Effects of facial coloration on facial attractiveness judgments are hypothesized to be “universal” (i.e., similar across cultures). Cross-cultural similarity in facial color preferences is a critical piece of evidence for this hypothesis. However, only two studies have directly compared facial color preferences in two cultures. Both of those studies reported that White UK and Black African participants showed similar preferences for facial coloration. By contrast with the cross-cultural similarity reported in those studies, here we show cultural differences in the effects of facial coloration on Chinese and White UK participants' facial attractiveness judgments. While Chinese participants preferred faces with decreased yellowness to faces with increased yellowness, White UK participants preferred faces with increased yellowness to faces with decreased yellowness. Chinese participants also demonstrated weaker preferences for facial redness and stronger preferences for facial lightness than did White UK participants. These results suggest that preferences for facial coloration are not universal.  相似文献

SUMMARY: We present CAFE (Computational Analysis of gene Family Evolution), a tool for the statistical analysis of the evolution of the size of gene families. It uses a stochastic birth and death process to model the evolution of gene family sizes over a phylogeny. For a specified phylogenetic tree, and given the gene family sizes in the extant species, CAFE can estimate the global birth and death rate of gene families, infer the most likely gene family size at all internal nodes, identify gene families that have accelerated rates of gain and loss (quantified by a p-value) and identify which branches cause the p-value to be small for significant families. Conditions were evaluated for optimum cryopreservation of primary chicken embryo kidney (CEK) cells. The recovery of viable CEK cells was best (50.8% viability) when the concentration of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the freezing medium was 20% (v/v). The viability of primary CEK cells was not influenced by the concentration of calf serum in the freezing medium, the duration of storage at −70°C before storage in liquid nitrogen, cell concentration, or the method of addition or dilution of DMSO. Thawed cells recovered and grew in complete growth medium similarly to cells freshly isolated from kidney, and influenza viruses produced plaques in the monolayer. The cryopreservation procedures described here may facilitate maintenance of a standard stock of primary CEK cells for laboratories where preparation of primary CEK cells is not an option.  相似文献

Tested was the hypothesis that juvenile Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) would exhibit no response in short‐term survival or swimming performance when exposed to varying concentrations of suspended sediment simulating dredge plumes in waterways where this species may be impacted by dredging operations. Sediment collected from Savannah Harbor, South Carolina, USA was used to simulate a worst‐case scenario. Juvenile sturgeon were contained for a 3‐day period in flow‐through aquaria, with limited opportunity for movement, in sediment of varying concentrations (100, 250 and 500 mg L?1 total suspended solids [TSS]) mimicking prolonged exposure to suspended sediment plumes near an operating dredge. Of the 90 fish exposed, 86 (96%) survived the test. Of the four fish that died, one was exposed to 250 TSS and three to 500 TSS. Swimming performance results indicated that nearly all fish were positively rheotactic. Critical swim speeds (Ucrits) were moderate, whether measured as absolute values (21–31 cm s?1) or as relative values (1.4–2.1 body lengths s?1), with no significant differences among treatments (F < 0.83, P ≥ 0.4874). Behavior was dominated by contact‐based locomotion and station‐holding. Absence of substantial or significant immediate effects on survival and swimming performance suggest that impacts of sediment plumes in nature, where fish have freedom of movement and the power to escape rapidly, are minimal.  相似文献

Natural populations often exist in spatially diverse environments and may experience variation in the strength and targets of natural selection across their ranges. Drosophila provides an excellent opportunity to study the effects of spatially varying selection in natural populations, as both Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans live across a wide range of environments in North America. Here, we characterize patterns of variation in transposable elements (TEs) from six populations of D. melanogaster and nine populations of D. simulans sampled from multiple latitudes across North America. We find a nearly twofold excess of TEs in D. melanogaster relative to D. simulans, with this difference largely driven by TEs segregating at the lowest and highest allele frequencies. We find no effect of latitude on either total TE abundance or average TE allele frequencies in either species. Moreover, we show that, as a class of mutations, the most common patterns of TE variation do not coincide with the sampled latitudinal gradient, nor are they consistent with local adaptation acting on environmental differences found in the most extreme latitudes. We also do not find a cline in ancestry for North American D. melanogaster—for either TEs or single nucleotide polymorphisms—suggesting a limited role for demography in shaping patterns of TE variation. Though we find little evidence for widespread clinality among TEs in Drosophila, this does not necessarily imply a limited role for TEs in adaptation. We discuss the need for improved models of adaptation to large‐scale environmental heterogeneity, and how these might be applied to TEs.  相似文献

The monoclonal antibody tAb2 binds the N-terminal sequence of transforming growth factor alpha, VVSHFND. With the help of combinatorial peptide libraries it is possible to find homologous peptides that bind tAb2 with an affinity similar to that of the epitope. The conformational flexibility of short peptides can be constrained by cyclization in order to improve their affinity to the antibody and their stability towards proteolysis. Two cyclic peptides which are cross-reactive binders for tAb2 were selected earlier using combinatorial peptide libraries. One is cyclized by an amide bond between the N-alpha group and the side-chain of the last residue (cyclo-SHFNEYE), and the other by a disulfide bridge (cyclo-CSHFNDYC). The complex structures of tAb2 with the linear epitope peptide VVSHFND and with cyclo-SHFNEYE were determined by X-ray diffraction. Both peptides show a similar conformation and binding pattern in the complex. The linear peptide SHFNEYE does not bind tAb2, but cyclo-SHFNEYE is stabilized in a loop conformation suitable for binding. Hence the cyclization counteracts the exchange of aspartate in the epitope sequence to glutamate. Isothermal titration calorimetry was used to characterize the binding energetics of tAb2 with the two cyclic peptides and the epitope peptide. The binding reactions are enthalpically driven with an unfavorable entropic contribution under all measured conditions. The association reactions are characterized by negative DeltaC(p) changes and by the uptake of one proton per binding site. A putative candidate for proton uptake during binding is the histidine residue in each of the peptides. Hydrogen bonds and the putative formation of an electrostatic pair between the protonated histidine and a carboxy group may contribute markedly to the favorable enthalpy of complex formation.Implications to cyclization of peptides for stabilization are discussed.  相似文献

Current models suggest that (i) filamentous bacteria are protected against predation by nanoflagellates, (ii) prey size is positively correlated with prey-predator contact probability, and (iii) contact probability is mainly responsible for size-selective predation by interception-feeding flagellates. We used five strains of filamentous bacteria and one bacterivorous nanoflagellate, Ochromonas sp. strain DS, to test these assumptions. The five strains, including one spirochete and four Betaproteobacteria strains, were isolated by the filtration-acclimatization method. All five strains possess flexible cells, but they differ in average cell length, which ranged from 4.5 to 13.7 micro m. High-resolution video microscopy was used to measure contact, capture, and ingestion rates, as well as selectivity of the flagellate feeding. Growth and feeding experiments with satiating and nonsatiating food conditions, as well as experiments including alternative well-edible prey, were performed. In contrast to predictions by current models, the flagellate successfully consumed all the tested filamentous strains. The ingestion rate was negatively correlated with bacterial length. On the other hand, the lengths of the filamentous bacteria were not positively correlated to the contact rate and capture rate but were negatively correlated to ingestion efficiency. In experiments including alternative nonfilamentous prey, the flagellates showed negative selection for filamentous bacteria, which was independent of food concentration and is interpreted as a passive selection. Our observations indicate that (i) size alone is not sufficient to define a refuge for filamentous bacteria from nanoflagellate predation and (ii) for the investigated filamentous bacteria, prey-predator contact probability could be more influenced by factors other than the prey size.  相似文献

Light is an essential environmental factor in the progression of plant growth and development but prolonged exposure to high levels of light stress can cause cellular damage and ultimately result in the death of the plant. Plants can respond defensively to this stress for a limited period and this involves changes to their gene expression profiles. Proteomic approaches were therefore applied to the study of the response to high light stress in the Arabidopsis thaliana plant species. Wild-type Arabidopsis was grown under normal light (100 micromol photons.m(-2).s(-1)) conditions and then subjected to high light (1000 micromol photons.m(-2).s(-1)) stress. Chloroplasts were then isolated from these plants and both soluble and insoluble proteins were extracted and subjected to two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis. The resolved proteins were subsequently identified by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and comparative database analysis. 64 protein spots, which were identified as candidate factors that responded to high light stress, were then selected for analysis and 52 of these were successfully identified using MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. 35 of the 52 identified proteins were found to decrease their expression levels during high light stress and a further 14 of the candidate proteins had upregulated expression levels under these conditions. Most of the proteins that were downregulated during high light stress are involved in photosynthesis pathways. However, many of the 14 upregulated proteins were identified as previously well-known high light stress-related proteins, such as heat shock proteins (HSPs), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Three novel proteins that were more highly expressed during periods of high light stress but had no clear functional relationship to these conditions, were also identified in this study.  相似文献
