The cornea is a highly specialized transparent tissue which covers the front of the eye. It is a tough tissue responsible for refracting the light and protecting the sensitive internal contents of the eye. The biomechanical properties of the cornea are primarily derived from its extracellular matrix, the stroma. The majority of previous studies have used strip tensile and pressure inflation testing methods to determine material parameters of the corneal stroma. Since these techniques do not allow measurements of the shear properties, there is little information available on transverse shear modulus of the cornea. The primary objectives of the present study were to determine the viscoelastic behavior of the corneal stroma in shear and to investigate the effects of the compressive strain. A thorough knowledge of the shear properties is required for developing better material models for corneal biomechanics. In the present study, torsional shear experiments were conducted at different levels of compressive strain (0–30%) on porcine corneal buttons. First, the range of linear viscoelasticity was determined from strain sweep experiments. Then, frequency sweep experiments with a shear strain amplitude of 0.2% (which was within the region of linear viscoelasticity) were performed. The corneal stroma exhibited viscoelastic properties in shear. The shear storage modulus, G′, and shear loss modulus, G″, were reported as a function of tissue compression. It was found that although both of these parameters were dependent on frequency, shear strain amplitude, and compressive strain, the average shear storage and loss moduli varied from 2 to 8 kPa, and 0.3 to 1.2 kPa, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the transverse shear modulus is of the same order of magnitude as the out-of-plane Young's modulus and is about three orders of magnitude lower than the in-plane Young's modulus.  相似文献

Three days of fear conditioning that combines tactile stimulation of a row of facial vibrissae (conditioned stimulus, CS) with a tail shock (unconditioned stimulus, UCS) expands the representation of “trained” vibrissae, which can be demonstrated by labeling with 2-deoxyglucose in layer IV of the barrel cortex. We have also shown that functional reorganization of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) increases GABAergic markers in the hollows of “trained” barrels of the adult mouse. This study investigated how whisker-shock conditioning (CS+UCS) affected the expression of puncta of a high-affinity GABA plasma membrane transporter GAT-1 in the barrel cortex of mice 24 h after associative learning paradigm. We found that whisker-shock conditioning (CS+UCS) led to increase expression of neuronal and astroglial GAT-1 puncta in the “trained” row compared to controls: Pseudoconditioned, CS-only, UCS-only and Naïve animals. These findings suggest that fear conditioning specifically induces activation of systems regulating cellular levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA.  相似文献

Probabilistic methods are now being applied increasingly to public health risk assessment instead of the deterministic, conservative, point estimates. An essential part of the probabilistic methods is the selection of probability distribution functions to represent the uncertainty of the random variables considered. We study the effect of selection of different probability distribution functions on the probabilistic outcome using the first-order reliability method (FORM). An example of cancer risk resulting from dermal contact with benzo(a)pyrene (BaP)-contaminated soil is given. Cancer potency factor, soil concentration, and fraction of skin area exposed were assigned normal, lognormal, and uniform probability distribution functions, and the effect of probability of exceeding a target risk level (termed the probability of failure) and sensitivity measures were studied. We investigated the question: what happens when one assumes different distribution shapes with the same mean and standard deviation? The results indicate that the selection of a probability distribution function for the random variables had a moderate impact on the probability of failure when the target risk is at the 50th percentile level, while the impact was much larger for a 95th target risk percentile. We conclude that the probability distribution will have a large impact because in most cases the regulatory threshold risk is at the tail end of the risk distribution. The impact of the distributions on probabilistic sensitivity, however, showed a reversed trend, where the impact was slightly more appreciable for the 50th percentile than for the 95th percentile. The selection of distribution shape did not, however, alter the order of probabilistic sensitivity of the basic random variables.  相似文献

How environmental changes are affecting bird population dynamics is one of the most challenging conservation issues. Dietary studies of top avian predators could offer scope to monitor anthropogenic drivers of ecosystem changes. We investigated the diet of breeding Eleonora''s falcon in an area of Northeastern Algeria in the years 2010–2012. Feathers and insect remains originating from prey plucking behavior were analyzed, providing insights into the seasonally changing diet of this raptor, as well as the trans‐Mediterranean avian migration. A total of 77 species of birds (16 Sylviidae, 11 Turdidae, and 4 Emberizidae), 3 species of insects, and 1 lizard were identified among prey remains, reflecting a diverse diet. Diet composition and prey abundance varied seasonally, faithfully correlating with the passage of migrant birds as recorded from bird ring recoveries. Our findings suggest that dietary studies of predators might be deployed to investigate changes in bird migration. We discuss our results in the context of trans‐Mediterranean migration, with early‐season prey mainly comprising trans‐Saharan migrants (Apus apus and Merops apiaster) and late‐season prey being dominated by Mediterranean winter migrants (Erithacus rubecula, Turdus philomelos, Sylvia atricapilla, and Sturnus vulgaris). Notably, we observed a significant reduction in species richness of passerine remains in 2012, potentially highlighting a decline in the diversity of avian migrants.  相似文献

Mosquitocidal toxins of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) and Lysinibacillus sphaericus 14N1 (Ls14N1) were produced under solid-state fermentation using agro-industrial wastes. Sugar beet pulp–sesame meal (1:1) and wheat germ meal–linen meal (1:1) at 9% were the efficient substrate mixtures for the growth and toxin production of Bti and Ls14N1, respectively. Bti was more active after the addition of beef extract (0.2%) or yeast extract (0.5%) to the medium. On the other hand, the addition of yeast extract (0.2%) or NYSM salts (2%) significantly enhanced the toxicity produced by Ls14N1. The optimum conditions for the maximum toxicity of Bti were at pH 7–8, 20–30% moisture, 4–10% inoculum and 7 days incubation. For Ls14N1, the best conditions were pH 6.5–7.5, 20–30% moisture, 4–10% inoculum and 5 days incubation. It was found that the best thickness of carrier-substrates in the plate (15?cm in diameter) for the maximum mosquitocidal activity was about 0.5?cm for Bti and 0.5–1?cm for Ls14N1. Pilot-scale production in aluminium trays applying the above conditions showed a decrement of toxicity of fermented cultures and some plates were contaminated. These problems were dissolved by reducing the moisture content to 15%, increasing inoculum to 10% and manual agitation of trays every-day.  相似文献

Lack of temperature sensation of myoelectric prosthetic hand limits the daily activities of amputees.To this end,a non-invasive temperature sensation method is proposed to train amputees to sense temperature with psychophysical sensory substitution.In this study,22 healthy participants took part besides 5 amputee participants.The duration time of the study was 31 days with five test steps according to the Leitner technique.An adjustable temperature mug and a Peltier were used to change the temperature of the water/phantom digits to induce temperature to participants.Also,to isolate the surround-ings and show colors,a Virtual Reality(VR)glass was employed.The statistical results conducted are based on the response of participants with questionnaire method.Using Chi-square tests,it is concluded that participants answer the experiment significantly correctly using the Leitner technique(P value<0.05).Also,by applying the"Repeated Measures ANOVA",it is noticed that the time of numbness felt by participants had significant(P value<0.001)difference.Participants could remember lowest and highest temperatures significantly better than other temperatures(P value<0.001);furthermore,the well-trained amputee participant practically using the prosthesis with 72.58%could identify object's temperature with only once time experimenting the color temperature.  相似文献

The influence of temperature, 50 and 60 degrees C, at hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 20 and 10 days, on the performance of anaerobic digestion of cow manure has been investigated in completely stirred tank reactors (CSTRs). Furthermore, the effect of both daily downward and daily upward temperature fluctuations has been studied. In the daily downward temperature fluctuation regime the temperatures of each reactor was reduced by 10 degrees C for 10 h while in the daily upward fluctuation regime the temperature of each reactor was increased 10 degrees C for 5 h. The results show that the methane production rate at 60 degrees C is lower than that at 50 degrees C at all experimental conditions of imposed HRT except when downward temperature fluctuations were applied at an HRT of 10 days. It also was found that the free ammonia concentration not only affects the acetate-utilising bacteria but also the hydrolysis and acidification process. The upward temperature fluctuation affects the maximum specific methanogenesis activity more severely as compared to imposed downward temperature fluctuations. The results clearly reveal the possibility of using available solar energy at daytime to heat up the reactor(s) without the need of heat storage during nights, especially at an operational temperature of 50 degrees C and at a 20 days HRT, and without the jeopardising of the overheating.  相似文献

The avian eggshell membranes are essential elements in the fabrication of the calcified shell as a defense against bacterial penetration. Ovocalyxin-36 (OCX-36) is an abundant avian eggshell membrane protein, which shares protein sequence homology to bactericidal permeability-increasing protein (BPI), lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) and palate, lung and nasal epithelium clone (PLUNC) proteins. We have developed an efficient method to extract OCX-36 from chicken eggshell membranes for purification with cation and anion exchange chromatographies. Purified OCX-36 protein exhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS) binding activity and bound lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli O111:B4 in a dose-dependent manner. OCX-36 showed inhibitory activity against growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538. OCX-36 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were verified at cDNA 211 position and the corresponding proteins proline-71 (Pro-71) or serine-71 (Ser-71) were purified from eggs collected from genotyped hens. A significant difference between Pro-71 and Ser-71 OCX-36 for S. aureus lipoteichoic acid (LTA) binding activity was detected. The current study is a starting point to understand the innate immune role that OCX-36 may play in protection against bacterial invasion of both embryonated eggs (relevant to avian reproductive success) and unfertilized table eggs (relevant to food safety).  相似文献

The objective of this study was to observe the effects of dietary supplementation with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) on performance, egg quality, tissue Zn content, bone parameters, superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), and egg malondialdehyde (MDA) content in laying hens. A total of 288 laying hens at 64 weeks of age were randomly assigned to 4 treatments, 6 replicates, with 12 birds each. Experimental diets included the based diet (without Zn supplementation), and basal diet supplemented with 40, 80, and 120 mg Zn/kg from ZnO-NPs. Feed intake and egg mass were significantly higher in the 40 and 80 ZnO-NPs groups than the other groups. The birds in the 80 ZnO-NPs group had significantly higher egg product than the 120 ZnO-NPs and control groups. Egg shell thickness and shell strength significantly increased in the 40 and 80 ZnO-NPs groups. Moreover, Haugh unit significantly improved in the groups supplemented with ZnO-NPs, compared to the control group. Bone-breaking strength was significantly greater in the 80 ZnO-NPs group than the 120 ZnO-NPs and control groups. Also, ash weight was significantly greater in the 40 and 80 ZnO-NPs groups than the control group. There were significant differences among the groups in the Zn content in plasma, tibia, liver, pancreas, and egg. Relative to the control group, ZnO-NPs supplementation significantly increased the activities of SOD in the liver, pancreas, and plasma. The MDA content in egg was significantly reduced in the groups supplemented with ZnO-NPs. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that ZnO-NPs as dietary supplementation can improve the performance of laying hens, and levels of 40 to 80 ZnO-NPs are the optimal concentrations.
