The proliferation of Schwann cells (the myelinating cells ofthe peripheral nervous system) is stimulated by the contactwith axonal membranes. It is suggested that the endogenous carbohydrate-bindingprotein (lectin) cerebellar soluble lectin (CSL) bound to ligandsat the surface of axonal preparations is mitogenic for Schwanncells. Both autocrine and axon-stimulated Schwann cell proliferationsseem to be dependent on the presence of CSL and its ligandsat the Schwann cell surface, as suggested by the effects ofN-glycosylation inhibitors and anti-CSL Fab fragments. We examined annual variation in the timing of conception andparturition in the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and thesynchrony of birth timing with resource cues, using 8 yearsof monthly birth, rainfall, and vegetation data, measured asNormalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Monthly birthshad the strongest significant correlations with NDVI and rainfalllevels 12 and 13 months in the past, respectively. In addition,the synchrony of current year births corresponds most stronglyto the synchrony of the previous year's NDVI distribution. Becausethe gestation period of buffalo has been estimated to be around11 months, these findings suggest that improved protein levels,occurring approximately a month after the first green flushof the wet season, are either a trigger for conception or conceptionhas evolved to be synchronous with correlated environmentalcues that ensure females enter a period of peak body conditionaround the time of conception and/or parturition. With a gestationperiod of approximately 340 days, parturition occurs to takeadvantage of the period when forage has its highest proteincontent. A comparative analysis of gestation periods withinthe subfamily Bovinae indicates that African buffalo have aprotracted gestation for their body size, which we suggest isan adaptation to their seasonal environment. We also found thatinterannual variation in the birth distribution suggests a degreeof plasticity in the date of conception, and variation in thenumber of calves born each year suggest further synchrony ata timescale longer than a single year.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructural and cytochemical features of peritoneal mast cells of the rat were studied. Immature mast cells show specific cytoplasmic granules of different sizes, the smaller ones localized in the Golgi region. The rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus are well developed, and mitochondria are numerous. Nuclei show deep indentations. Acid phosphatase is present in the Golgi saccules, in GERL (Golgi apparatus-endoplasmic reticulumlysosome) and in some small granules. It is not present in mature granules. Trimetaphosphatase is present in the Golgi saccules, in GERL, in most immature granules and in some mature granules. These enzymes appear to be transported and packaged into granules by the Golgi apparatus, suggesting that the specific mast cell granules may be a form of lysosome. The results of this study are consistent with the hypothesis that peritoneal mast cells may be derived from macrophage-like precursors.  相似文献

This European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) Policy Statement outlines the way in which a Safety Management System can be developed for MRI units. The Policy Statement can help eliminate or at least minimize accidents or incidents in the magnetic resonance environment and is recommended as a step towards harmonisation of safety of workers, patients, and the general public regarding the use of magnetic resonance imaging systems in diagnostic and interventional procedures.  相似文献

Changes in the activities of several lysosomal enzymes were studied during transformation of mouse spleen cells in vitro. The activity of beta-glucuronidase increased during culture in the presence of T or B-cell mitogens, and lymphoblasts contained higher levels of activity than did small, non-transformed lymphocytes. Moreover, lymphoblasts in well-transformed cultures had higher activities than those in poorly-transformed cultures. The activities of other lysosomal enzymes (N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, alpha-mannosidase, beta-glucosidase) also increased during mitogenic stimulation, but each at different rates, although aryl sulphatase was unaffected. Such differences may be of importance when lymphocytes are used for diagnosis of inherited lysosomal deficiency diseases.  相似文献

The MC-38 C57BL/6 mouse colon adenocarcinoma cell line has been transduced with a retroviral construct containing cDNA encoding the human carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene [Robbins PF, Kantor JA, Salgaller M, Horan Hand P, Fernsten PD, Schlom J (1991) Cancer Res 51: 3657]. Two clones, MC-38-ceal and MC-38-cea2, expressed high levels of CEA on their cell surface. A third CEA-expressing cell line, MCA-102-cea3, was similarly derived by transduction of the MCA-102 C57BL/6 mouse fibrosarcoma cell line and is described here. In this study, the three CEA-transduced murine tumor cell lines (MC-38-cea1, MC-38-cea2, MCA-102-cea3) were evaluated for their tumorigenic potential, as well as their ability to serve as in vivo model systems for active and passive immunotherapy studies. Parameters that were investigated include tumor growth rate, the antibody response of the host to CEA, and the CEA content of the tumors. The MC-38-cea2 model appeared to be the most appropriate for immunotherapy studies. Biodistribution studies, using an125I-labeled anti-CEA mAb, demonstrated efficient tumor targeting of MC-38-cea2 tumors in C57BL/6 and athymic mice.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle phosphofructokinase (PFK) purified from the thornback ray is rapidly inactivated by urea concentrations as low as 50 mM at pH values below 7.0. Urea-induced loss of PFK activity is not offset by trimethylamine-N-oxide. Protection against urea-inactivation in vivo, where urea concentration may approach 0.5 M, may be due to two effects. Filamentous (F) actin and muscle thin filaments moderately reduce the urea-induced loss of PFK activity. The binding of PFK to F-actin and to thin filaments is shown by ultracentrifugation experiments. PFK activity in vivo also may be stabilized in this species by the formation of a particulate enzyme form which is totally resistant to inactivation by physiological concentrations of urea.  相似文献
