Since 1979 it is known that, in Australian species of Uca, female waving exists in addition to usual male display. The present paper deals mainly with female waving in U. polita studied in Darwin (North Australia). A few remarks on U. dampieri, U. vomeris, U. seismella and U. hirsutimanus are added. The species mentioned are members of two species groups or subgenera, which characterizes female waving as an ancestral (plesiomorph) trait. Frame by frame analysis of film sequences (open air shots) indicate homology of movements in the two sexes of U. polita. As in males, waving of females can be combined with locomotion on radial paths starting from the burrow entrance and the display is performed in series with a corresponding number of gestures. Unlike males, waving females mostly use both their chelipeds and tend to show shorter durations with regard to many of the waving parameters chosen. However, significant differences refer only to a limited number of parameters. The biological context of female waving was gathered from films and field observations. High intensity waving is released by conspecifics approaching from far (wanderers without burrows) and from the neighbourhood. Typically, only females and small males elicit high intensity display in a resident female. Waving normally stops in presence of larger males, especially of the male living in a resident breeding unit with the female in question. In spite of this, a pure agonistic (defensive) character of female waving is unlikely. Advertising of breeding condition seems to play a role similar to that in males. The few displaying females that exist in a given colony (about 2.5% in U. polita) show signs of special sexual excitement: brightening of carapace colours and sometimes spontaneous performance of waving, i.e. display immediately after emergence from the burrow in absence of any conspecific.  相似文献

Sp1, Sp3 (SPR-2) and Sp4 (SPR-1) are human sequence-specific DNA binding proteins with very similar structural features. In this report, we have analyzed Sp3 in direct comparison with Sp1. We have raised antibodies against both Sp1 and Sp3, and show that Sp3 protein, like Sp1, is expressed in various cell lines. Co-transfection experiments in different mammalian cell lines reveal that in contrast to Sp1 and Sp4, Sp3 is not able to activate several Sp1 responsive promoters. In addition, Sp3 also fails to activate reporter constructs in Drosophila SL2 cells lacking endogenous Sp factors. Instead, we find that Sp3 represses Sp1-mediated activation in a linear dose-dependent manner. A mutant of Sp3 lacking the DNA binding domain does not affect activation by Sp1, suggesting that the inhibition is most likely due to the competition with Sp1 for their common binding sites. To determine if any structurally similar domain of Sp3 is able to replace partially homologous domains of Sp1, we have generated chimeric proteins and tested their activation characteristics in gene transfer experiments. It appears that neither the glutamine-rich domains A and B nor the D domain of Sp1 can be replaced by the homologous regions of Sp3. Our results suggest that Sp3 is an inhibitory member of the Sp family.  相似文献

The nutrient and phytoplankton distributions in the North East Water polynya (NEW) were determined in June 1991. At Norske Øer Ice Barrier (the polynya's southern boundary), water was upwelled, but vertical instability precluded the development of phytoplankton blooms. Along the length of the northward coastal current, part of the anticyclonic circulation in this area, the vertical stability increased to the north by the input of melt water and solar heating. This caused a gradual increase in phytoplankton biomass and a decrease in nutrient concentrations until, in the northernmost area, nitrate was depleted at the surface, and sub-surface maxima of chlorophyll a were observed. The band of high chlorophyll a concentrations extending from this area to the south along the eastern margin of the polynya was interpreted as the presence of phytoplankton advected by the local circulation. The phytoplankton communities, consisting mainly of flagellates and diatoms, were typical for the beginning of phytoplankton development in ice-covered areas. They seemed to be partially released from melting ice. Three communities were distinguished, which represented, firstly, the upwelled water and its northern extension, secondly, an area of high phytoplankton biomass in the northwestern part of the polynya, and thirdly, the pack-ice region. The major taxa co-occurred at all stations, with only their relative importance changed. The nutrient concentrations in the NEW were different from those in the adjacent areas. The low nitrate values of about 4 M in the upper 70 m, found to be representative for the beginning of the growth season, imposed limitations on the overall phytoplankton production. Therefore, fertilization mechanisms such as upwelling along the Norske Øer Ice Barrier are important for local nutrient replenishment during the period of active phytoplankton growth. Eventually, silicate and phosphate supplied in higher concentrations by jets of the Arctic outflow may also support phytoplankton production, although these nutrients were not limiting during this study. The high-nutrient jets were detected in the upper 100 m of the water column at the eastern boundary of the polynya.  相似文献

We investigated the protection from photoinhibition by different developmental stages of Haematococcus lacustris [Girod] Rostafinski using chlorophyll fluorescence measurements of single cells and suspensions. An overall correlation between higher cellular content of secondary carotenoids and the capacity to withstand excessive irradiation was observed in flagellated cells and aplanospores of H. lacustris. Low-light-reversible spreading of extra-chloroplastic secondary carotenoids occurred in the periphery of the cell during strong irradiation. This process resulted in increased shading of the cup-shaped chloroplast as demonstrated by a decrease in chlorophyll fluorescence. Extrachloroplastic accumulation of secondary carotenoids in H. lacustris can be interpreted as a specific adaptation to habitats that exhibit strong insolation.  相似文献

The enzymatic activity of recombinant influenza virus RNA polymerase is strictly dependent on the addition of a template RNA containing 5' and 3' viral sequences. Here we report the analysis of the binding specificity and physical characterization of the complex by using gel shift, modification interference, and density gradient techniques. The 13S complex binds specifically to short synthetic RNAs that mimic the partially double stranded panhandle structures found at the termini of both viral RNA and cRNA. The polymerase will also bind independently to the single-stranded 5' or 3' ends of viral RNA. It binds most strongly to specific sequences within the 5' end but is unable to bind these sequences in the context of a completely double stranded structure. Modification interference analysis identified the short sequence motifs at the 5' ends of the viral RNA and cRNA templates that are critical for binding.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton collected during five summer expeditions to the Arctic Ocean between 1987 and 1991 was analysed for regional patterns in biomass and species distribution, distinguishing between an epipelagic (0–100 m) and a deeper (0–500 m) layer. A total of 58 stations was sampled mainly in the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov Basins of the central Arctic Ocean and in areas of the Greenland Sea, West Spitsbergen Current and Barents Sea. Results from the different expeditions were combined to create a transect extending from the Fram Strait across the Eurasian Basin into the Makarov Basin. Mesozooplankton dry mass in the upper 500 m decreased from 8.4 g m−2 in the West Spitsbergen Current to less than 2 g m−2 in the high-Arctic deep-sea basins. In the central Arctic Ocean, biomass was concentrated in the upper 100 m and was dominated by the large copepods Calanus hyperboreus and C. glacialis. In contrast, the mesozooplankton in the West Spitsbergen Current was more evenly distributed throughout the upper 500 m, with C. finmarchicus as the prevailing species. The distribution of abundant mesopelagic species reflected the hydrographic regime: the calanoid copepod Gaetanus tenuispinus and the hyperiid amphipod Themisto abyssorum were most abundant in the Atlantic inflow, while Scaphocalanus magnus was a typical component of the high-Arctic fauna. The relatively high mesozooplankton biomass and the occurrence of boreal-Atlantic species in the central Arctic Ocean are indicators for the import of organic material from allochthonous sources, especially from the northern North Atlantic. Hence, in spite of its enclosure by land masses, the Arctic Ocean is characterized by an exchange of water masses and organisms with the North Atlantic, and advection processes strongly influence the distribution of plankton species in this high-latitude ecosystem. Collagen is an essential part of the cardiac interstitium. Collagen subtypes, their location, total amount and the architecture of the fibrillar network are of functional importance. Architecture in terms of density of the fibrillar network is assumed to be reflected by the intensity of immunohistochemical staining of collagen. The aim of this study was to evaluate a video-based microdensitometric method for quantifying density expressed as absorbance of collagen subtypes I and III stained with an indirect immunoperoxidase method in myectomy specimens of patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Various factors influencing the immunohistochemical staining product and the technical properties of the image analysis system were investigated. Linearity between collagen concentration and the absorbance of the immunohistochemical staining product was demonstrated for collagen I using a dot-blot technique. Immunohistochemical collagen staining and density measure ment were easily reproducible. The cardiac disability of the patients was assessed according to the New York Heart Association (NYHA) criteria. There was a significant increase in collagen type I density with higher NYHA class, whereas no significant association was found for total collagen area fraction. Thus, video-based microdensitometry gives further insight into the structural remodelling of myocardial collagens and reveals their significance in the process of heart failure in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  相似文献

This report describes a simple method for the bioremediation of selenium from agricultural drainage water. A medium-packed pilot-scale biological reactor system, inoculated with the selenate-respiring bacterium Thauera selenatis, was constructed at the Panoche Water District, San Joaquin Valley, Calif. The reactor was used to treat drainage water (7.6 liters/min) containing both selenium and nitrate. Acetate (5 mM) was the carbon source-electron donor reactor feed. Selenium oxyanion concentrations (selenate plus selenite) in the drainage water were reduced by 98%, to an average of 12 (plusmn) 9 (mu)g/liter. Frequently (47% of the sampling days), reactor effluent concentrations of less than 5 (mu)g/liter were achieved. Denitrification was also observed in this system; nitrate and nitrite concentrations in the drainage water were reduced to 0.1 and 0.01 mM, respectively (98% reduction). Analysis of the reactor effluent showed that 91 to 96% of the total selenium recovered was elemental selenium; 97.9% of this elemental selenium could be removed with Nalmet 8072, a new, commercially available precipitant-coagulant. Widespread use of this system (in the Grasslands Water District) could reduce the amount of selenium deposited in the San Joaquin River from 7,000 to 140 lb (ca. 3,000 to 60 kg)/year.  相似文献

The tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus, exhibits a female-limited polymorphism for Batesian mimicry; the Canadian tiger swallowtail, Papilio canadensis, lacks the mimetic (dark) form entirely. The species hybridize to a limited extent where their ranges overlap. Field collections and censuses indicate that mimetic females occur throughout the range of P. glaucus but at lowest frequencies in populations at the latitudinal edges of its geographic range such as the southernmost part of Florida and along the entire northern edge of its distribution from Massachusetts to Minnesota. Frequencies of mimetic females have remained relatively stable over time. Inheritance of the mimetic form is controlled primarily by two interacting sex-linked loci. The typical matrilineal pattern of inheritance in P. glaucus can be explained by polymorphism at a Y-linked locus, b. Analysis of P. glaucus × P. canadensis crosses has also revealed an X-linked locus, s, which controls the expression of the mimetic phenotype. The P. canadensis allele, scan, suppresses the mimetic phenotype in hybrid and backcross females. Results from more than 12 yr of rearing tiger swallowtails, including interspecies hybrids, indicate that the absence of mimetic P. canadensis females is due to both a high frequency of the “suppressing” allele scan and low frequency of the black-pigment-determining b + allele. The frequency of scan (or other suppressing alleles of s) in P. glaucus populations outside the hybrid zone is low. Some males heterozygous at the s locus and some suppressed mimetic females occur within the hybrid zone. A simple genetic model predicts the frequency of daughters that differ in phenotype from their mothers.  相似文献
