The genetic structure and diversity of species is determined by both current population dynamics and historical processes. Population genetic structure at the edge of the distribution is often expected to differ substantially from populations at the centre, as these edge populations are often small and fragmented. In addition, populations located in regions that have experienced repeated glaciations throughout the Pleistocene, may still carry imprints from the genetic consequences of frequent distribution shifts. Using chloroplast DNA sequences and nuclear microsatellite markers we studied the genetic structure of Epipactis atrorubens at the northern edge of its distribution. Contrary to populations in the centre of the distribution, populations at the northern range are regionally endangered as they are small and disjunct. Sequence data of 2 chloroplast loci and allelic data from 6 nuclear microsatellite markers were obtained from 297 samples from Finland, Estonia and Russia. We sought for genetic indicators of past population processes, such as post-glacial colonisation history of E. atrorubens. As expected, we observed low genetic variation, in terms of numbers of substitutions, haplotypes and alleles, and significant levels of differentiation, especially pronounced in the chloroplast DNA. These features suggest that the edge populations could be prone to extinction.  相似文献

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition between a chiral nitrone and N-substituted maleimides afforded unprecedented enantiopure spiro-fused heterocycles in good yields with a high enantio- and diastereoselectivity. The reaction was taking place on the less hindered face of the nitrone. The obtaining heterocycles were screened for their in vitro antioxidant properties and the results revealed that the potent antioxidant activity was generally recorded to compounds (3g) and (3e). The in vitro antibacterial activities of these two compounds were also investigated and the results demonstrated the strongest potential of compound (3g) against all the tested bacteria. Molecular properties were analyzed and showed good oral drug candidate like properties and that could be exploited as a potential antioxidant and antimicrobial agent. Finally, the preliminary results obtained from this investigation attempted to clarify if the structurally different side chains of active compounds interfere with their biological properties.  相似文献

A new series of fluorinated and non-fluorinated 2-phenylbenzimidazoles bearing oxygenated substituents on the phenyl ring has been synthesized. Synthesis of the new series was based on our previous discovery of 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-5-fluorobenzothiazole (PMX 610) as a potent and selective antitumour agent in vitro (sub-nanomolar GI(50) in sensitive human cancer cell lines), but with poor aqueous solubility and lack of a definitive cellular target limiting further development. In this study we test the hypothesis that 2-phenylbenzimidazoles with similar substitution patterns to PMX 610 would retain potent antitumour activity but with potentially superior pharmaceutical properties. In general the new compounds were less active than the former benzothiazole series in vitro when tested against the breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA 468; however the two most active compounds in the present series (3j and 3k) exhibit low micromolar GI(50) values in both cell lines and provide the opportunity for further chemical derivatization with a view to target identification.  相似文献

Although coevolution is acknowledged to occur in nature, coevolutionary patterns in symbioses not involving species-to-species relationships are poorly understood. Mycorrhizal plants are thought to be too generalist to coevolve with their symbiotic fungi; yet some plants, including some orchids, exhibit strikingly narrow mycorrhizal specificity. Here, we assess the evolutionary history of mycorrhizal specificity in the lady's slipper orchid genus, Cypripedium. We sampled 90 populations of 15 taxa across three continents, using DNA methods to identify fungal symbionts and quantify mycorrhizal specificity. We assessed phylogenetic relationships among sampled Cypripedium taxa, onto which we mapped mycorrhizal specificity. Cypripedium taxa associated almost exclusively with fungi within family Tulasnellaceae. Ancestral specificity appears to have been narrow, followed by a broadening after the divergence of C. debile. Specificity then narrowed, resulting in strikingly narrow specificity in most of the taxa in this study, with no taxon rewidening to the same extant as basal members of the genus. Sympatric taxa generally associated with different sets of fungi, and most clades of Cypripedium-mycorrhizal fungi were found throughout much of the northern hemisphere, suggesting that these evolutionary patterns in specificity are not the result of biogeographic lack of opportunity to associate with potential partners. Mycorrhizal specificity in genus Cypripedium appears to be an evolvable trait, and associations with particular fungi are phylogenetically conserved.  相似文献

Global warming is enabling many plant species to expand their range to higher latitudes and altitudes, where they may suffer less from natural aboveground and belowground enemies. Reduced control by natural enemies can enable climate warming‐induced range expanders to gain an advantage in competition with natives and become disproportionally abundant in their new range. However, so far studies have only examined individual growth of range expanders, which have common congeneric plant species in their new range. Thus it is not known how general is this reduced effect of above‐ and belowground enemies and how it operates in communities, where multiple plant species also interact with each other. Here we show that range‐expanding plant species with and without congenerics in the invaded habitats differ in their ecological interactions in the new range. In a community‐level experiment, range‐expanding plant species, both with and without congenerics, suppressed the growth of a herbivore. However, only range expanders without congenerics reduced biomass production of the native plant species. In the present study, range expanders without congenerics allocated more biomass aboveground compared to native plant species, which can explain their competitive advantage. Competitive interaction and also biomass allocation of native plants and their congeneric range expanders were similar. Our results highlight that information about species phylogenetic relatedness with native flora can be crucial for improving predictions about the consequences of climate warming‐induced range expansions.  相似文献
