Selenium content of milk and milk products of Turkey. II

Selenium content of 1028 milk and milk products of Turkey are presented in this study. The selenium content of human milk (colostrum, transitional, and mature milk), various kinds of milk [cow, sheep, goat, buffalo, paper boxes (3%, 1.5%, 0.012% fat), bottled milk, condensed milk (10% fat), mineral added milk (1.6%), and banana, strawberry, and chocolate milk] and milk products (kefir, yogurt, Ayran, various cheese, coffee cream, ice cream, butter, margarine, milk powder, and fruit yogurt) in Turkey were determined by a spectrofluorometric method. The selenium levels of cow milks collected from 57 cities in Turkey were also determined. Selenium levels in cow milk varied with geographical location in Turkey and were found to be lowest for Van and highest for Aksaray. The results [milk (cow, sheep, goat, buffalo and human) and milks products] were compared with literature data from different countries.     

Analysis of peripheral blood lymphocyte phenotypes and Th1/Th2 cytokines profile in the systemic immune responses of Helicobacter pylori infected individuals

H. pylori elicits specific humoral and cellular immune responses in the mucosal immune system. However, the type and extent of T lymphocyte response in the systemic immune system is not clear for H. pylori positive patients. In this study, peripheral blood T lymphocyte phenotypes and serum Th1/Th2 based cytokines of 32 H. pylori positive patients were analyzed and compared to those of healthy controls. While αβ TCR⁺ lymphocytes and their phenotype analysis were not significantly different to those of healthy controls, the percentage of pan γδ TCR⁺ lymphocytes was up to 2.4 times greater in the H. pylori positive group then in healthy controls. Furthermore, significant increases in IL‐10 concentrations in serum samples of H. pylori patients indicated that their immune systems had switched toward a Th2 type immune response. The correlation between phenotype and type of T cell response in the peripheral blood during H. pylori infection is discussed.     

Structural, electronic, and elastic properties of K-As compounds: a first principles study

First-principle calculations are performed to investigate the structural, elastic and electronic properties of K-As compounds (KAs in NaP, LiAs and AuCu-type structures, KAs(2) in MgCu(2)-type structure, K(3)As in Na(3)As, Cu(3)P and Li(3)Bi-type structures, and K(5)As(4) in A(5)B(4)-type structure). The lattice parameters, cohesive energy, formation energy, bulk modulus, and the first derivative of bulk modulus (to fit to the Murnaghan's equation of state) of the considered structures are calculated and reasonable agreement is obtained, and the phase transition pressure is also predicted. The repeated calculations on the electronic band structures and the related partial density of states are also given. The calculated second-order elastic constants based on the stress-strain method and the other related quantities such as Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, sound velocities, Debye temperature, and shear anisotropy factors for considered structures are presented, and trends are discussed.

Isolation and Characterization of a Bacteriocin-Like Substance Produced by <Emphasis Type="Italic">Geobacillus toebii</Emphasis> Strain HBB-247

A total of 201 thermophilic bacteria isolated from various thermal spring, mud and soil were tested for their antibacterial activity. Among the mostly active isolates, Geobacillus toebii HBB-247 was further examined. Bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance (BLIS) produced by strain HBB-247 was found to be stable up to 60°C, sensitive to proteolytic enzymes and effective against Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria sp., E. avium, Clostridium pasteurianum, Cellulomonas fimi and some thermophilic strains isolated and identified in this study. As a result of Tricine-SDS-PAGE molecular weight of BLIS was estimated about 38 kDa. Production studies showed that G. toebii HBB-247 starts to produce antibacterial substance at early logarithmic phase of growth and maximum production was detected at the end of the logarithmic phase.
