitro in the absence of complement.     

Argon Laser Management of Cutaneous Vascular Deformities: A Preliminary Report

Twenty-two patients with cutaneous vascular malformations were treated with an argon laser. Promising results were obtained in patients with port-wine stains, hemangiomas, telangiectasia and varicose veins. The argon laser shows promise as an effective clinical tool in the treatment of all such cutaneous vascular abnormalities. However, further study of clinical as well as laboratory data is necessary over a long period of time before this modality can be definitely recommended as the treatment of choice for vascular deformities of the skin.     

Recovery of Yersinia enterocolitica from streams and lakes of California.

Stream and lake water from the Mammoth Lakes region of California was sampled for Yersinia enterocolitica. From 10 of the 34 sites examined, organisms were isolated that were biochemically identified as Y. enterocolitica. Only one of the ten strains could be serologically confirmed. This strain was identified as Y. enterocolitica serotype 16. Although an outbreak of enteritis in the area prompted this study, no correlation with gastrointestinal disease could be established since the majority of the strains were untypeable.
