1. A comparative study of calcium and bicarbonate in the urine was carried out on the subterranean mole rat Cryptomys hottenttus and the terrestrial vlei rat Otomys irroratus. 2. The two species were kept on two different diets; carrots, a high calcium diet (41 mg/ 100 kg) or potatoes, a low calcium diet (14 mg/ 100g). 3. The results show that the urine of the mole rat contained high values of calcium bicarbonate on either diet. 4. The urine of the vlei rat showed high values of calcium bicarbonate only when kept on the high calcium diet. 5. From these results we assume that in subterranean rodents excretion of calcium bicarbonate is an adaptive mechanism to unload CO2 without increasing its concentration in the hypercapnic environment.  相似文献

In vitro cell-mediated immune responses to homologous rabbit immunoglobulin G (IgG), purified protein derivative (PPD), native Type I, II, and III collagen, and denatured Type I, II, and III collagen were studied in an IgG-induced animal model of immune synovitis. Immune response was measured as augmented [3H]thymidine incorporation by spleen cells on exposure to antigen. Immune responses were observed in vitro after 72 hr of culture with antigen, while a majority of responses to antigens occurred after 96 hr of incubation. Separation of spleen cell subpopulations showed that measured immune responses were of T-cell origin. In vitro cell-mediated immune responses were observed for native and denatured collagen in splenic cell cultures from six of seven synovitic rabbits (P less than 0.01) but not in control spleen cell cultures derived from normal, adjuvant-primed or IgG-immune nonsynovitic rabbits. The incidence of cellular reactivity to incubation with native interstitial collagens was as follows: Type I, 43%; Type II, 43%; Type III, 57%. The incidence of in vitro immune responses to denatured collagens in cultures derived from rabbits with synovitis was: Type I, 50%; Type II, 50%; Type III, 67%. The relatively high incidence of immune response to both native and denatured collagens suggests that immunity to structural components of the synovial membrane and the adjacent surface of articular cartilage may play a role in the inflammation observed in immune synovitis.  相似文献

Summary Exposure of the mucosal side of toad(Bufo bufo) urinary bladder and frog(Rana ridibunda) skin to the polyene ionophore nystatin, resulted in stable preparations in which the apical resistance was negligible compared to the basolateral resistance. The preparations support passive K currents in both directions and an amiloride-insensitive Na current in the apicalserosal direction which is blocked by ouabain. The nystatintreated toad bladder was used to study the electrical properties of the basolateral membrane by means of current-voltage curves recorded transepithelially. The K current showed strong rectification at cellular potentials negative with respect to the interstitial space. The ouabain-sensitive current increased with membrane voltage at negative voltages but saturated above+20 mV.  相似文献

Celloidin sections from formalin-fixed brain and spinal cord of primates are stored in 70% alcohol after cutting, soaked in 2% pyridine in 50% alcohol for 6-8 hr at 37 C, and transferred to 1% concentrated NH4OH in 50% alcohol 15-18 hr at 20-25 C. After washing and flattening, the sections are transferred to 1% silver protein solution containing 30 ml of 0.2 M H3BO3/100 ml. Impregnation is accomplished in 50 ml screw-top jars, 50 mm in diameter, which are filled to a depth of 35 mm, and have 1 gm of copper foil, 0.002 inch thick added. The foil is folded in loose accordion-fashion, pierced and threaded, cleaned in 5% HNO3, rinsed in distilled water, and suspended in the solution just above the sections by fastening the thread to the jar lid. The sections are impregnated for 24 hr at 37 C, rinsed in distilled water, reduced in a solution of 5% Na2SO3 and 1% hydroquinone for 10 min, washed in distilled water and toned in 0.2% gold chloride for 5 min. After rinsing in distilled water, the sections are transferred to 1% oxalic acid for 45-60 sec, washed in distilled water and placed in 5% Na2S2O3 for 5 min. Sections are then washed, dehydrated to 95% alcohol, cleared in terpineol, followed by 3 changes in xylene, and mounted.  相似文献

Two species of spiny mice of the genus Acomys—the golden spiny A. russaturs and the common spiny A. cuhirinus—are syrnpatnc in the and and hot parts of the Rift Valley in Israel. The coexistence of these two species is due to exclusion of A. russatus mice by A. cuhirinus mice from nocturnal activity. The aim of this research was to study if odor signals released by A. cahirinus mice can play a role in the exclusion of A. russatus mice. A. russatus mice with an implanted transmitter recording body temperature (Tb) were kept alone in a metabolic chamber under constant conditions of ambient temperature (27°C) and photoperiod (12 h light: 12 h dark). After 5 days of recording, chemical signals from an A. cuhirinus mouse were added through the air tube going into the metabolic chamber of the A. russatus mice. This treatment caused a shift of ∼ 2 h inTb daily rhythm of the naive tested A. russutus mice, whereas no shift was observed in A. russatus mice that had been kept in the same room with the A. cahirinus mouse before measurements. These results strongly support the idea that chemical signals released by A. cahirinus mice can entrain the Tb rhythms of A. russatus mice. Therefore, it may be assumed that the exclusion of A. russatus mice from nocturnal activity by A. cuhirinus mice could be achieved through the odor released by the latter.  相似文献

The effects of N-alkylation on the redox potential of the couples NiLi2+/NiLi+, L = tetraaza-14-membered-macrocyclic ligands, and on the properties of the monovalent nickel complexes in aqueous solutions are reported for 14 complexes. The spectra and lifetimes of the NiLi+ complexes are reported. The self-exchange rates for the couples NiLi2+/NiLi+ were determined. Two of the ligands were synthesized for the first time for this study. Cyclic voltammetry and pulse radiolysis were used. The results point out that: (i) N-alkylation always shifts the redox potential to a less cathodic one; this effect stems to a large degree from the decrease in the solvation energy of the complex caused by the N-alkylation of the ligand. (ii). The lifetime of the monovalent complexes is not linearly related to the redox potential of the NiLi2+/NiLi+ couples. (iii) The NiLi+ complexes exist in several isomeric forms; the rate of the isomerization depends on the structure of the ligand. (iv) Different isomers of NiLi+ may be formed when the complex NiLi2+ is reduced by different reagents; therefore, the pulse-radiolytically formed NiLi+ complexes might have different properties than those formed electrochemically.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that local cortical feedback can havean important effect on the response of neurons in primary visualcortex to the orientation of visual stimuli. In this work, westudy the role of the cortical feedback in shaping thespatiotemporal patterns of activity in cortex. Two questionsare addressed: one, what are the limitations on the ability ofcortical neurons to lock their activity to rotatingoriented stimuli within a single receptive field? Two, can thelocal architecture of visual cortex lead to the generation ofspontaneous traveling pulses of activity? We study theseissues analytically by a population-dynamic model of ahypercolumn in visual cortex. The order parameter thatdescribes the macroscopic behavior of the network is thetime-dependent population vector of the network. We firststudy the network dynamics under the influence of a weakly tunedinput that slowly rotates within the receptive field. We showthat if the cortical interactions have strong spatialmodulation, the network generates a sharply tuned activityprofile that propagates across the hypercolumn in a path thatis completely locked to the stimulus rotation. The resultantrotating population vector maintains a constant angular lagrelative to the stimulus, the magnitude of which grows with thestimulus rotation frequency. Beyond a critical frequency thepopulation vector does not lock to the stimulus but executes aquasi-periodic motion with an average frequency that is smallerthan that of the stimulus. In the second part we consider thestable intrinsic state of the cortex under the influence of isotropic stimulation. We show that if the local inhibitoryfeedback is sufficiently strong, the network does not settleinto a stationary state but develops spontaneous travelingpulses of activity. Unlike recent models of wave propagation incortical networks, the connectivity pattern in our model isspatially symmetric, hence the direction of propagation ofthese waves is arbitrary. The interaction of these waves withan external-oriented stimulus is studied. It is shown that thesystem can lock to a weakly tuned rotating stimulus if thestimulus frequency is close to the frequency of the intrinsic wave.  相似文献

1. 1. The thermoregulatory responses to manipulations of photoperiod in wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), which were drawn from a population living at a high latitude (57°N) were studied.
2. 2. Mice captured in spring were acclimated to two different photoperiod regimes 16L:8D and 8L:16D at a constant ambient temperature of 24°C, for 3 weeks.
3. 3. Daily rhythms of body temperature, oxygen consumption and body temperature at various ambient temperatures, nonshivering thermogenesis (the response to a noradrenaline injection) and body mass were measured. Minimal overall thermal conductance was calculated for both groups.
4. 4. Acclimation to long photophase increased the thermoregulatory abilities at relatively high ambient temperatures while that of long-scotophase increased thermoregulatory abilities at low ambient temperatures.
5. 5. Changes in photoperiod may therefore be used as cues for seasonal acclimatization of thermoregulatory mechanisms in this population of wood mice.

Ouabain-blocked toad urinary bladders were maintained in Na+-free mucosal solutions, and a depolarizing solution of high K+ activity containing only 5 mM Na+ on the serosal side. Exposure to mucosal sodium (20 mM activity) evoked a transient amiloride-blockable inward current, which decayed to near zero within one hour. The apical sodium conductance increased in the initial phase of the current decay and decreased in the second phase. The conductance decrease required Ca2+ to be present on the serosal side and was more rapid when the mucosal Na+ activity was higher. At 20 mM mucosal Na+ and 3 mM serosal Ca2+ the initial (maximal) rate of inhibition amounted to 20% in 10 min. The conductance decrease could be accelerated by raising the serosal Ca2+ activity to 10 mM. The inhibition reversed on lowering the serosal Ca2+ to 3 μM and, in addition, the mucosal Na+ to zero. Exposure of the mucosal surface to the ionophore nystatin abolished the Ca2+ sensitivity of the transcellular conductance, showing that the Ca2+-sensitive conductance resides in the apical membrane. The data imply that in the K+-depolarized epithelia, cellular Ca2+, taken up from the serosal medium by means of a Na+-Ca2+ antiport, cause feedback inhibition by blockage of apical Na+ channels. However, the rate of inhibition is small, such that this regulatory mechanism will have little effect at 1 mM serosal Ca2+ and less than 20 mM cellular Na+.  相似文献

Abstract— l -DOPA or d -amphetamine administration disaggregates brain polyribosomes in animals maintained in an environment warm enough (26°C) so that the drugs concurrently elevate their body temperatures to above 39°C. The production of equivalent hyperthermia (by keeping control rats at ambient temperatures of 40–44° C) does not cause similar disaggregation of brain polysomes. Hence, the role of hyperthermia in the drug-induced disaggregation is permissive.  相似文献
