Autumn migration of adult Eurasian hobbies Falco subbuteo from Europe to southern Africa was recorded by satellite telemetry and observed routes were compared with randomly simulated routes. Two non-random features of observed routes were revealed: (i) shifts to more westerly longitudes than straight paths to destinations and (ii) strong route convergence towards a restricted area close to the equator (1 degree S, 15 degrees E). The birds migrated south or southwest to approximately 10 degrees N, where they changed to south-easterly courses. The maximal spread between routes at 10 degrees N (2134 km) rapidly decreased to a minimum (67 km) close to the equator. We found a striking relationship between the route convergence and the distribution of continuous rainforest, suggesting that hobbies minimize flight distance across the forest, concentrating in a corridor where habitat may be more suitable for travelling and foraging. With rainforest forming a possible ecological barrier, many migrants may cross the equator either at 15 degrees E, similar to the hobbies, or at 30-40 degrees E, east of the rainforest where large-scale migration is well documented. Much remains to be understood about the role of the rainforest for the evolution and future of the trans-equatorial Palaearctic-African bird migration systems.  相似文献

The identification and study of small RNAs, including microRNAs and trans-acting small interfering RNAs, have added a layer of complexity to the many pathways that regulate plant development. These molecules, which function as negative regulators of gene expression, are now known to have greatly expanded roles in a variety of developmental processes affecting all major plant structures, including meristems, leaves, roots, and inflorescences. Mutants with specific developmental phenotypes have also advanced our knowledge of the biogenesis and mode of action of these diverse small RNAs. In addition, previous models on the cell autonomy of microRNAs may have to be revised as more data accumulate supporting their long distance transport. As many of these small RNAs appear to be conserved across different species, knowledge gained from one species is expected to have general application. However, a few surprising differences in small RNA function seem to exist between monocots and dicots regarding meristem initiation and sex determination. Integrating these unique functions into the overall scheme for plant growth will give a more complete picture of how they have evolved as unique developmental systems.  相似文献

In Arabidopsis, SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (STM) and CLAVATA1 (CLV1) competitively regulate meristem homeostasis. Here, we explore the interaction of their maize homologs knotted1 (kn1) and thick tassel dwarf1 (td1). kn1 mutants form fewer lateral organs and td1 inflorescences are fasciated with additional floral organs. Double mutants show kn1 epistatic to td1 in seedling and ear development but dose-sensitivity exists later to promote leaf initiation. Thus kn1 and td1 function in a pathway to maintain meristem homeostasis but their products may interact with different partners during development.  相似文献

Objective

Higher selenium level has been hypothesized to have the potential to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases including dyslipidemia. However, results from previous studies are inconsistent. This study aims to determine the association between selenium level and dyslipidemia in elderly Chinese with relatively low selenium status.

Methods

A cross-sectional study of 1859 participants aged 65 or older from four rural counties in China was conducted. Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDLC) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDLC), nail selenium concentration and APOE genotype were measured in all subjects. The four types of dyslipidemia were defined as >5.17mmol/L for High-TC, >1.69 mmol/L for High-TG, >3.36 mmol/L for High-LDLC, and <1.04 mmol/L for Low-HDLC according to Chinese Guidelines on Prevention and Treatment of Dyslipidemia in Adults. Logistic models adjusting for age, gender, APOE genotype, body mass index, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, medication use for cardiovascular diseases were used to examine the relationship between selenium levels and the risk of dyslipidemia.

Results

Mean nail selenium concentration was 0.465μg/gin this sample. Rates for High-TC, High-LDLC, High-TG, Low-HDLC were 18.13%, 13.23%, 12.21% and 32.76% respectively. Results from logistic models indicated that higher selenium levels were significantly associated with higher risk of High-TC, High-LDLC and lower risk of Low-HDLC adjusting for covariates (p < 0.0001). Compared with the lowest selenium quartile group, participants in selenium quartile groups 2, 3 and 4 had significantly higher rates of High-TC, High-LDLC, High-TG, and lower rate of Low-HDLC adjusting for covariates. No significant association was observed between selenium level and the risk of High-TG. APOEε4 carriers had higher rates of High-TC and High-LDLC. There was no interaction between selenium level and APOE with the rates of dyslipidemia.

Conclusions

Our results suggest long-term selenium exposure level may be associated with the risk of dyslipidemia in elderly population. Future studies are needed to examine the underlying mechanism of the association.  相似文献

Triploid intersexes homozygous for a mutant (msl-2) known to impede the hyperactivation of the X chromosome in diploid males differentiate into adults, sexually indistinguishable from their heterozygous sibs. A shift toward female sexual differentiation mediated by manipulating the rearing temperature is accompanied by an apparent increase in the level of an X-linked gene product. This unexpected result is rationalized in terms of differential lethality of individuals at the two extremities of the distribution of X-activity levels in intersexes raised at a particular temperature. No evidence of a mosaicism comparable to the sexual mosaicism exhibited could be found with respect to an X-linked gene product in triploid intersexes.  相似文献

A genomic clone for human carboxypeptidase has been isolated with a probe for rat CPA1 cDNA. A 1.7-kb HindIII/EcoRI fragment from the 3' flanking region of human carboxypeptidase detects a DNA polymorphism with BglIII. Multipoint linkage analysis with an established map of chromosome 7 markers shows that the most likely location of carboxypeptidase is at 7q31-qter, between D7S87 and D7S93. All other placements can be excluded with odds greater than 100:1. These and other markers confirm that carboxypeptidase lies distal to the locus for cystic fibrosis, at a distance of approximately 12 centimorgans. The regions containing identity to the rat gene were sequenced and shown to be 82% identical to exons 9 and 10 of the rat gene. The presence of a codon for isoleucine at the residues corresponding to codon 255 of rat CPA1 cDNA strongly suggests that the A form of human carboxypeptidase has been isolated.  相似文献

In January 1997, the German Research Association (DFG) established a special research programme for an integrated analysis of metallic resource flows. The programme is a joint interdisciplinary effort of the Technical University of Aachen and of the Research Centre Jiilich. Apart from many other activities, a series of conferences is organised within this programme. In October 1997, a first conference was held on “The Economics of Resource Flows: The Case of Aluminium”. In December 1997, a second conference took place on “Life Cycle Assessment of Aluminium: Methods and Applications”. In April 1998 the third workshop was held entitled “Methodological Aspects of a Resource-oriented Analysis of Material Flows”. The next conference is planned for December 1998 on “Environmental related Aspects of Aluminium Production”. Finally, a conference on “Methods for an Integrated Evaluation of Material Flows” is under consideration for 1999.  相似文献
