Berkowski, B & Klug, C. 2011: Lucky rugose corals on crinoid stems: unusual examples of subepidermal epizoans from the Devonian of Morocco. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 24–33. In the fossil record, evidence for true epizoans, i.e. living animals inhabiting other living host‐animals, is rather rare. A host reaction is usually needed to proof the syn vivo‐settling of the epizoan. Herein, we provide a first report of such an epizoan biocoenosis from various strata of the Early Devonian of Hamar Laghdad, the world‐renowned Moroccan mud‐mound locality. In this case, solitary rugose corals settled as larvae on crinoid stems, perhaps at a spot where the epidermis was missing for some reason (injury, disease). Both the crinoid and the coral began to grow around each other. By doing so, the affected crinoid columnals formed a swelling, where ultimately only an opening slightly larger than the coral orifice remained. We discuss both macroecological and small‐scale synecological aspects of this biocoenosis. The coral profited from its elevated home because it reached into more rapid currents providing the polyp with more food than at the densely populated seafloor, which was probably covered by a coral‐meadow around the mounds and hydrothermal vents. □Corals, crinoids, Early Devonian, epizoans, Morocco, Rugosa.  相似文献

The 25 kDa mRNA cap binding protein can be purified in a partially phosphorylated state and the extent of its phosphorylation appears to be regulated during heat shock and mitosis in mammalian cells. We demonstrated that a nonabundant serine protein kinase activity exists in rabbit reticulocytes that phosphorylates the 25 kDa cap binding protein in both the free (eIF-4E) and complexed (eIF-4F) state. This kinase was not inhibited by the cAMP-dependent protein kinase inhibitory peptide IAAGRTGRRNAIHDILVAA, did not phosphorylate S6 ribosomal protein, did not phosphorylate p220 of eIF-4F as protein kinase C does and no other substrates for this kinase were apparent in reticulocyte ribosomal salt wash. The molecular identity of this kinase, the specific site(s) of eIF-4E that it phosphorylates and its in vivo regulatory role remain to be studied.  相似文献

Recent reviews indicate that N deposition increases soil organic matter (SOM) storage in forests but the undelying processes are poorly understood. Our aim was to quantify the impacts of increased N inputs on soil C fluxes such as C mineralization and leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from different litter materials and native SOM. We added 5.5 g N m?2 yr?1 as NH4NO3 over 1 year to two beech forest stands on calcareous soils in the Swiss Jura. We replaced the native litter layer with 13C‐depleted twigs and leaves (δ13C: ?38.4 and ?40.8‰) in late fall and measured N effects on litter‐ and SOM‐derived C fluxes. Nitrogen addition did not significantly affect annual C losses through mineralization, but altered the temporal dynamics in litter mineralization: increased N inputs stimulated initial mineralization during winter (leaves: +25%; twigs: +22%), but suppressed rates in the subsequent summer. The switch from a positive to a negative response occurred earlier and more strongly for leaves than for twigs (?21% vs. 0%). Nitrogen addition did not influence microbial respiration from the nonlabeled calcareous mineral soil below the litter which contrasts with recent meta‐analysis primarily based on acidic soils. Leaching of DOC from the litter layer was not affected by NH4NO3 additions, but DOC fluxes from the mineral soils at 5 and 10 cm depth were significantly reduced by 17%. The 13C tracking indicated that litter‐derived C contributed less than 15% of the DOC flux from the mineral soil, with N additions not affecting this fraction. Hence, the suppressed DOC fluxes from the mineral soil at higher N inputs can be attributed to reduced mobilization of nonlitter derived ‘older’ DOC. We relate this decline to an altered solute chemistry by NH4NO3 additions, an increased ionic strength and acidification resulting from nitrification, rather than to a change in microbial decomposition.  相似文献

Rotation spectra of mouse oocytes, zygotes and embryos in the two-cell stage under the influence of high-frequency rotating fields were studied. The characteristic frequency (fc1) of cells isolated from superovulated + mated mice is different from that of oocytes. This was attributed to an increase in the membrane resistance and, less probably, to a change in the zona pellucida conductivity. The rotation spectra can be used to differentiate between non-fertilized and fertilized eggs. A theoretical interpretation of the measured spectra and simulation of the changes caused by fertilization is given.  相似文献

Because leucokinins stimulate diuresis in some insects, we wished to identify the neurosecretory cells in Manduca sexta that might be a source of leucokinin-like neurohormones. Immunostaining was done at various stages of development, using an antiserum to leucokinin IV. Bilateral pairs of neurosecretory cells in abdominal ganglia 3–7 of larvae and adults are immunoreactive; these cells project via the ipsilateral ventral nerves to the neurohemal transverse nerves. The immunoreactivity and size of these lateral cells greatly increases in the pharate adult, and this change appears to be related to a period of intensive diuresis occurring a few days before adult eclosion. Relationships of these neurons to cells that are immunoreactive to a M. sexta diuretic hormone were also investigated. Diuretic hormone and leucokinin immunoreactivity are co-localized in the lateral neurosecretory cells and their neurohemal projections. A median pair of leucokinin-immunoreactive, and a lateral pair of diuretic hormone-immunoreactive neurons in the larval terminal abdominal ganglion project to neurohemal release sites within the cryptonephridium. The immunoreactivity of these cells is lost as the cryptonephridium is eliminated during metamorphosis. This loss appears to be related to the change from the larval to adult pattern of diuresis.  相似文献

Snow overlays the majority of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). However, there is very little information available on the microbiological assemblages that are associated with this vast and climate‐sensitive landscape. In this study, the structure and diversity of snow microbial assemblages from two regions of the western GrIS ice margin were investigated through the sequencing of small subunit ribosomal RNA genes. The origins of the microbiota were investigated by examining correlations to molecular data obtained from marine, soil, freshwater and atmospheric environments and geochemical analytes measured in the snow. Snow was found to contain a diverse assemblage of bacteria (Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria) and eukarya (Alveolata, Fungi, Stramenopiles and Chloroplastida). Phylotypes related to archaeal Thaumarchaeota and Euryarchaeota phyla were also identified. The snow microbial assemblages were more similar to communities characterized in soil than to those documented in marine ecosystems. Despite this, the chemical composition of snow samples was consistent with a marine contribution, and strong correlations existed between bacterial beta diversity and the concentration of Na+ and Cl?. These results suggest that surface snow from western regions of Greenland contains exogenous microbiota that were likely aerosolized from more distant soil sources, transported in the atmosphere and co‐precipitated with the snow.  相似文献

Adult females of the mosquito Aedes aegypti showed two cycles of DNA replication in the fat body based on microspectrophotometric measurement of changes in nuclear DNA. The first cycle began after emergence and resulted in 80% of diploid fat body cells becoming tetraploid and 20% becoming octoploid by the end of the third day. The second replication cycle occurred 48–72 h after a blood meal and resulted in an increase in octoploid nuclei to 67% Topical application of juvenile hormone or methoprene to abdomens isolated at emergence stimulated an increase in ploidy levels above that normally seen in situ. Synthesis of DNA, estimated by incorporation of injected [3H]-thymidine, rose after emergence and remained high for 2 days. Synthesis increased again after a blood meal, reached a peak by 6 h, and returned to low levels by 24 h after the meal. The timing of DNA synthesis and a measurable increase in ploidy were temporally separated. The ploidy increase, but not DNA synthesis, was correlated with increases in juvenile hormone levels.  相似文献

Tentoxin, produced by Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. causes severe variegated chlorosis in germinating seedlings of certain dicotyledonous species. However, it does not impair radicle and hypocotyl elongation or cotyledon expansion. Effects of the toxin on the activity of selected enzymes from both chloroplasts and cytoplasm were determined. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), which is highly sensitive to tentoxin and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.), which is resistant, were used as test plants. The activities of chloroplastic, but not cytoplasmic, enzymes were decreased by treatment of cucumber cotyledons with tentoxin. Neither group of enzymes was affected by the toxin in cabbage cotyledons. The decreased enzymic activities are probably related to reported inhibition of photophosphorylation by tentoxin.  相似文献

Biodiversity data is being digitized and made available online at a rapidly increasing rate but current practices typically do not preserve linkages between these data, which impedes interoperation, provenance tracking, and assembly of larger datasets. For data associated with biocollections, the biodiversity community has long recognized that an essential part of establishing and preserving linkages is to apply globally unique identifiers at the point when data are generated in the field and to persist these identifiers downstream, but this is seldom implemented in practice. There has neither been coalescence towards one single identifier solution (as in some other domains), nor even a set of recommended best practices and standards to support multiple identifier schemes sharing consistent responses. In order to further progress towards a broader community consensus, a group of biocollections and informatics experts assembled in Stockholm in October 2014 to discuss community next steps to overcome current roadblocks. The workshop participants divided into four groups focusing on: identifier practice in current field biocollections; identifier application for legacy biocollections; identifiers as applied to biodiversity data records as they are published and made available in semantically marked-up publications; and cross-cutting identifier solutions that bridge across these domains. The main outcome was consensus on key issues, including recognition of differences between legacy and new biocollections processes, the need for identifier metadata profiles that can report information on identifier persistence missions, and the unambiguous indication of the type of object associated with the identifier. Current identifier characteristics are also summarized, and an overview of available schemes and practices is provided.  相似文献

Ecdysteroid titre in the haemolymph of the housefly, Musca domestica, cycled during oögenesis and peaked at ~50 pg/μl during stages 5, 6 and 7. Levels of 10–20 pg/μl were found in houseflies with pre- and post-vitellogenic ovaries. Removal of the corpus allatum and corpus cardiacum complex resulted in low ecdysteroid levels (10 pg/μl). Ovariectomized flies also had lower ecdysteroid levels than the controls at 2 days (5 pg/μl) after emergence but not at 6 days (22 pg/μl). It is possible that the ecdysteroid peak that occurred during stages 5, 6 and 7 was produced by the ovaries because ovaries secreted and synthesized ecdysteroid in vitro. Endogenous haemolymph ecdysteroid levels had a linear correlation with the amount of vitellogenin that held for hormone concentrations of 5–43 pg/μl. Furthermore, the injection of 20-hydroxyecdysone at doses of 10 ng?1.0 μg/fly increased the amount of vitellogenin from 6 h to 12 h after injection; by 24 h, the vitellogenin returned to control levels. When 20-hydroxyecdysone was injected into ovariectomized flies, it was rapidly degraded and 96% was cleared from the haemolymph within 1 h.  相似文献
