Objectives

It can be argued that with several players marketing a large number of brands, the pharmaceutical market in India is competitive. However, the pharmaceutical market should not be studied as a single market but, as a sum total of a large number of individual sub-markets. This paper examines the methodological issues with respect to defining the relevant market involved in studying concentration in the pharmaceutical market in India. Further, we have examined whether the Indian pharmaceutical market is competitive.

Methods

Indian pharmaceutical market was studied using PharmaTrac, the sales audit data from AIOCD-AWACS, that organises formulations into 5 levels of therapeutic classification based on the EphMRA system. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) was used as the indicator of market concentration. We calculated HHI for the entire pharmaceutical market studied as a single market as well as at the five different levels of therapeutic classification.

Results and Discussion

Whereas the entire pharmaceutical market taken together as a single market displayed low concentration (HHI = 226.63), it was observed that if each formulation is defined as an individual sub-market, about 69 percent of the total market in terms of market value displayed at least moderate concentration. Market should be defined taking into account the ease of substitutability. Since, patients cannot themselves substitute the formulation prescribed by the doctor with another formulation with the same indication and therapeutic effect, owing to information asymmetry, it is appropriate to study market concentration at the narrower levels of therapeutic classification.  相似文献

The emergence of multidrug resistant pathogens threatened the clinical efficacy of many existing antibiotics. This situation has been recognized globally as a serious concern and justifies further research to discover antimicrobial agents from natural origins including plant extracts. The aim of our work was to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of Scabiosa arenaria Forssk . extracts and pure compounds using a bioguided fractionation, and try to explain some traditional use of this genus. The best antimicrobial activity‐guided fractionation was obtained by BuOH fractions of flowers, fruits and (stems and leaves) against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values from 0.0195 to 5 mg/ml. Escherichia coli was the most affected bug, thus the MIC of fruits BuOH extract showed the best anti‐Escherichia coli activity (MIC = 0.0195 mg/ml), followed by the (stems and leaves) and flowers BuOH extracts; MIC = 0.078 and 0.15 mg/ml, respectively. Furthermore, the subfractions obtained from these three mixed fractions showed also an important antimicrobial activity against the three microorganisms, with MIC values between 0.0195 and 0.312 mg/ml. The fractionation of the aerial part BuOH fraction led to the isolation of oleanolic acid ( 1 ) and luteolin 7‐O‐glucopyranoside ( 2 ) which are reported here for the first time from Sarenaria. Both compounds showed good antimicrobial activities with MIC values ranging from 170 to 683 μm and 86 to 347 μm , respectively. These results support the use of the Scabiosa genus to inhibit the growth of tested pathogenic bacteria and yeasts which may reduce illnesses associated with their exposure.  相似文献

Because of its high contents of protein, α-linolenic-rich oil, lignans, and fiber, demand is increasing for flax(Linum usitatissi-mum L.) and flax seed oil as a food source. In this comparative survey, we examined germination and the mobilization of seed storage products (lipids and soluble proteins) of 3-d-old seedlings from two flax cultivars (N 51 and H 52) challenged with moderate salinity (up to 200 mM NaCl). At the highest salt concentration, germination appeared to be cultivar-dependent, with that of ‘N 51’ being less impaired and delayed than in ’H 52’. Sodium chloride inhibited germination via osmotic and toxic effects, so that seed viability was altered, especially in ‘H 52’. At 200 mM NaCl, lipid mobilization was delayed in the earliest germination phases. This response was associated with increased proportions of linolenic acid contents in both cultivars and more linolenic acid-rich molecular species of TAGs. Irrespective of the salt level, soluble protein contents in both cultivars decreased over time, although a salt-related precocity of protein degradation occurred at 200 mM NaCl.  相似文献

The oil content increases during the maturation of seeds (rise of 30%), but decreases at the end of seed maturation. Differences between SDS-PAGE total protein profiles were shown. Polyunsaturated fatty acids contents increase during middle-maturation. Contents of alpha and gamma tocopherols increase with time. This increase is explained by the fact that tocopherols participate actively in the protection of membranes whose phospholipids consist of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).  相似文献

The effects of Cd2+ and NaCl, applied together or separately, on growth and uptake of Cd2+ were determined for the halophyte Sesuvium portulacastrum L. Seedlings were cultivated in the presence of 50 or 100 μmol L−1 Cd2+ alone or combined with 100 or 400 mmol L−1 NaCl. Data showed that alone, Cd2+ induced chlorosis, necrosis, and inhibited growth. Addition of NaCl to Cd2+-containing medium restored growth and alleviated the toxicity, however. NaCl also enhanced the amounts of Cd2+ accumulated in the shoots. All Cd2+ treatment reduced K+ and Ca2+ uptake and transport to the shoots. Accumulation of Na+ in the shoots was not affected by Cd2+, however. Thus S. portulacastrum maintained its halophytic characteristics in the presence of Cd2+. We suggest this halophyte could be used for phytoextraction of Cd2+ from salt-contaminated sites.  相似文献

Effects of angiotensin II and captopril on rewarding properties of morphine   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effects of captopril and Ang II on morphine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) and morphine self-administration in male Wistar rat were investigated. In CPP experiment, injection of captopril before test significantly decreased the difference of the time spent in compartment A between pre- and post-conditioning compared to morphine group. In self- administration experiment number of active lever pressing was significantly greater than passive in morphine group. In captopril group number of active lever pressing was significantly lower than morphine group however, there was not significant difference between active and passive lever pressed number. The results showed that captopril significantly decreased morphine-induced conditional place preference and morphine self-administration but the effect of Ang II was not significant. It can be concluded that RAS may have a role in rewarding properties of morphine.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tract is a dynamic ecosystem containing a complex microbial community. In this paper, the indigenous intestinal bacteria and the microbial fermentation profile particularly short chain fatty acids (SCFA), lactate, and ammonia concentrations are reviewed. The intestinal bacterial composition changes with age. The bacterial density of the small intestine increases with age and comprises of lactobacilli, streptococci, enterobacteria, fusobacteria and eubacteria. Strict anaerobes (anaerobic gram-positive cocci, Eubacterium spp., Clostridium spp., Lactobacillus spp., Fusobacterium spp. and Bacteroides) are predominating caecal bacteria in young broilers. Data from culture-based studies showed that bifidobacteria could not be isolated from young birds, but were recovered from four-week-old broilers. Caecal lactobacilli accounted for 1.5-24% of the caecal bacteria. Gene sequencing of caecal DNA extracts showed that the majority of bacteria belonged to Clostridiaceae. Intestinal bacterial community is influenced by the dietary ingredients, nutrient levels and physical structure of feed. SCFA and other metabolic products are affected by diet formulation and age. Additional studies are required to know the bacterial metabolic activities together with the community analysis of the intestinal bacteria. Feed composition and processing have great potential to influence the activities of intestinal bacteria towards a desired direction in order to support animal health, well-being and microbial safety of broiler meat.  相似文献

A newly soil-isolated Staphylococcus aureus strain secretes a non-induced lipase in the culture medium. The extracellular lipase from S. aureus (SAL3) is purified to homogeneity. The purified enzyme is a tetrameric protein (180 kDa) corresponding to the association of four lipase molecules. The 15 N-terminal amino acid residues showed a high degree of homology with other staphylococcal lipase sequences. The part of the gene encoding the mature SAL3 is cloned and sequenced. The deduced polypeptide sequence, corresponding to the mature SAL3, was very similar to the mature Staphylococcus simulans lipase sequence with two additional amino acid residues (LK) at the N-terminus of SAL3. The lipase activity is maximal at pH 9.5 and 55 °C. The specific activity of about 4200 U/mg or 3500 U/mg was measured using tributyrin or olive oil emulsion as substrate, respectively, at pH 9.5 and 55 °C.In contrast to other staphylococcal lipases previously characterised, SAL3 is found to be stable between pH 5 and 12 after 24 h incubation. The enzyme retained 50% of its activity after 60 min incubation at 60 °C. This novel lipase is able to hydrolyse its substrate in presence of various oxidizing agents as well as some surfactants and some commercial detergents, then SAL3 can be considered as a good candidate for industrial and biotechnological applications.  相似文献
