Teliospores are the most important diaspores of smut fungi, albeit not the only ones. The role of basidla, basidiospores, secondary spores, yeast cells, and infected parts of the host for dispersal has often been neglected. Many smut species have soral structures like galls, peridia, and elaters, which cause teliospores to be liberated over prolonged periods. This increases the chance that at least some spores are released under favourable wet climatic conditions and while host plants are susceptible. In this review, the diversity of dispersal units as well as vectors of smut fungi are presented. The importance of timing of diaspore liberation, flexibility in dispersal strategies, and the genetic and evolutionary implications of dispersal strategies of smut fungi are discussed. The general considerations are complemented by examples based on original field and laboratory observations: peridia of Farysia corniculata and certain species of Sporisorium expose the spore mass by hygroscopic movement under wet conditions (hygrochasy) favourable for teliospore germination and infection of a host plant. Basidia with firmly attached basidiospores liberated from spore balls of Doassansiopsis deformans, branched basidiospores of Rhamphospora nymphaeae, needle-shaped basidiospores of species of Entyloma, folded basidiospores of Mycosyrinx cissi, and stellate groups of yeast cells of Trichocintractia utriculicola show enlarged surfaces, which are advantageous for dispersal in water. Galls filled with spore balls of Doassansiopsis limnocharidis and witches' brooms formed by spikelets infected by Cintractia standleyana separate from the host and fall into water where they are dispersed.  相似文献

The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of cultures from 11-day-old chick embryo muscle cells was studied for up to 4 weeks in vitro. AChE activity was found in mononucleated cells and multinucleated myotubes. The activity increased greatly after fusion. Maximum AChE levels were reached after 7–10 days of incubation and tended to decline thereafter. Multiple forms of AChE found in embryo muscle in situ were present in cultures before and after fusion. Selective inhibitors and substrates were used to show that AChE was released by the cells into their medium. Within a 2-day period the AChE that accumulated in the medium averaged over 6 times that remaining in the cells. Release of AChE from the cells was inhibited by cycloheximide, and AChE levels in cells and medium were much reduced when differentiation was inhibited by bromodeoxyuridine. Little AChE was present in subcultures of fibroblasts from muscle cultures. Acetyl-β-methylcholine and, to a lesser degree, choline itself, prevented the decrease in AChE levels of 2- to 3-week-old muscle cultures.  相似文献

Gleichsinnig verlaufen das Waschstum und die Differenzierung der Dictyosomen und der Kernhülle, die untereinander und mit dem ER in engstem Kontakt stehen. Das maximal entwickelte ER verbindet alle Zellorganelle miteinander. Die Mitochondrien sind dabei von porösen ER-Zisternen eng umschlossen.

Summary During sporogenesis the ER changes typically. It is increased by 50–100 times compared by the vegetative hyphae and is reduced again within a few hours while the zoospores become fully developed. In the same way growth and differentiation of the dictyosomes and the nuclear envelope takes place which are in contact with one another and with the ER. The ER, when developed maximally, connects all organells of the cell. The mitochondria then are tightly enclosed by porous ER-cisterns.

TB-T medium provides a high degree of selectivity for and detection of Pseudomonas cepacia biotypes upon initial plating from soil. TB-T medium consists of a basal medium with glucose as the sole carbon source and asparagine as the sole nitrogen source. The selectivity of TB-T medium is based on the combination of trypan blue (TB) and tetracycline (T) (pH 5.5). On TB-T medium, 216 of 300 isolates (72%) from five different soil types were identified as P. cepacia. The remaining 28% were facultative organisms that could be separated readily from P. cepacia by anaerobic glucose fermentation and by their inability to grow at 41 degrees C. Molds were controlled on low soil dilutions by adding crystal violet, nystatin, or both. Elimination of either ingredient or elevation of the pH to 7.5 resulted in a pronounced loss of selectivity. The efficiency of recovery varied considerably among P. cepacia strains but was high enough for some strains (76 to 86%) to permit quantitative studies. TB-T medium combines a defined formulation with high selectivity and allows recovery of P. cepacia biotypes from low soil dilutions (10(1) to 10(3)).  相似文献

By mimicking tropical rainy season conditions in aquaria, we stimulated two species of gymnotoid electric fish, Eigenmannia virescens and Apteronotus leptorhynchus, to spawn in captivity. Their courtship activity, breeding behaviour and electric social communication were monitored in several groups over 2 years. Groups of both species established dominance hierarchies correlated with electric organ discharge frequency, aggressiveness and size. Spawning was preceded by several nights of courtship during which the male modulated its electric organ discharge to produce ‘chirps’. Continual bouts of chirping lasted for hours on evenings prior to spawning. These electrical signals play a significant role in courtship and spawning, as gravid E. virescens females could be stimulated to spawn by playing back into the tank a tape recording of male courtship chirps. In both species the chirp invovves a slight increase in frequency followed by a cessation of the dominant frequency. This suggests a common mode of signal production in these two different genera of fish. Chirps are short and abrupt during aggressive encounters, but assume a softer and more raspy quality during courtship.  相似文献

New media (S1 and S2) were formulated that provide a high degree of selectivity and detection of fluorescent pseudomonads on initial plating. The selectivity of the S-type media was based on a detergent, sodium lauroyl sarcosine, and an antibiotic, trimethoprim. A total of five soils from different geographical locations and one sewage sludge sample were examined. On S1 medium, isolates from two soils with low fluorescent pseudomonad populations exhibited a high frequency of arginine dihydrolase (78%) and oxidase-positive (95%) phenotypes, but no fermentative isolates were recovered. Medium S2 was more defined and selective than S1, but lower numbers of fluorescent pseudomonads were recovered on S2. In soils in which fluorescent pseudomonads represent a small proportion of the total population, S1 medium consistently recovered high percentages of fluorescent phenotypes (82.5%).  相似文献

Summary Hypopomus occidentalis is a weakly electric Gymnotiform fish with a pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD).Hypopomus used in this study were taken from one of the northernmost boundaries of this species, the Atlantic drainage of Panama where the animals breed at the beginning of the dry season (December). In normal breeding populations,Hypopomus occidentalis exhibit a sexual dimorphism in EOD and morphology. Mature males are large with a broad tail and have an EOD characterized by a low peak power frequency. Females and immature males are smaller, having a slender tail and EODs with higher peak power frequencies (Fig. 1). This study describes differences in the EOD and electric organ morphology between breeding field populations of male and femaleHypopomus. Changes in physiology, morphology and EOD shape which may accompany this seasonal change were examined in steroid injected fish, using standard histological and physiological techniques.A group of females were injected with hormones (5-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estrogen or saline) to assess changes in their morphology and EOD. Animals treated with DHT developed characteristics which mimicked the sexually dimorphic characteristics of a male, while the other groups did not (see Fig. 5). Tissue from the tails of breeding males and females, and females treated with DHT, were sampled to measure the size of the electrocytes in the tail. The broader tail of males and DHT-females is composed of large electrocytes, whereas the slender tail of normal females is composed of smaller electrocytes. Therefore, the increase in the tail width in the female DHT group is caused by an enlargement of the electrocytes in this area.Intracellular recordings from the electrocytes of saline and DHT injected females show a difference in the responses of the rostral faces of the electrocytes from the two groups, which reflect the differences in their EODs. Saline-treated animals had symmetrical EODs (the first and second phase of the EOD were equal in duration and amplitude), while the physiological responses from each face of the electrocytes yielded responses that were similarly equal in duration and amplitude. DHT-treated animals had asymmetrical EODs (the first phase of the EOD was similar to that of saline treated fish and larger in amplitude and shorter in duration than the second phase) and the physiological responses of the electrocytes reflected this asymmetry. The differential recordings across the caudal face were similar to those from saline treated fish, while the responses from the rostral face were longer in duration and smaller in amplitude.These data suggest that the effects of androgens underlie the changes in single electrocytes which produce the sexually dimorphic signals and morphology present in natural breeding populations ofHypopomus occidentalis.  相似文献

Experimental time series for trajectories of motile cells may contain so much information that a systematic analysis will yield cell-type-specific motility models. Here we demonstrate how, using human keratinocytes and fibroblasts as examples. The two resulting models reflect the cells' different roles in the organism, it seems, and show that a cell has a memory of past velocities. They also suggest how to distinguish quantitatively between various surfaces' compatibility with the two cell types.  相似文献
