Mobile phones (MP) emit low-level electromagnetic fields that have been reported to affect neural function in humans; however, demonstrations of such effects have not been conclusive. The purpose of the present study was to test one of the strongest findings in the literature; that of increased "alpha" power in response to MP-type radiation. Healthy participants (N = 120) were tested using a double-blind counterbalanced crossover design, with each receiving a 30-min Active and a 30-min Sham Exposure 1 week apart, while electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded. Resting alpha power (8-12 Hz) was then derived as a function of time, for periods both during and following exposure. Non-parametric analyses were employed as data could not be normalized. Previous reports of an overall alpha power enhancement during the MP exposure were confirmed (relative to Sham), with this effect larger at ipsilateral than contralateral sites over posterior regions. No overall change to alpha power was observed following exposure cessation; however, there was less alpha power contralateral to the exposure source during this period (relative to ipsilateral). Employing a strong methodology, the current findings support previous research that has reported an effect of MP exposure on EEG alpha power.  相似文献

A total of 164 blood samples, collected from free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and fallow deer (Dama dama) in six German national parks (NP) between 2000 and 2002, were assayed for antibodies against nine viral disease agents. Antibodies were only detected against the alpha-herpesviruses; specifically, bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) (22 of 157, 14%), cervid herpesvirus-1 (17 of 157, 10.8%), and caprine herpesvirus-1 (11 of 159, 6.9%). Titers ranged from 4 to 102. Most of the seropositive sera, and those with the highest antibody titers, were from red and roe deer in the Harz and Hochharz NP, which are connected and allow migration between the two. The distribution and specificity of antibodies detected in individual deer suggests that the three alpha-herpesviruses are circulating in these deer populations. No antibodies were detected against bovine viral diarrhea virus, epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus, bovine leukemia virus, bluetongue virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus, or sheep and goat poxvirus.  相似文献

We tested the impact of P deficiency, K deficiency, and their interaction on seed alkaloid concentrations and profile, yield and mineral content in sweet (low-alkaloid) and bitter (high-alkaloid) varieties of narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.). P deficiency reduced seed alkaloid concentrations in sweet, but not in bitter, varieties. Under P deficiency, the alkaloid profile in harvested seed of sweet varieties mimicked that of the bitter variety Fest, with 13-hydroxylupanine dominating over lupanine. With adequate or abundant P, lupanine was the predominant alkaloid in sweet varieties. K deficiency was associated with an 8-fold increase of seed alkaloid concentrations in the sweet variety Danja (from 1000 to 8000 mg kg–1 DM), mostly due to the stimulation of lupanine production. There was a significant interaction between P and K that affected seed alkaloid concentrations in two ways: (i) the inhibitory effect of P deficiency was only apparent under K deficiency and (ii) the lowest seed alkaloid concentrations occurred with abundant K (240 mg K kg–1) and P (60 mg P kg–1). Seed yield of all varieties increased asymptotically with increasing P and reached a maximum at adequate P (30 mg P kg–1). There was no impact of K deficiency on seed yield. In sweet and bitter varieties P supply increased seed N, P and Zn concentrations, but not K. In contrast, seed K concentrations increased and P concentrations decreased with increasing K supply. These findings suggest that P fertiliser should be supplemented with K, to avoid high seed alkaloid concentrations stimulated by asymptomatic K deficiency at high P levels.  相似文献

A large chemotaxis operon was identified in Rhodobacter sphaeroides WS8-N using a probe based on the 3' terminal portion of the Rhizobium meliloti cheA gene. Two genes homologous to the enteric cheY were identified in an operon also containing cheA , cheW , and cheR homologues. The deduced protein sequences of che gene products were aligned with those from Escherichia coli and shown to be highly conserved. A mutant with an interrupted copy of cheA showed normal patterns of swimming, unlike the equivalent mutants in E. coli which are smooth swimming. Tethered cheA mutant cells showed normal responses to changes in organic acids, but increased, inverted responses to sugars. The unusual behaviour of the cheA mutant and the identification of two homologues of cheY suggests that R. sphaeroides has at least two pathways controlling motor activity. To identify functional similarity between the newly identified R. sphaeroides Che pathway and the methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein (MCP)-dependent pathway in enteric bacteria, the R. sphaeroides cheW gene was expressed in a cheW mutant strain of E. coli and found to complement, causing a partial return to a swarming phenotype. In addition, expression of the R. sphaeroides gene in wild-type E. coli resulted in the same increased tumbling and reduced swarming as seen when the native gene is over-expressed in E. coli . The identification of che homologues in R. sphaeroides and complementation by cheW suggests the presence of MCPs in an organism previously considered to use only MCP-independent sensing. The MCP-dependent pathway, appears conserved. In R. sphaeroides this pathway may mediate responses to sugars, while responses to organic acids may in involve a second system, possibly using the second CheY protein identified in this study.  相似文献

Wheat grain yield production in the rain-fed areas is limited by water deficits during crop growth. A greenhouse experiment was conducted during spring 1992 at ICARDA, Tel Hadya, Syria, with eight genotypes representing two Triticum species (Triticum turgidum var. durum and Triticum aestivum L.) under four soil-moisture regimes (95%, 75%, 55%, and 35% field capacity) to study the effect of water deficit on leaf development. The phyllochron was similar in the two species across the watering regimes. The range in variation in phyllochron among the genotypes was similar in the two species. Phyllochron response to water stress among genotypes was distinct in the driest regime in both species. Cham 6 (T. aestivum) and Gallareta (T. turgidum var. durum) had similar phyllochron across all moisture regimes whereas in other genotypes phyllochron was higher in the dries regime. Leaf area decreased with increasing moisture stress. Triticum turgidum var. durum genotypes were later in flowering as they had, on average, one leaf more than Triticum aestivum genotypes with similar leaf appearance rates.  相似文献

Active and adoptive sensitization of rhesus monkeys (Macacca mulatta) as well as the development of a novel sensitive in vitro cell migration inhibition assay for cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in this species are described. First, the correlation of mixed leucocyte-macrophage migration tests (LMMI) with the whole blood lymphocyte transformation (LT) and the delayed hypersensitivity skin test (DH) in immunized animals are shown. Second, these tests are used to demonstrate adoptive transfer of specific/nonspecific cellular immunity (CMI) with dialyzable leucocyte extract (DLE) from immunized donor to unimmunized recipient monkeys. Seventeen animals were immunized with keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH) or hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) or with FCA alone. Acquisition of antigen-specific cellmediated immunity was detected by all three tests within 5 weeks of immunization. Positive LMMI responses were associated with positive DH and LT. However, there was no correlation between the magnitude or time of development of the three responses. Therefore, the LMMI test, like the LT test, is an in vitro parameter of DH, but reflects the activity of different subpopulations of lymphocytes and is regulated by different mechanisms. In addition, 12 naive animals received DLE. Within 3 weeks, transfer of sensitivity was detected towards antigens to which the recipients had previously not been reactive but the donors had been. An enhancement of transformation response to phytohaemagglutinin was also seen. Thus, rhesus DLE contains both donor-specific transfer factor-like and nonspecific adjuvant-like activities. In DLE recipients, unlike immunized animals, LMMI responses were dissociated from DH or LT responses in that positive LMMI was mostly seen with negative DH or LT to antigens. Therefore, LMMI emerged as the most sensitive assay for detecting adoptive transfer of CMI by DLE in vivo, supporting the view that different mechanisms regulate LMMI, LT, and DH.  相似文献

In a group of patients who suffered from chronic ill health after an attack of acute infectious mononucleosis a disorder of T cell regulation was found. By means of cytochemical reactions the staining pattern associated with T suppressor cells was found in a greater percentage and that associated with T helper cells in a smaller percentage than in normal subjects. In a few patients this finding was confirmed in a functional suppressor assay. The patients were unwell for at least a year but most later made a complete recovery, which was associated with return to normal of the lymphocyte subsets.  相似文献

Cold agglutinins are human autoantibodies, usually of the IgM class, which agglutinate RBC at low temperature. The major subset recognizes the I/i carbohydrate Ag, and many of these antibodies bear cross-reacting idiotypic determinants. An anti-idiotypic mAb that is specific for one of the idiotopes largely confined to cold agglutinins has been used to identify and monitor tumor cells that secrete these molecules in two patients. The tumor cells were immortalized with EBV and the idiotope-positive lines used to investigate the utilization of the VH and VL genes by these antibodies. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the two cold agglutinins (FS-1 and FS-2) revealed the utilization of a single common gene segment, VH4-21. Serologic analysis documented that only human antibodies utilizing the VH4-21 gene segment were reactive in the idiotope assay, other VHIV antibodies as well as a panel of antibodies derived from other VH families being negative. The DH, JH, VK, and JK gene segments of FS-1 and FS-2 were structurally distinct. These data suggest that the structural basis for the cross-reactive idiotope as well as cold agglutinin activity is the VH4-21 gene segment. A nucleotide change in H chain CDR1 of both cold agglutinins results in the substitution of an aspartic acid residue for glycine at position 31, suggesting that this amino acid might be critical to recognition of the red cell Ag.  相似文献

The worldwide rise in antibiotic resistance necessitates the development of novel antimicrobial strategies. Although many workers have used photodynamic therapy (PDT) to kill bacteria in vitro, the use of this approach has seldom been reported in vivo in animal models of infection. We have previously described the first use of PDT to treat excisional wound infections by Gram-(-) bacteria in living mice. However, these infected wound models involved a short timespan between infection (30 min) and treatment by PDT. We now report on the use of PDT to treat an established soft-tissue infection in mice. We used Staphylococcus aureus stably transformed with a Photorhabdus luminescenslux operon (luxABCDE) that was genetically modified to be functional in Gram-(+) bacteria. These engineered bacteria emitted bioluminescence, allowing the progress of the infection to be monitored in both space and time with a low light imaging charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. One million cells were injected into one or both thigh muscles of mice that had previously been rendered neutropenic by cyclophosphamide administration. Twenty-four hours later, the bacteria had multiplied more than one hundredfold; poly-L-lysine chlorin e6 conjugate or free chlorin e6 was injected into one area of infected muscle and imaged with the CCD camera. Thirty minutes later, red light from a diode laser was delivered as a surface spot or by interstitial fiber into the infection. There was a light dose dependent loss of bioluminescence (to <5% of that seen in control infections) not seen in untreated infections or those treated with light alone, but in some cases, the infection recurred. Treatment with conjugate alone led to a lesser reduction in bioluminescence. Infections treated with free chlorin e6 responded less well and the infection subsequently increased over the succeeding days, probably due to PDT-mediated tissue damage. PDT-treated infected legs healed better than legs with untreated infections. This data shows that PDT may have applications in drug-resistant soft-tissue infections.  相似文献
