Long-term vegetation studies are needed to better predict the impact of future climate change on vegetation structure and distribution. According to the IPCC scenario, the Mediterranean region is expected to undergo significant climatic variability over the course of this century. Cedruslibani (A. Rich), in particular, is currently distributed in limited areas in the Eastern Mediterranean region, which are expected to be affected by such climate change. In order to predict the impact of future global warming, we have used fossil pollen data and model simulations. Palaeobotanical data show that C.libani has been affected by both climate change and human activities. Populations of C.libani survived in refugial zones when climatic conditions were less favourable and its range extended during periods of more suitable climate conditions. Simulations of its future geographical distribution for the year 2100 using a dynamic vegetation model show that only three areas from Mount Lebanon may allow its survival. These results extrapolated for cedar forests for the entire Eastern Mediterranean region show that forests in Syria are also threatened by future global warming. In southern Turkey, cedar forests seem to be less threatened. These results are expected to help in the long-term conservation of cedar forests in the Near East. 相似文献
In this study, we selected two known pathogen-inducible cis-acting elements, F and E17, to construct synthetic pathogen-inducible promoters for analysis in transformed canola (Brassica napus L.). The synthetic promoter approach was used, which involved the insertion of dimers and combining two cis-acting elements (E17 and F) upstream of the minimal CaMV 35S promoter. Canola plants were transformed by three constructs,
pGEE, pGFF, pGFFEE containing synthetic promoters (SP), SP-EE, SP-FF and SP-FFEE, respectively. Analyses of histochemical
and fluorometric GUS expression indicated that synthetic promoters responded to fungal elicitors and phytohormone treatments.
The SP-FF promoter showed high responses against methyl jasmonate and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, while SP-EE demonstrated inducibility only in response to salicylic acid and Rhizoctonia solani. The SP-EE promoter similar to SP-FFEE, did not respond to S. sclerotiorum and methyl jasmonate. However, SP-FFEE was highly induced by R. solani elicitors and showed that the level of GUS expression was greater than that by either of E17 or F elements alone. These three
synthetic promoters did not activate the expression of the reporter gene in response to cold, heat, UV and wounding. 相似文献
The presence of inflammatory cells and their products in the tumor microenvironment plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of a tumor. Releasing the cytokines from a host in response to infection and inflammation can inhibit tumor growth and progression. However, tumor cells can also respond to the host cytokines with increasing the growth/invasion/metastasis. Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. The microenvironment of a bladder tumor has been indicated to be rich in growth factors/inflammatory cytokines that can induce the tumor growth/progression and also suppress the immune system. On the contrary, modulate of the cancer progression has been shown following upregulation of the cytokines-related pathways that suggested the cytokines as potential therapeutic targets. In this study, we provide a summary of cytokines that are involved in BC formation/regression with both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties. A more accurate understanding of tumor microenvironment creates favorable conditions for cytokines targeting to treat BC. 相似文献
Half of the cases of vision loss in people under 60 years of age have been attributed to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This is a multifactorial disease with late onset. It has been demonstrated that many different genetic loci are implicated in the risk of developing AMD in different populations. In the current study, we investigated the association of high-temperature requirement A-1 (HTRA1) gene polymorphisms with the risk of developing AMD in the Iranian population.
Methods:
Genomic DNA samples were extracted from 120 patients with AMD and 120 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. A 385 base-pair fragment of the HTRA1 gene promoter region was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique and sequenced. The frequencies of the alleles were calculated and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software.
Results:
Our study demonstrated that the rate of polymorphisms rs11200638 -625 G>A and rs2672598 -487T>C were significantly greater in AMD patients than in healthy controls from the Iranian population.
Conclusions:
The results of our study indicate that HTRA1 gene promoter region polymorphisms are associated with the risk of developing AMD in the Iranian population.Key Words: HTRA1, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, Macular Degeneration, Iran相似文献
Aim of this study was to evaluate effects of Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on repair of articular cartilage defects. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (Lipus) can induce the differentiation and activation of chondrocytes. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Lipus on articular cartilage defects in a sheep. Eight sheep were divided in to two groups. The animals received bilateraly, articular cartilage defects 4 mm in diameter and 2 mm in deep on the patellar groove and experimental groups were treated with intensity 200 mW/cm2, 20 min/day with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for 2 month. Then both knee joints underwent surgery for remove of formed tissue sample from defects. The samples were evaluated by Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), Safranin-o staining, Immunofluorescence Staining and Morphological characterization. The best and worst sample per group according to Macroscopic and micriscopic scoring were icentified. The results showed that the operated groups with-Lipus-treatment and without-Lipus treatment had considered statistically significant. Gross photography revealed that the defects in experimental groups were filled with proliferative tissue, while in control groups, a thin layer of proliferative tissue was formed in defects. qRT-PCR results showed the expression of coll2, sox9, aggrecan and Osteocalcin in experimental groups. Intense safranin-O staining show the formation cartilage tissue in ultrasound treated group, while loose safranin-o-staining were observed at the control groups. Immunofluorescence staining showed the type 2 Collagen protein expression. We suggest that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound provide the mechanistic basis force for articular cartilage repair and effective treatment modality for improving of articular cartilage defects.
The spores of several Bacillus species, including Bacillus pumilus SAFR-032 and B. safensis FO-36b, which were isolated from the spacecraft assembly facility at NASA''s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, are unusually resistant to UV radiation and hydrogen peroxide. In order to identify candidate genes that might be associated with these resistances, the whole genome of B. pumilus SAFR-032, and the draft genome of B. safensis FO-36b were compared in detail with the very closely related type strain B. pumilus ATCC7061T. 170 genes are considered characteristic of SAFR-032, because they are absent from both FO-36b and ATCC7061T. Forty of these SAFR-032 characteristic genes are entirely unique open reading frames. In addition, four genes are unique to the genomes of the resistant SAFR-032 and FO-36b. Fifty three genes involved in spore coat formation, regulation and germination, DNA repair, and peroxide resistance, are missing from all three genomes. The vast majority of these are cleanly deleted from their usual genomic context without any obvious replacement. Several DNA repair and peroxide resistance genes earlier reported to be unique to SAFR-032 are in fact shared with ATCC7061T and no longer considered to be promising candidates for association with the elevated resistances. Instead, several SAFR-032 characteristic genes were identified, which along with one or more of the unique SAFR-032 genes may be responsible for the elevated resistances. These new candidates include five genes associated with DNA repair, namely, BPUM_0608 a helicase, BPUM_0652 an ATP binding protein, BPUM_0653 an endonuclease, BPUM_0656 a DNA cytosine-5- methyltransferase, and BPUM_3674 a DNA helicase. Three of these candidate genes are in immediate proximity of two conserved hypothetical proteins, BPUM_0654 and BPUM_0655 that are also absent from both FO-36b and ATCC7061T. This cluster of five genes is considered to be an especially promising target for future experimental work. 相似文献
